Pediatric colonic diverticulitis: clinical presentation, management, and review of the literature.

Colonic diverticulitis is rare in the pediatric population and often presents with nonspecific symptoms that may be misdiagnosed as other causes of acute abdominal pain, such as appendicitis, leading to diagnostic uncertainty and variability in management. We report a case of pediatric colonic diverticulitis and present a systematic review to characterize its clinical presentation, diagnostic challenges and management. Clinical data for the index patient were retrospectively reviewed, and parental consent was obtained. A structured literature search was performed using PubMed, Scopus, and Emba

Rare Groin Hernias With Unusual Sac Contents: A Systematic Review of Anatomical Variants and Surgical Implications.

Groin hernias are commonly encountered in general surgical practice. Most of these hernias have a typical anatomical structure and contain the usual type of hernia sac content. Still, in some rare cases, a hernia may show abnormal anatomy or contain unexpected material within the sac, which can affect both how it presents clinically and the surgical approach needed for treatment. This systematic review seeks to give an overview of rare groin hernias with unusual sac contents, detail their anatomical variations, describe their clinical features and diagnostic difficulties, and discuss the impli

Trauma-Associated Perforation of a Duodenal Ulcer With Concomitant Acute Appendicitis Presenting As Generalized Peritonitis: A Case Report.

A perforated duodenal ulcer is a potentially life-threatening surgical emergency that may present with generalized peritonitis and require prompt operative management. Although most cases are related to peptic ulcer disease, clinical presentation following blunt abdominal trauma can create diagnostic uncertainty, particularly when imaging findings are non-specific or suggest an alternative intra-abdominal source. We report the case of a 68-year-old man with no significant medical history who presented with progressive abdominal pain four days after a ground-level fall. Physical examination rev

Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Risk of Periprosthetic Joint Infection After Total Joint Arthroplasty: A Systematic Review of the Current Literature.

BACKGROUND: Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is a severe complication after total joint arthroplasty (TJA). Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) may plausibly increase this risk because of chronic systemic inflammation, intestinal barrier dysfunction, malnutrition, and exposure to immunosuppressive therapies; however, the available orthopedic literature is sparse and heterogeneous. METHODS: This systematic review was revised in accordance with PRISMA 2020 principles and the PRISMA 2020 for Abstracts recommendations. The primary review question was whether patients with IBD undergoing total hi

Supporting Health Care Professions Learners Experiencing Grief Using the TEARS Framework: A Workshop for Interprofessional Educators.

INTRODUCTION: Health care professionals experience grief reactions as part of their work, yet education in processing these experiences is limited. Learners are particularly vulnerable, as they are known to experience strong emotional reactions and often lack tools or space to process difficult experiences. To address this gap, we developed a novel workshop introducing a structured approach to help educators support learners experiencing grief. METHODS: We conducted a 1-hour virtual workshop at 2 pediatric institutions for interprofessional health professions educators. Facilitators introduce

Study of the Distance between the Base of the Vermiform Appendix and the Ileocaecal Junction in Bangladeshi People of Different Age and Sex Groups.

The vermiform appendix is a narrow, muscular diverticulum of the cecum, exhibiting considerable variability in position, shape and size. It originates from the cecal fundus near the ileocecal valve at the convergence of the three taeniae coli, a key surgical landmark for identifying its base. This study aimed to determine the distance between the base of the vermiform appendix and the ileocecal junction in a Bangladeshi population across different age and sex groups. Specimens, including the vermiform appendix along with adjacent segments of the distal ileum, cecum and proximal ascending colon

A Rare Case of Gangrenous Meckel's Diverticulum and Acute Appendicitis Presenting As Closed-Loop Obstruction in a Young Adult.

Meckel's diverticulum is the most common congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract, arising from incomplete obliteration of the vitelline duct. Although often asymptomatic, it can present with life-threatening complications such as inflammation, bleeding, intestinal obstruction, and perforation. Closed-loop obstruction secondary to Meckel's diverticulum is rare, and its coexistence with acute appendicitis is exceptionally uncommon, posing a diagnostic challenge. We report the case of a 22-year-old male who presented to the emergency department with a two-day history of diffuse abdominal

Appendico-Sigmoid Fistula as a Rare Complication of Chronic or Recurrent Appendicitis: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Appendico-colic fistula is a rare condition characterized by an abnormal communication between the appendix and colon, most commonly involving the sigmoid colon (ie, appendico-sigmoid fistula) because of their close anatomical proximity. It is usually associated with chronic or recurrent appendicitis, diverticular disease, inflammatory bowel disease, or malignancy. Preoperative diagnosis is challenging due to nonspecific clinical and radiologic findings. CASE REPORT A 46-year-old woman presented with a 3-month history of lower abdominal pain, which had worsened over the preceding 15

Concurrent Amyand and Littre Hernias With Incidental Hodgkin Lymphoma: A Diagnostic and Surgical Challenge.

