Salt Taste Perception and Salt Intake in Adults With and Without Coronary Heart Disease: Interactions With Body Mass Index, Sex, and Salt Intake.

BACKGROUND: Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the leading cause of death in the United States. While management guidelines recommend reducing dietary sodium/salt intake, salt taste can enhance food flavor and quality of life, making adherence to dietary recommendations challenging. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we aimed to explore differences in salt taste perception between adults with CHD and those without CHD and whether these differences interact with sex and body mass index (BMI). METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis to assess the associations of CHD with sodium intake and salt ta

Myelin Dynamics at the Axon-Oligodendrocyte Interface: Adaptive Conduction Homeostasis in Demyelination, Remyelination and White Matter Repair.

In the past, myelination was perceived as a passive, multilayered structure that increased the velocity with which signals travel along an axon. However, evidence now indicates that this conceptualization does not reflect the dynamic processes occurring during the continuous maintenance of signal transmission. Therefore, our hypothesis in this paper is to view myelination as an interactive boundary between the oligodendrocytes enveloping an axon and the axon itself. These cells interact to coordinate several factors, including geometry, membrane structure, nanoscale barriers, cellular accessib

Differential regional textural attributes of tongue in normal and acidity patients in the light of traditional Chinese medicine.

INTRODUCTION: In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), tongue diagnosis plays an important role. Besides shape, colour and textural attributes of tongue regions have significance due to their association with different organs (viz. heart, lung, kidney-bladder, liver-gallbladder and stomach-spleen) in health and disease. Although numerous quantitative methods have been proposed to reduce inter and intra observer variability in tongue diagnosis, almost all of them considered only global colour/textural features i.e. from entire body of tongue. In this exploratory work, regional colour and texture

Development and independent validation of a hypoxemia risk prediction model (HAPPY-12K) for sedated gastrointestinal endoscopy: a multicentre prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Hypoxemia is a common and serious complication during sedated gastrointestinal endoscopy for out- and in-patients. Though diagnostic and severity scoring systems of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and difficult airway assessment (DAA) are widely used to assess hypoxemia risk, there is no exclusively designed prediction model and convenient tool in real-world practice. We aimed to develop and validate a robust and accurate hypoxemia risk prediction model for pre-operative use in this context. METHODS: Using data from out-patients undergoing gastrointestinal endoscopy between May 2020

Spatial proteomics reveals layer-specific molecular landscapes and keratin 17-mediated inflammatory crosstalk in oral lichen planus of the tongue.

BACKGROUND: Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic immune-mediated inflammatory disease that affects the oral mucosa, with tongue lesions being clinically significant due to their association with oral cancer risk and taste dysfunction. However, the layer-specific molecular heterogeneity of the basal layer (BL), spinous layer (SL) and lamina propria (LP) in tongue OLP remains poorly characterized, limiting mechanistic understanding and therapeutic development. METHODS: We used spatial proteomics combined with laser capture microdissection to analyse layer-specific protein expression in tongue

Melkersson-Rosenthal Syndrome (MRS): A Case Report.

Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome (MRS) is a rare granulomatous disorder classically characterized by recurrent orofacial edema, relapsing peripheral facial palsy, and fissured tongue. However, the complete triad is uncommon, and incomplete forms may create a diagnostic challenge. We report the case of a 48-year-old man with type 2 diabetes mellitus who was admitted with recurrent swelling of both lips and a fissured tongue. The symptoms had begun 15 days earlier with an episode of bilateral macrocheilitis initially attributed to a food allergy. The swelling temporarily improved with antihistamine

A cross-sectional protocol for experimental tongue high-density surface electromyography to detect and classify radiation-associated hypoglossal neuropathy.

BACKGROUND: Hypoglossal neuropathy is the most common lower cranial neuropathy detected as a delayed sequelae of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) -driven oropharyngeal cancer (OPC). Needle electromyography (EMG) is the gold standard for electrodiagnostic testing, but it is invasive and relies on subjective interpretation of the EMG signal. This study explores the potential of non-invasive high-density surface electromyography (HDSEMG) to detect and quantify hypoglossal neuropathy in OPC survivors. OBJECTIVE: In an exploratory study, examine the feasibility of HDSEMG for rapid, non-invasive screenin

Non-Pharmacological Treatments for Oral Carcinogenesis: From Oral Lichen Planus to Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic, immune-mediated inflammatory disorder of the oral mucosa recognized as an oral potentially malignant disorder, with a pooled malignant transformation rate of approximately 1-1.4% that is highest in atrophic-erosive and tongue lesions. Its most feared outcome, oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), remains associated with a 5-year survival below 50% and a substantial clinical, functional, and economic burden. Because conventional management, like topical corticosteroids for OLP and surgery with or without radiotherapy for OSCC, entails cumulative toxicity an

[Interpretation of connotations of formula and syndrome of Chaihu Guizhi Decoction based on modern pathophysiological mechanisms and its clinical application].

Chaihu Guizhi Decoction, originating from ZHANG Zhong-jing's Treatise on Febrile Diseases(Shang Han Lun), is a classic formula used to harmonize the Shaoyang and regulate nutrient-defense. It is primarily used to treat diseases involving both Taiyang and Shaoyang syndromes. The formula's indications are concisely summarized, yet rich in meaning, and reflect a profound connection with modern medical pathophysiological mechanisms. Key indications for Chaihu Guizhi Decoction are listed below. Diseases: it is used for rheumatoid arthritis, Sj9gren's syndrome, systemic lupus erythematosus(SLE), ank

Hypoglossal nerve palsy secondary to cervical spondylosis mimicking angio-oedema.

