We examined the anti-ulcer effects of FRG-8813, a new type histamine H2-receptor antagonist, on various experimental gastric and duodenal lesions in rats. FRG-8813, administered orally, inhibited the formation of lesions dose-dependently in experimental models with the exception of the Shay ulcer model. The anti-ulcer potency of FRG-8813 was 4 approximately 10 times greater than that of cimetidine when the ED50 values of both compounds were compared. The etiology, natural history, epidemiology, prevention, and treatment of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)-induced gastrointestinal (GI) effects are reviewed. Duodenal ulcer healing depends on the degree and length of inhibition of gastric secretion and upon the duration of therapy, while gastric ulcer healing is dependent mainly on the duration of therapy. A 41-year-old man with rheumatoid arthritis developed severe acute hepatitis 3 days after starting cimetidine for duodenal ulcer. Other causes were ruled out and he recovered after cimetidine was discontinued. Mild transient elevations of hepatic enzymes have been reported in 3.6% of patients taking cimetidine. However, only 12 cases of severe acute hepatitis associated with cimetidine, mostly secondary to idiosyncrasy, have been reported in the English literature. This rare but serious complication of cimetidine should be kept in mind.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori in 400 patients referred for upper digestive tract endoscopy. In our area it hasn't developed yet any epidemiologic study about this disease. Helicobacter pylori was observed in 281 of the 400 patients studied (70%). There is evidence in the scientific literature that peptic ulceration occurs less frequently during pregnancy than at other times. This encouraged us to examine the pattern of hospitalisation for peptic ulcer in the Oxford-Family Planning Association contraceptive study.
