Unusual Presentation of Orofacial Granulomatosis Leading to the Incidental Diagnosis of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis: A Case Report.

Orofacial granulomatosis (OFG) is a rare chronic inflammatory disorder characterized by non-caseating granulomatous inflammation involving the oral and maxillofacial region. Its heterogeneous clinical presentation and overlap with systemic granulomatous diseases often make diagnosis challenging. We report the case of a 54-year-old woman presenting with a four-month history of progressive mandibular mucosal hypertrophy mimicking an epulis-like lesion. Clinical examination revealed multiple pedunculated, firm, painless mucosal lesions localized to the anterior mandibular ridge in a fully edentul

Angina Bullosa Hemorrhagica of the Ventral Tongue: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Angina bullosa hemorrhagica (ABH) is an abruptly developing oral blood blister that most often affects the soft palate. Ventral-tongue presentations are uncommon and can mimic traumatic, vascular, hematologic, or immune-mediated disease. A 78-year-old Saudi man with hypertension and Type 2 diabetes presented with a 3-day history of tongue discomfort and a solitary hemorrhagic bulla measuring 1.5 × 1.0 cm on the right ventral tongue. No other oral lesions, cutaneous involvement, or airway symptoms were present, and he reported a previous similar palatal lesion. Based on the characteristic clini

How Nutrient Deficiencies Impact the Oral Mucosa and How to Manage Them: A Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies may impact the oral mucosa even before any other symptoms become clinically obvious. This makes the oral cavity an important site for early detection of nutritional imbalance. Across the literature review, the most documented vitamin is vitamin B12. Other widely reported nutrients are iron, folate, and zinc. Less consistently documented are vitamins A, C, and D. Their correlation with recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS), atrophic glossitis, angular cheilitis, burning mouth symptoms (BMS), mucosal erythema, and oral candidiasis (OC) is bro

Incomplete Kawasaki Disease Complicated by Shock: A Diagnostic Challenge in a Child.

Kawasaki disease (KD) is an acute vasculitis of medium-sized vessels that primarily affects children. It can present with incomplete or atypical features, leading to diagnostic delay and increased risk of cardiovascular complications. Kawasaki disease shock syndrome (KDSS) is a rare but severe manifestation characterized by hemodynamic instability and heightened inflammatory response. We report the case of an eight-year-old previously healthy boy who presented with fever and unilateral cervical lymphadenitis following recent travel. Initial evaluation suggested an infectious etiology, and he w

Blood protein biomarkers in hepatocellular carcinoma: progress and challenges.

BACKGROUND: The cancer which appears in the mobile portion of the tongue is the most common neoplasm of the oral cavity. The objective of this study was to analyse oral tongue cancer epidemiology in a population of 610 patients diagnosed between 1990 and 2008 and detailed in the Tumour Registry of the Madrid region. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis based on the following variables provided in the Tumour Registry was achieved: age, gender, histology, stage, location, treatment. Descriptive and analytic statistics with these variables, using Pearson's Chi-square test to study the

In-home tongue swab testing for tuberculosis screening among household contacts in South Africa: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Household contact investigation for tuberculosis is limited by reliance on clinic-based testing and sputum-dependent diagnostics. To inform household-level screening strategies, we estimated the diagnostic accuracy of in-home molecular testing using tongue swabs compared with sputum, and quantified linkage to care among household contacts with confirmed tuberculosis. METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study at 26 government health clinics in South Africa. We recruited index patients with drug-sensitive pulmonary tuberculosis and their household contacts. Participants aged

Secondary syphilis as first presentation of HIV: a case report.

The simultaneous occurrence of HIV and syphilis poses an increasing difficulty due to the dynamic interplay between these two diseases. In recent years, the worldwide prevalence of co-infection between these two major global health issues has increased, partly because each infection can facilitate the acquisition of the other. We report a case of a 36-year-old diabetic male presenting to our clinic with scattered erythematous papules and plaques with a collarette of scale on the palms, soles, and genital area. The patient had geographic tongue with linear white plaques and fissuring. Virology

Preparation and application of IgM monoclonal antibodies in half-smooth tongue sole (Cynoglossus semilaevis).