We report a rare case of a 62-year-old man with a right giant inguinoscrotal hernia and a concurrent retroperitoneal mass. Preoperative imaging was inconclusive regarding the hernia sac contents and the nature of the pelvic mass. Intraoperatively, the hernia sac contained the caecum, appendix, Meckel's diverticulum (MD) and terminal ileum-confirming the simultaneous presence of Amyand and Littre hernias. Additionally, a left-sided retroperitoneal solid-cystic mass was identified and excised. This case underscores the diagnostic difficulties posed by complex hernias and highlighted the surgical

Intestinal nonrotation with left-sided appendiceal microperforation mimicking colonic perforation: CT diagnostic pitfall and successful conservative treatment.

Intestinal nonrotation is an uncommon subtype of intestinal malrotation that may place the cecum and appendix in the left lower quadrant, creating a diagnostic pitfall in patients with left-sided abdominal pain. A 49-year-old man presented with a 3-day history of progressive left lower quadrant pain, fever, vomiting, and diarrhea. Contrast-enhanced CT demonstrated predominantly right-sided small bowel and left-sided colon, with the cecum and appendix located in the left iliac fossa. The appendix measured 9 mm in diameter and showed wall thickening, hyperenhancement, surrounding fat stranding,

Rare causes of acute abdomen in a paediatric surgery department: a 5-years review.

AIMS: Acute abdomen is a common indication to surgery in paediatric emergency departments. Appendicitis is the most frequent diagnosis, followed by bowel obstruction and female genital conditions. Some rare aetiologies may lead to challenges in surgical management. Aim of this study is to analyse the distribution of rare causes of acute abdomen in patients undergoing emergency surgery in the past five years at our centre. METHODS: Records of patients undergone urgent abdominal surgery were retrospectively reviewed from 2015 to 2019. Information relative to age, sex, underlying pathology, and

Hampi Tariki Kit: thin-layer chromatography for semiquantitative screening of solid oral medicines in Peru.

INTRODUCTION: Essential precondition for the development of cervical cancer is a persistent human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. The majority - approximately 70% - of cervical carcinomas is caused by two high-risk HPV types (16 and 18). Recently, two vaccines have been approved to the German market with the potential to induce protection against HPV 16 and HPV 18 among additional low-risk virus types. OBJECTIVES: To analyse whether HPV vaccination is effective with regard to the reduction of cervical cancer and precursors of cervical carcinoma (CIN), respectively? Does HPV vaccination repres

Identifying people's energy information needs through Energy Citizen Personas.

UNLABELLED: Renal tuberculosis (TB) is an extrapulmonary form of TB, and is becoming more common and challenging to treat. This is because many anti-tubercular drugs have nephrotoxicity and have poor drug penetration into renal tissues. These problems highlight the urgent need for safer, kidney-targeted treatment regimes, particularly in patients with compromised kidney function. Thus, this study investigates lysozyme, which is a low-molecular-weight protein and has natural kidney-affinity, as a potential carrier for targeted renal drug delivery. Here, a comprehensive in silico approach has be

Longitudinal assessment of physiological and mental health changes following acute COVID-19 in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Understanding synapse-specific effects of neuroinflammation can provide mechanistic and therapeutically relevant insights across the spectrum of neurological diseases. METHODS: We applied neuron-specific proteomic biotinylation in vivo, differential centrifugation of brain for crude synaptosome enrichment (P2 fraction) and mass spectrometry (MS) analysis of biotinylated proteins to derive native-state proteomes of Camk2a-positive neurons and their corresponding P2 synaptic compartments. Next, in an in vivo model of systemic lipopolysaccharide (LPS) dosing, we examined the effects

Towards credible digital twins for basic and preclinical research.

Atomoxetine (Strattera(R)) is a selective norepinephrine (noradrenaline) reuptake inhibitor that is not classified as a stimulant, and is indicated for use in patients with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Atomoxetine is effective and generally well tolerated. It is significantly more effective than placebo and standard current therapy and does not differ significantly from or is noninferior to immediate-release methylphenidate; however, it is significantly less effective than the extended-release methylphenidate formulation OROS(R) methylphenidate (hereafter referred to as osm

Primary retroperitoneal pseudomyxoma masquerading as a benign retroperitoneal abscess from an ascending colon subacute perforation: a case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Pseudomyxoma peritonei is a neoplastic process characterized by diffuse mucinous implants on peritoneal surfaces arising from mucin-producing tumors. Rarely, pseudomyxoma from a ruptured mucin-producing tumor can be confined to the retroperitoneum, termed "retroperitoneal pseudomyxoma" or "extraperitoneal pseudomyxoma." This entity often masquerades as a retroperitoneal abscess of benign etiology. CASE PRESENTATION: A 58-year-old man presented with a symptomatic retroperitoneal cystic mass with a fistulous communication to the ascending colon seen at colonoscopy,

Microbiological spectrum and antimicrobial resistance patterns in pediatric acute appendicitis: implications for evidence-based empirical therapy.

BACKGROUND: Acute appendicitis is one of the most common surgical emergencies in children, and timely empirical antimicrobial therapy is particularly important in complicated cases. However, antibiotic selection is increasingly challenged by regional variability in pathogen distribution and antimicrobial resistance. This study aimed to characterize the microbiological spectrum and antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of purulent specimens from pediatric patients with acute appendicitis and to provide evidence for optimized empirical therapy. METHODS: In this prospective observational study,
