The purpose of this study was to compare duodenal ulcer healing, symptom relief, and safety of lansoprazole (a new proton pump inhibitor) given at doses of 30 mg and 60 mg, in the morning with ranitidine 300 mg at bedtime. Two hundred and eighty nine patients were enrolled over a 20 month period in a double blind randomised parallel group comparative study set in outpatient endoscopy units of six United Kingdom medical centres. Patients were randomised to receive lansoprazole 30 mg in the morning (n = 95), 60 mg in the morning (n = 96), or ranitidine 300 mg at bedtime (n = 98) for four weeks.

We have assessed the relationship between histologic findings and the Helicobacter pylori (HP) colonization in 115 patients (age: 9.8 +/- 3.5 years) with HP infection. Normal antral histology was found in 8.7% of the patients. Signs of histological activity were observed in 58.2% of the patients and glandular lesions in 3.5%. Presently, more and more patients are being offered a minimally invasive surgical procedure for the management of chronic duodenal ulcer disease. Forty-two gastric biopsies, in two transport media, were homogenized and cultured on three media under micro-aerophilic conditions. Brain-heart infusion agar with a commercial antibiotic supplement (giving 10 mg vancomycin, 5 mg trimethoprim and 2500 i.u. polymixin per litre) yielded the best results. The work deals with the results of SPV in combination with prolonged drug blockade of the celiac plexus in 78 patients with duodenal ulcers. The motor activity of the antral part of the stomach intensified and its blood supply increased after blockade of the celiac plexus. The course of the immediate postoperative period improved after SPV and the number of patients with hypokinesia of the stomach reduced.

This double-blind study assessed the acute development of NSAID-associated gastroduodenal (GD) damage and its prevention by misoprostol. Patients requiring chronic NSAID therapy were stratified into two groups depending on initial endoscopic appearance, Group I: normal (n = 223); Group II: non-ulcer lesions (n = 78).
