Helicobacter pylori can be considered a very successful organism effectively colonizing the majority of the world's population. Although various disease states associated with this infection have been described, the mechanisms of pathogenicity remain unknown. The easiest virulence factors to identify are those enabling the organism to colonize the hazardous microenvironment of the gastric epithelium, survive at this site, and multiply sufficiently for transmission to a new host. According to the day-prescription of acupoint mentioned by Xu Feng in Encyclopaedia of Acupuncture and Moxibustion, the authors used opening acupoints to treat 31 chronic superficial gastritis patients (young male) and closing points to treat 15 patients for comparison. Fifty dyspeptic patients with histologically proven chronic superficial antral gastritis were treated for 6 weeks, in a randomized single-blind study, with esaprazole (450 mg bid) or sulglicotide (200 mg tid). In 862 unselected gastroscopies we could confirm the high percentage of campylobacter pylori infection in the antral gastric mucosa strongly associated with chronic superficial gastritis and active inflammatory signs. A series of 417 endoscopic brush cytology-multiple biopsy specimens from 220 patients with clinically suspected gastritis was studied, with a 6-year follow-up, to find out whether brush cytology and histology combined provided better results than histology alone, in the endoscopic diagnosis of benign gastric ulcer. A highly sensitive enzyme immunoassay was used to determine gastric juice prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) levels in control subjects with or without gastritis and in both active or inactive duodenal ulcer patients. Mean pentagastrin-stimulated PGE2 concentration was significantly lower in patients with duodenal ulcer than in control subjects considered as a whole group (with or without gastritis). Thirty patients with gastritis associated with chronic liver disease and ten normal controls were the subject of this study. Pathologically about 18 were diagnosed as chronic atrophic gastritis, 10 as chronic superficial gastritis, 1 as gastric atrophy and 1 as hypertrophic gastritis.
