Evaluation of Four Biomarkers in Patients Chronically Infected with Trypanosoma cruzi and Their Relationship with Disease Progression.

This study evaluated four biomarkers of inflammation or fibrosis as progression indicators for heart disease in patients with Chagas disease. We compared values of these markers at the time of the first sample collection of blood (first time point) and at the time of the last collection of blood (second time point) for 103 individuals positive for Trypanosoma cruzi antibodies. They were split into two clinical groups: 52 individuals with the indeterminate form of the disease at the first time point and 51 controls that already had either cardiac involvement (N = 25) or megaviscera (megaesophag

Resveratrol and Curcumin for Chagas Disease Treatment-A Systematic Review.

Chagas disease (CD) is a neglected protozoan infection caused by Trypanosoma cruzi, which affects about 7 million people worldwide. There are two available drugs in therapeutics, however, they lack effectiveness for the chronic stage-characterized mainly by cardiac (i.e., cardiomyopathy) and digestive manifestations (i.e., megaesophagus, megacolon). Due to the involvement of the immuno-inflammatory pathways in the disease's progress, compounds exhibiting antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity seem to be effective for controlling some clinical manifestations, mainly in the chronic phase. IMPAIRED QUALITY OF LIFE IN CHAGAS ACALASIA PATIENTS AND ASSOCIATED CLINICAL FACTORS.

BACKGROUND: No study has focused on Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) for Chagas Achalasia patients. Objective: To compare HRQoL between Chagas Achalasia patients and the general population; and to correlate HRQoL with clinical factors that can affect it. METHODS: Sixty Chagas Achalasia patients and 50 controls were evaluated. All patients underwent esophageal manometry for the diagnosis of achalasia and esophagogram to determine the grade of megaesophagus. Three questionnaires were used: 1) clinical: the following data were collected: demographic, medical history, body mass index, occur

Chagas Disease Megaesophagus Patients Carrying Variant MRPS18B P260A Display Nitro-Oxidative Stress and Mitochondrial Dysfunction in Response to IFN-γ Stimulus.

Chagas disease (CD), caused by the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, affects 8 million people, and around 1/3 develop chronic cardiac (CCC) or digestive disease (megaesophagus/megacolon), while the majority remain asymptomatic, in the indeterminate form of Chagas disease (ASY). Most CCC cases in families with multiple Chagas disease patients carry damaging mutations in mitochondrial genes. We searched for exonic mutations associated to chagasic megaesophagus (CME) in genes essential to mitochondrial processes. We performed whole exome sequencing of 13 CME and 45 ASY patients. We found the

Management of Esophageal Dysphagia in Chagas Disease.

Chagas disease, caused by the infection of the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, has clinical consequences in the heart and digestive tract. The most important changes in the digestive tract occur in the esophagus (megaesophagus) and colon (megacolon). Esophageal dysfunction in Chagas disease results from damage of the esophageal myenteric plexus, with loss of esophageal peristalsis, partial or absent lower esophageal sphincter relaxation, and megaesophagus, which characterizes secondary esophageal achalasia. The treatment options for the disease are similar to those for idiopathic achalas

Locally Transmitted Trypanosoma cruzi in a Domestic Llama (Lama glama) in a Rural Area of Greater New Orleans, Louisiana, USA.

Trypanosoma cruzi-associated megaesophagus was diagnosed in a domestic Louisiana-born llama with no significant travel history. The llama resided in the same rural area of greater New Orleans, Louisiana, where the first human autochthonous case of Chagas disease was identified in the state. Venous blood from the llama tested positive for T. cruzi kinetoplastid DNA by conventional PCR. The cardiac evaluation was unremarkable, while thoracic radiographs revealed generalized megaesophagus. The llama received supportive care, but was ultimately humanely euthanized. The esophagus was severely diste

MICA and KIR: Immunogenetic Factors Influencing Left Ventricular Systolic Dysfunction and Digestive Clinical Form of Chronic Chagas Disease.

Tissue damage observed in the clinical forms of chronic symptomatic Chagas disease seems to have a close relationship with the intensity of the inflammatory process. The objective of this study was to investigate whether the MICA (MHC class I-related chain A) and KIR (killer cell immunoglobulin-like receptors) polymorphisms are associated with the cardiac and digestive clinical forms of chronic Chagas disease. Possible influence of these genes polymorphisms on the left ventricular systolic dysfunction (LVSD) in patients with chronic Chagas heart disease was also evaluated. This study enrolled

Cross-Sectional Study of Swallowing Phases in Cases of Megaesophagus Caused by Chagas Disease.

BACKGROUND: Chagas disease, caused by the flagellate protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi, is an infectious cause of secondary achalasia and megaesophagus. Moreover, the oral and pharyngeal phases of swallowing may also be affected, which may contribute to dysphagia and increase the possibility of airway aspiration during and/or after swallowing. This cross-sectional study evaluated, with videofluoroscopy, the oral, pharyngeal, and esophageal phases of swallowing in patients with megaesophagus caused by Chagas disease. The hypothesis is that there is impairment of the pharyngeal phase of swallowing tha

Global use of asbestos - legitimate and illegitimate issues.

INTRODUCTION: Advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) offer new Information Technology (IT) opportunities in various applications and fields (industry, health, etc.). The medical informatics scientific community expends tremendous effort on the management of diseases affecting vital organs making it a complex disease (lungs, heart, brain, kidneys, pancreas, and liver). Scientific research becomes more complex when several organs are simultaneously affected, as is the case with Pulmonary Hypertension (PH), which affects both the lungs and the heart. Therefore, early detection and diagnosis of

Megacolon with infectious etiology that is infrequent in our country: Chagas disease.

We present the case of a 37-year-old male with constipation refractory to medical treatment, in the context of megacolon due to Chagas disease. The entire gastrointestinal tract may be affected but the digestive form is characterized by megaesophagus and megacolon. There is altered peristalsis due to the destruction of the neurons of the enteric nervous system caused by the parasite. Although the mortality rate is low, the disease can have a considerable impact upon quality of life. Chagas disease is poorly recognized and undertreated by healthcare providers in non-endemic regions.

Precision Health for Chagas Disease: Integrating Parasite and Host Factors to Predict Outcome of Infection and Response to Therapy.

Chagas disease, caused by the infection with the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, is clinically manifested in approximately one-third of infected people by inflammatory heart disease (cardiomyopathy) and, to a minor degree, gastrointestinal tract disorders (megaesophagus or megacolon). Chagas disease is a zoonosis transmitted among animals and people through the contact with triatomine bugs, which are found in much of the western hemisphere, including most countries of North, Central and South America, between parallels 45° north (Minneapolis, USA) and south (Chubut Province, Argentina).

Trypanosoma cruzi Promotes Transcriptomic Remodeling of the JAK/STAT Signaling and Cell Cycle Pathways in Myoblasts.

Chagas disease is responsible for more than 10,000 deaths per year and about 6 to 7 million infected people worldwide. In its chronic stage, patients can develop mega-colon, mega-esophagus, and cardiomyopathy. Differences in clinical outcomes may be determined, in part, by the genetic background of the parasite that causes Chagas disease. Trypanosoma cruzi has a high genetic diversity, and each group of strains may elicit specific pathological responses in the host. Conflicting results have been reported in studies using various combinations of mammalian host-T. cruzi strains. We previously pr
