OBJECTIVES: To investigate the incidence and nature of unusual histopathological findings in appendectomy specimens and assess their impact on post-appendectomy management.
METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on patients who underwent appendectomies at Jordan University Hospital between January 2015 and December 2024. It included patients with presumed diagnoses of acute appendicitis or those who underwent incidental appendectomies during other surgical procedures. Pathology reports with complete data and slides showing unusual findings were retrieved from the archives of the histopa

BACKGROUND: Acute appendicitis is a common abdominal surgical emergency and is a major cause of acute abdomen in more than 20% of cases. Although various studies have been conducted in recent years on topics such as surgical techniques and antibiotic treatment of appendicitis, today there is a lack of large-scale studies focused on the different severity levels of acute appendicitis and their management. The study aimed to analyze the severity, types of surgical techniques, and mortality associated with acute appendicitis to identify possible developments.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospectiv

INTRODUCTION: Appendiceal diverticulitis is an uncommon pathology that imitates acute appendicitis and is usually treated by appendicectomy.
CASES PRESENTATION: We present two cases: a 50-year-old female patient and a 35-year-old male patient, both of whom presented with signs and symptoms of acute appendicitis and were managed accordingly. Final pathological examination confirmed the presence of an appendiceal diverticulum.
CLINICAL DISCUSSION: Diverticulitis of the appendix is four times more likely to lead to perforation when compared to appendicitis and may be associated with underlying

BACKGROUND: Meckel's diverticulitis is the inflammation of Meckel's diverticulum (MD), a common congenital structural abnormality of the gastrointestinal tract. The simultaneous occurrence of Meckel's diverticulitis with acute appendicitis is extremely rare.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 17-year-old male presented with acute abdominal pain and vomiting, accompanied by tenderness in the right iliac fossa. Laboratory investigations revealed neutrophilia and an elevated leukocyte count, while ultrasound findings were consistent with acute appendicitis. The patient underwent an emergency open appendectomy

Appendicovesical fistula (AVF) is a rare condition that occurs in children characterized by an abnormal communication between the appendix and the bladder, caused by diseases such as inflammation or malignancy. Due to the lack of specific clinical symptoms and the difficulty in confirming the diagnosis with traditional imaging examinations such as ultrasound and CT, the disease often has a protracted course. This paper reports a case of a pediatric case of AVF presenting with dysuria, urinary frequency, and diarrhea. The diagnosis was confirmed by contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS), and the p

CONTEXT: Acute appendicitis is a common surgical emergency. While clinical diagnosis is generally effective, it is not perfect, potentially leading to negative appendectomies or delayed treatment.
AIMS: This study investigated the histopathological patterns of appendectomy specimens in King Khalid Hospital, Hail Province, Saudi Arabia, correlating them with preoperative clinical diagnoses to assess diagnostic accuracy and guide optimal management.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 198 patients who underwent appendectomies between August 2023 and July 2024. Resec

BACKGROUND Late-onset mesh infection after inguinal hernia repair is uncommon, and onset occurring years later is rare. Risk factors include field or implant contamination, host factors, such as diabetes and chronic steroids, and secondary fistulae with adjacent organs. CASE REPORT An 86-year-old man underwent right inguinal hernia repair with the Prolene Hernia System about 10 years earlier. He presented with right lower quadrant pain. Computed tomography (CT) showed an abscess tracking from the appendiceal tip to the right lower abdominal wall, suggesting mesh infection. Symptoms improved wi

OBJECTIVES: Appendiceal diverticulitis (AD) is frequently confused with acute appendicitis (AA); however, AD carries a higher risk of perforation and malignancy than AA. We aimed to evaluate the preoperative diagnostic ability of transabdominal ultrasonography (US) for AD.
METHODS: We included 74 patients who underwent appendectomy with a preoperative diagnosis of AA, AD, and US within a day of surgery. AD was diagnosed using US by identifying protruding, pouch-like hypoechoic structures beyond the appendiceal margin, whereas it was diagnosed using histopathology by identifying the invaginati

Agrotisvillenensis sp. nov. is described from the Iberian Peninsula. Differential superficial, genital and genetic (barcode) characters from its closest Iberian and European relative species, Agrotisvestigialis (Hufnagel, 1766), are presented. Morphologically, the new species is best characterized in the male genitalia by the shape of the basal vesica and the presence of a median diverticulum and in the female genitalia by its comparatively long appendix bursae. The barcode of A.villenensis differs from those of related species and is assigned a unique BIN.