In this study, the native IgM of half-smooth tongue sole (Cynoglossus semilaevis), an economically important marine flatfish, were purified, and used as the immunogen for preparation of monoclonal antibody (mAb). Based on the mAbs, double-antibody sandwich ELISA was constructed for the detection of IgM in C. semilaevis serum and capture ELISA were established for vaccine efficacy evaluation. Results showed that two monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) specifically targeting IgM of half-smooth tongue sole (Cynoglossus semilaevis) were successfully obtained (designated as 3A12 and 5F39). The mAbs exhibi

Glossitis in dogs arises from diverse etiologies but shows predominantly chronic ulcerative pathology and low clinical detection rates.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical and histopathological features of glossitis in dogs and determine its clinical-pathological correlation. METHODS: Medical records and pathology reports of dogs diagnosed with glossitis at the William R. Pritchard Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, University of California-Davis, were reviewed (2009 to 2024). Dogs diagnosed with glossitis that was confirmed histologically were included in the study. Dogs that had concurrent histological diagnosis of lingual neoplasia were excluded. RESULTS: 100 dogs were included. Awake oral examination failed to detect

Expression of V‑domain Ig suppressor of T cell activation in ovarian cancer and its regulation of follicular regulatory T‑cell function via the AKT/MAPK pathway.

BACKGROUND: Patients with eating disorders (ED) often suffer from compulsive exercise behavior, which is associated with lower short-term response to treatment and poorer long-term outcome. Evidence-based interventions specifically targeting compulsive exercise behavior have been scarce so far. We developed a manualized group therapeutic approach integrating cognitive-behavioral therapy, exercise therapy and exposure with response management to promote healthy exercise behavior. Our objective was to examine the feasibility and acceptance of this new approach as add-on to regular inpatient trea

A Two-Sample Mendelian Randomisation Analysis of the Oral Microbiome and Oral/Oropharyngeal/Tongue Cancers.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the potential causal relationships of the oral microbiome with the risks of oral cancer, oropharyngeal cancer, and tongue cancer using two-sample Mendelian randomisation (MR) analysis, while distinguishing these from reverse causal effects of the cancers on microbial abundance. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Using single-nucleotide polymorphisms as instrumental variables, we applied the MR inverse-variance-weighted approach to evaluate the effects of the dorsal-tongue and salivary microbiomes on oral, oropharyngeal, and tongue cancers. Analyses were conducted with the R package T

Structural basis for Mg²⁺-glycine synergy in the tandem glycine riboswitch revealed by cryo-EM.

Part I of this article discussed the potential functional importance of genetic mutations and alleles of the human cytochrome P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) gene. The impact of CYP2D6 polymorphisms on the clearance of and response to a series of cardiovascular drugs was addressed. Since CYP2D6 plays a major role in the metabolism of a large number of other drugs, Part II of the article highlights the impact of CYP2D6 polymorphisms on the response to other groups of clinically used drugs. Although clinical studies have observed a gene-dose effect for some tricyclic antidepressants, it is difficult to establ

Single and multiple oral giant cell fibromas: a case report and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Giant cell fibroma (GCF), a benign fibrous growth, accounts for about 4.7% of all oral benign or reactive fibrous growths. GCF commonly occurs in Caucasians, with a minor female predilection and a peak occurrence in the first three decades of life. Clinically, gingival nodules that are roughly 1 cm in diameter are commonly seen. Diagnosis relies on histopathological features, as clinical features are not sufficient on their own. CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we report Egyptian case series of three female and two male patients with GCFs, with age range from 15 to 64 years. Three of th

Next-generation pharmaceuticals: the rise of sildenafil citrate ODF for the treatment of men with erectile dysfunction.

Orodispersible film (ODF) is one of the novel formulations that disintegrate rapidly in the mouth without the requisite for water compared to other conventional oral solid dosage formulations. This delivery system serves as a convenient mode of administration, especially in patients who have dysphagia and fluid restriction, being beneficial to pediatric, geriatric, and bedridden patients. A novel sildenafil ODF containing sildenafil citrate is formulated to be used in patients with erectile dysfunction (ED). This review discusses the advantages of ODF in improving compliance and satisfaction i
