Zenker's diverticulum (ZD) is an acquired outpouching of the mucosa and the submucosa through a point of weakness between the inferior pharyngeal constrictor and the cricopharyngeus muscles. It commonly presents with dysphagia, regurgitation, and halitosis. We retrospectively reviewed seven patients treated with open cervical surgery between 2010 and 2025. Six underwent diverticulectomy and cricopharyngeal myotomy, and one underwent diverticulopexy. The mean age was 59.4 years, and 85.7% were male. All patients experienced dysphagia, and regurgitation and halitosis were present in 42.8% each.

Zenker's diverticulum (ZD) is an acquired hypopharyngeal outpouching resulting from upper esophageal sphincter dysfunction. Patients usually present with dysphagia, regurgitation, aspiration, or chronic cough, and the condition predominantly affects elderly individuals. Traditionally, open surgical approaches were considered the standard of care but have been associated with significant morbidity. Over the past two decades, endoscopic techniques have revolutionized the management of ZD. The basic principle of all endoscopic treatment approaches is cricopharyngeal myotomy, which relieves the fu

BACKGROUND: Barium esophagography is standard for esophageal lesions but may miss subtle small diverticula. Prior literatures have reported swallow contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (SCEUS) for esophageal diverticulum detection. This case presents a tiny cervical esophageal diverticulum misclassified as C-TIRADS 4A thyroid nodule, undetected by barium esophagography but visualized by SCEUS. We describe the imaging characteristics and incremental value of microbubble contrast for this easily misdiagnosed entity.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 38-year-old Chinese man with no initial

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Data on file with the US FDA, and other published studies, suggest that the selective cyclo-oxygenase (COX)-2 inhibitor NSAID rofecoxib has a greater hypertensive adverse effect than other NSAIDs, including celecoxib. In this study we describe a pharmacoepidemiologic analysis of spontaneous adverse event reports of acute, clinically serious hypertension (as defined by hospitalisation) reported in association with rofecoxib, celecoxib, nabumetone and oxaprozin. The objective of this analysis is to assess whether postmarketing data are consistent with results of clinica

Zenker's diverticulum (ZD) is an acquired, false, and pulsion diverticulum formed by the protrusion of mucosa and submucosa through Killian's dehiscence. The index case is a 91-year-old Nepali patient with a known history of diabetes mellitus, hypertension, rheumatic heart disease, and stage 4 chronic kidney disease, who has been experiencing dysphagia, halitosis, and chronic cough for 25 years. A computed tomography (CT) scan of the chest revealed an outpouching filled with air, fluid, and some solid contents, arising at the level of the cricoid cartilage and extending posteriorly to the esop

Esophageal diseases include esophageal obstruction, esophagitis, esophageal stricture, and esophageal diverticulum. Imaging can facilitate the selection of appropriate treatment options and assist in differential diagnosis. Esophageal obstruction in cattle is generally caused by greedy nature of chewing and swallowing of food and foreign structures, including stones, potatoes, trichobezoar, carrots, foodstuffs (i.e., hay), and rice chaff. Esophageal obstruction in cattle can also be caused by artificial procedures, and early detection and treatment are important to avoid severe esophageal inju

A Zenker's diverticulum (ZD) is an acquired hernia of the mucosa and submucosa at the pharyngoesophageal junction dorsally through Killian's triangle, considered a zone of weakness. The authors report their experience in the management of a case of a ZD with oral externalization following coughing. Surgery made by a multidisciplinary team consisted first of resection of the edematous exteriorized portion of the diverticulum. Second, endoscopic assistance helped to reduce the remaining portion of the diverticulum, and a right anterolateral cervicotomy allowed to remove it at the origin. Immedia

Esophagorespiratory fistula is a rare entity that occurs as a result of malignant and non-malignant causes. This condition is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Surgical repair has traditionally been the most common treatment and self-expandable metal stent are the first choice among non-surgical techniques. Here, we report a non-malignant bronchoesophageal fistula secondary to an esophageal diverticulum that was successfully closed using an over-the-scope clip.

Esophageal diverticulum refers to a sac or protrusion formed by the epithelial-lined tissue of the esophagus. It can exist as either a true diverticulum involving all layers of the esophagus or a false diverticulum. Most cases of esophageal diverticula are acquired conditions that primarily affect older individuals. Typically, patients with a known motility disorder experience dysphagia as a common symptom of esophageal diverticulum; other symptoms include recurrent pneumonia, hoarseness, and halitosis. Failure to diagnose this condition promptly or accurately can result in more severe complic

UNLABELLED: An 82-year-old male presented with progressive dysphagia and simultaneous hoarseness of voice for the past 6 months. He had mitral valve repair and a permanent pacemaker for a heart block 5 years ago. A computed tomographic scan of the neck demonstrated a cervical esophageal diverticulum. Oral Gastrogrifin contrast study confirmed esophageal diverticulum in Killian-Jamieson space. Open surgical diverticulectomy was performed safely. Patient's dysphagia resolved immediately, and he regained his normal voice after 6 weeks.