INTRODUCTION: Acute appendicitis is one of the most common causes of abdominal pain in children and is considered the most frequent paediatric surgical emergency. The incidence progresses from extremely low in the neonatal period to a peak incidence between ages 12 and 18 years. Prompt diagnosis and management are imperative to prevent serious complications such as perforation, peritonitis, intra-abdominal abscess formation and bowel obstruction. Laparoscopy has improved intra- and post-operative outcomes for children with appendicitis. This study was conducted to evaluate demographics and com

Background: Following the COVID-19 pandemic, antibiotic therapy has become the first-line treatment for acute appendicitis (AA) in many centers. Interval appendectomy (IA) is often needed later due to symptom recurrence. This paper aimed to report our experience with early, unplanned laparoscopic IA (LIA) over the past 2 years. Materials and Methods: All patients with previous AA initially managed with antibiotics who underwent LIA due to symptom recurrence over the period January 2022-March 2024 were enrolled. Parameters assessed included patients' characteristics and operative outcomes. Resu

A 45-year-old female presented to the Emergency Department with acute right lower quadrant (RLQ) pain. Her past medical history was significant for heavy menstrual bleeding and moderate dysmenorrhea, though a diagnosis of endometriosis had never been established previously. Initial work-up revealed anemia and leucocytosis. A CT of the abdomen and pelvis showed an enlarged structure in RLQ along the medial border of the cecum, suspicious for acute appendicitis with a retained rupture. CA19-9, CA-125, and CEA were sent, of which only CA-125 was elevated at 92.7 U/mL (reference range: 0-35 U/mL).

Appendiceal duplication is an exceptionally rare anomaly, with an incidence ranging from 0.004% to 0.009%. Most cases are asymptomatic and remain undetected on imaging, with diagnosis usually established incidentally during laparotomy performed for other intra-abdominal conditions. The differential diagnosis includes cecal diverticulum, mesenteric adenitis, epiploic appendagitis, and neoplasms of the colon or appendix. We report the case of a 22-year-old man whose preoperative findings and intraoperative appearance suggested appendiceal duplication. Histopathological examination, however, demo

BACKGROUND: Appendiceal diverticulosis is a rare and often underdiagnosed entity with significant clinical implications. Limited data are available regarding its incidence, clinicopathological features, and optimal management strategies.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 6836 appendectomy specimens at our institution between January 2013 and December 2024. Cases diagnosed with appendiceal diverticulosis were identified, and their demographic, clinical, radiological, and pathological data were analyzed. The incidence, presentation, complications, and association with neoplasms were assessed

There has been a marked increase over the last two decades in pediatric cases involving ingestion of multiple magnets, which can cause serious, potentially life-threatening gastrointestinal complications. More than half of such incidents require surgery, and nearly three-quarters are managed via laparotomy. Magnet extraction through laparoscopic appendectomy has been described as a viable, minimally invasive method in selected cases. We report the case of a seven-year-old boy with a staggered ingestion of two magnetic spheres. The initial abdominal radiograph showed the magnets in separate loc

Meckel's diverticulum is the most common congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract, yet it remains asymptomatic in the majority of cases. When complications occur, they typically include bleeding, obstruction, or inflammation. The combination of intussusception leading to a subsequent small bowel volvulus is an exceedingly rare presentation, particularly in the adolescent population, and poses a significant diagnostic challenge, often mimicking more common conditions such as acute appendicitis. We present the case of a 15-year-old female who presented to the emergency department with a

BACKGROUND: There is a lack of real-world studies on the safety of Ilaris in large populations. The purpose of this study was to investigate adverse events (AEs) associated with Ilaris using data from the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database to guide clinical use.
METHODS: We evaluated retrospectively extracted reports of AEs from the FAERS database between the first quarter of 2009 and the second quarter of 2024. The presence of a significant association between Ilaris and AEs was assessed by using disproportionality analyses including ROR,PRR,BCPNN,MGPS.
RESULTS: After evalu

The appendix is a small, worm-like diverticulum of the caecum, potentially having a role in regulating intestinal microbiota and immunology. Inflammation of the appendix, acute appendicitis, is one of the most common reasons for acute abdominal pain in children and adults and surgical emergency visits worldwide. The pathophysiology of appendicitis is still poorly understood. During the past decade, evidence has overturned the long-lasting dogma that all appendicitis cases have a clinical course inevitably progressing to perforation and life-threatening peritonitis unless operated upon in a tim

BACKGROUND: Perforation is one of the rarest effects of Meckel's diverticulum and may clinically resemble acute appendicitis.
CASE REPORT: A 34-year-old woman with pain in the right iliac fossa, nausea, and vomiting for three days was brought to the emergency department. An abdominal examination indicated rebound tenderness in the area of the right iliac fossa. Abdominal ultrasound showed a heterogeneous lesion in the left iliac fossa measuring 5 cm × 3.5 cm × 4 cm with no internal vascularity. Abdominal Computed Tomography (CT) demonstrated a hypodense lesion located left of the midline of t