A man in his 50s, with a history of cervical spondylosis, presented with acute right-sided tongue swelling, dysarthria and dysphagia. Although tongue deviation was present, unilateral tongue oedema led to initial suspicion of angio-oedema and malignancy; however, blood tests and tongue MRI did not lead to a definitive diagnosis. Tranexamic acid was prescribed for presumed angio-oedema; however, at follow-up, rightward tongue deviation persisted without any other neurological deficits. Localised tenderness was noted over the right occipital area, corresponding to the atlanto-occipital joint. Im

Effect of denture and soft tissue disinfection on edentulous biofilms.

Oral biofilms play a central role in oral and systemic diseases. Periodontal pathogens such as Porphyromonas gingivalis and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans have been detected on dentures and oral mucosa, suggesting denture wearers remain at risk. This study aimed to evaluate whether combined denture and soft tissue disinfection reduces microbial biofilm more effectively than denture cleaning alone. Sixty-one complete-denture wearers were randomly assigned to a test group (n = 31; denture disinfection plus soft tissue chlorhexidine treatment) or a control group (n = 30; denture disinfecti

Age-related disruptions in ubiquitination and mitochondrial proteostasis are associated with neuronal compartment-specific mitochondrial changes.

Declining aerodigestive neuromotor function is a major aspect of human aging, with impaired airway defense and swallow manoeuvres implicated in pneumonia and dysphagia. Hypoglossal motor neurons (MNs) innervate tongue muscles, essential for these behaviours. Their degeneration contributes to age-related aerodigestive dysfunctions. In neurodegenerative diseases, the ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS) is altered, disturbing mitochondrial proteostasis. We have previously shown reduced mitochondrial abundance, dysfunction and mitochondrial fragmentation in aging hypoglossal MN somas and dendrites.

Regional airway fat distribution and its association with brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome severity in pugs with varying body condition.

Obesity is a recognised risk factor for brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS) in pugs; however, the mechanisms linking obesity to BOAS remain unclear. Previous veterinary studies have primarily focused on tongue fat, with limited evaluation of other airway regions. This study aimed to investigate the associations between body condition score (BCS) and regional airway fat, and their relationship with BOAS functional grades. Client-owned pugs undergoing BOAS assessment and pre-operative head and neck computed tomography (CT) were enrolled. Fat volumes within the tongue (T), pharynx (

Prevalence of Tongue Lesions in the Namakkal and Erode Districts: A Prospective Study.

Background Lesions of the tongue are markers of several systemic diseases and mirror the general health. In the Namakkal and Erode districts of Tamil Nadu - regions with high tobacco/areca nut usage and limited oral health infrastructure - prevalence data on tongue lesions remain sparse. Aim This study aimed to find out how frequently common tongue lesions occur in patients from these areas. Methods A total of 1,250 patients were examined, of which 880 presented with various tongue lesions. Demographic details and clinical examination findings of the lesions were recorded in a spreadsheet and

Development of a TaqMan Probe-Based Quantitative PCR Assay for the Detection of Cynoglossus semilaevis Papillomavirus.

Cynoglossus semilaevis papillomavirus (CsPaV) is an emerging viral pathogen associated with high mortality in farmed Chinese tongue soles. A sensitive, specific, and quantitative method is needed for CsPaV surveillance and epidemiological studies. In this study, we designed primers and a probe that targeted the CsPaV L1 gene. We then established a TaqMan probe-based quantitative PCR (qPCR) assay. The assay detected as few as 5.8 × 101 copies/µL and was 1000-fold more sensitive than conventional PCR. The assay did not cross-react with the other aquatic pathogens tested. The intra-assay coeffici

[Prehabilitation training program for patients with head and neck tumors-pathophysiology, target structures, and evidence-based exercises].

Oropharyngeal dysphagia secondary to head and neck cancer is common and significantly impacts quality of life, morbidity, mortality, and 5‑year survival rates. Functional impairments can result from tumor mass, location, surgical interventions, and (adjuvant) radio- or chemotherapy. Early identification of deficits and assessment of individual patient resources by a multidisciplinary team enable the development of tailored, targeted prehabilitative exercise programs aimed at preventing functional decline and fostering compensatory mechanisms. Central pathophysiological factors of dysphagia inc

Oral Glycogenic Acanthosis: A Clinicopathological Analysis of 13 Cases and Narrative Literature Review.

PURPOSE: Glycogenic acanthosis (GA) is a benign epithelial lesion characterized by intracellular glycogen accumulation, most seen in the esophagus. In the oral cavity, it is rarely reported and clinical recognition is low. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 13 cases of oral GA diagnosed between 2017 and 2025, assessing clinical presentation, histopathological characteristics and follow-up data. RESULTS: Thirteen cases were identified, with a median age of 61 years (range: 34–71) and a male predominance (76.9%). Lesions were asymptomatic, thin, homogeneous, often well-demarcated milky white p

[Guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of obstructive sleep apnea in adults (2025)].

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a highly prevalent sleep-related breathing disorder with a considerable healthcare burden. Previously, the 2011 guideline for adult obstructive sleep apnea was largely formulated on the basis of expert opinion and consensus, which played an important role in guiding clinical practice. With the growing body of evidence from high-quality clinical studies, however, guideline development models that rely primarily on expert consensus are no longer adequate to support contemporary clinical decision-making. To further standardize the screening, diagnosis, treatment,

[Lipoma on the Tongue].

Lipomas are benign mesenchymal tumors composed of mature adipose tissue. While common in the head and neck region, they are rarely found intraorally, representing 1-5 % of all tumors. The tongue is an uncommon site, despite isolated cases being reported. Clinically, lipomas present as slow-growing, soft, mobile nodules, including a shimmering yellowish appearance, beneath intact mucosa. Trauma and hereditary or metaplastic processes have been proposed as possible etiologic factors. Diagnosis is primarily clinical but must be confirmed histopathologically, especially due to overlapping features