INTRODUCTION: Zenker's diverticulum is an acquired sac-like outpouching of the mucosa and submucosa layers originating at the pharyngoesophageal junction. The predominant symptom of Zenker's diverticulum is dysphagia. Videofluoroscopy confirms the diagnosis. Forestier disease is a clinical entity characterized by ossification of anterolateral vertebral ligament and anterior osteophyte formation along the anterolateral spinal column. Its etiopathogenesis remains unknown and common symptoms are dysphagia, dysphonia and airway obstruction. The objective of this study is to identify a pathophysiol

BACKGROUND: Kommerell's diverticulum is a rare vascular anomaly characterized as an outpouch at the onset of an aberrant subclavian artery. In the variant of a right-sided aortic arch, the trachea and esophagus are enclosed dorsally by the arch. In the configuration of an aberrant left subclavian artery, a Kommerell's diverticulum and persisting ductus arteriosus or ductal ligament enclose the lateral side, forming a vascular ring which may result in (symptomatic) esophageal or tracheal compression. Spontaneous rupture of an aneurysmatic Kommerell's diverticulum has also been reported. Due to

Zenker's diverticulum (ZD) is a bag-like pharyngeal pouch that protrudes to the outside of the pharynx. It is thought to be an acquired disease that occurs following the dysfunction of laryngopharynx muscle, and certain body shapes may be predisposed to this condition. We report a 56-year-old female of slim build with ZD. Computed tomography scanning revealed a hypodense lesion on the left posterior side of her upper esophagus that was filled with air and had no obvious wall. To verify this finding, a barium esophagogram was carried out which showed a round pouch at the level of the 6th cervic

INTRODUCTION: Zenker's diverticulum is an acquired mucosal pulsion of the upper esophagus. The aim of this paper is to report a case of Zenker's diverticulum with a complicated postoperative course including infection by Acinetobacter baumannii causing diagnostic as well as management dilemma.
CASE REPORT: A 43-year-old male complained from dysphagia for three months. Barium swallow revealed Zenker's diverticulum. Under general anesthesia, the small Zenker's diverticulum was ligated and myotomy was done. He developed erythematous swelling at the site of the operation. The patient was taken to

BACKGROUND: Fistulization is a rare complication of esophageal diverticula. Patients with this condition often require surgery, which unfortunately can be invasive and traumatic. Endoscopic therapy is an alternative method for treating esophageal fistula. Hereby we introduce a new endoscopic technique that uses an esophageal pedicle flap to close esophageal fistulas.
CASE SUMMARY: A 49-year-old male patient, complaining of backache and choking, was formerly diagnosed with chronic bronchopneumonia. Chest computed tomography and esophagram confirmed the presence of esophageal diverticulum and m

BACKGROUND: Esophageal stricture (ES) is an uncommon clinic entity in pediatrics that may be congenital or acquired in childhood. Acquired noncaustic ES is very rare, and clinical features of affected patients are unknown.
PURPOSE: We aimed to evaluate the clinical findings, and outcomes of patients with acquired noncaustic ES to aid physicians in the early referral of patients to gastroenterologists.
METHODS: The medical data of patients with acquired noncaustic ES who were followed in our gastroenterology clinic between January 2009 and December 2019 were reviewed.
RESULTS: Acquired nonca

Tracheal diverticulum is a rarely congenital or acquired tracheal benign entity, characterized by round or spherical out-pouching of the tracheal wall. Most of the tracheal diverticula are asymptomatic disease, and therefore surgical treatment has not been widely reported. Symptomatic diverticula can accept conservative treatment such as anti-inflammatory, postural drainage, etc. Transcervical resection or endoscopic laser surgery or electrosurgery should be considered for patients with severe symptoms or combined with repeated tracheobronchial inflammation. However, there is still insufficien

INTRODUCTION: Pharyngitis is one of the major and commonly seen presentations in pediatric emergency departments. While it could be caused by both bacterial and viral pathogens, antibiotics are improperly prescribed regardless of the pathogen. Inappropriate usage of antibiotics has risen the concern of microbial resistance and the need for stricter guidelines. Many guidelines have been validated for this reason, and the Centor score (Modified/McIsaac) is most commonly implemented. This study aims to assess the adherence and enumerate the reasons behind the suboptimal adherence to guidelines (C

Tracheal diverticula are rare benign entities characterized by small air-filled invaginations in the paratracheal area. They may be single or multiple, and usually present with nonspecific symptoms. Ideally, computed tomography imaging studies are used to confirm the diagnosis, followed by surgical resection as the treatment of choice. We present the case of a woman with an acquired tracheal diverticulum, with dysphagia as the only presenting symptom.

BACKGROUND: The reports on acquired tracheoesophageal fistulas (TEFs) or bronchoesophageal fistulas (BEFs) associated with traction esophageal diverticula (TED) are rare. Here, we present our experience of six cases.
METHODS: Between Jan. 2015 and Jun. 2016, 6 patients were admitted to our department for TEF/BEFs combined with esophageal diverticula. Clinical data of the 6 patients were retrospectively reviewed.
RESULTS: All orifices of TEF/BEF in the esophagus side opened at the diverticula wall. The orifices in the airway side were 2 at the carina and 4 at the right intermediate bronchus.
