The data on 80 cases of ovarian dysgerminoma are presented. The average age of patients was 19.1. In 9 out of 18 menstruation--free patients dysgerminoma was associated with genital infantilism and intersexuality. Pain was the most frequent symptom (70%). In 82%, correct diagnosis was established during primary examination. Among the most frequent misdiagnoses were acute appendicitis or pregnancy. Stage I tumor was established in nearly 70%. Unilateral involvement was registered in 83.5% of cases. Metastatic spread was limited to peritoneal cavity in 19.2%, paraaortic lymph nodes were involved

Cefminox sodium (CMNX, MT-141), a new semisynthetic cephamycin, having marked resistance to beta-lactamase, and a broad spectrum of antibacterial activity against various bacterial species, including Haemophilus influenzae, Serratia marcescens and Citrobacter freundii, CMNX has higher activity in vivo than in vitro. For therapeutic purpose, CMNX was given in a daily dose of 0.5 g (0.5 g X 1) to 2 g (1 X 2) by intravenous drip infusion for 4 to 8 days to 24 cases with acute peritonitis (17 cases with acute appendicitis, 1 with localized peritonitis after gastrectomy, 1 with diffuse peritonitis

Cefotiam dihydrochloride (CTM) in a dose of 2 g was given by intravenous bolus injection to 15 patients operated upon for acute or subacute abdominal organs. They were included to 5 cases of acute localized peritonitis due to perforative appendicitis, 3 of diffuse peritonitis due to perforative duodenal ulcer, 1 of diffuse peritonitis with intestinal obstruction, 1 of perforative sigmoid colon cancer, 2 of gastric cancer or polyp with cholelithiasis, and 3 of cholangitis with cholecyst-choledocholithiasis. The materials of exudate from drain were taken at intervals by sterilized paper disc and

Uncomplicated amebic colitis is readily treated and has a mortality rate of less than 0.5%. Complications necessitating surgical intervention develop in only 6% to 11% of patients with symptomatic disease. However, the mortality rate in these patients ranges from 40% to 100% and stems in part from delays in diagnosis and treatment. Patients with known amebic colitis who show signs of systemic toxicity or of localized or generalized peritonitis are at high risk for complications; surgical consultation should be obtained. Patients who are thought to have acute appendicitis, diverticulitis, or ob

The principal complication of continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) is peritonitis in most cases benign and treated effectively by local, specific antibiotic therapy. In some cases, however, the infection fails to respond to medical treatment and surgical exploration occasionally reveals serious lesions such as sclerosing peritonitis or an intestinal perforation. Prognosis is dependent not only on the extent and severity of the lesion but also on the rapidity of operative intervention. The development of an appendicitis, often masked by early antibiotic therapy, represents a particu

It has higher activity in vivo than in vitro. As therapy, FOM-Na in a daily dose of 4 g (2 g X 2) was given by intravenous drip infusion for 5 to 10 days to 6 cases with infectious diseases (2 cases of acute cholecystitis, 3 cases of acute localized peritonitis due to phlegmonous appendicitis and 1 case of acute diffuse peritonitis due to perforative appendicitis). The clinical response was rated as "excellent

An analysis of 280 clinical observations of acute appendicitis complicated by local noncircumscribed peritonitis was performed. It was shown that the pathology was characterized by more acute clinical course, later time of operative interventions, greater amount of postoperative complications and longer staying at the hospital. In the treatment of appendicitis complicated by local peritonitis main attention must be given to sanitation of the abdominal cavity and complex postoperative management after appendectomy.

An analysis of clinico-roentgenological data of 74 patients has been made. The patients were operated upon for acute appendicitis (43) and cholecystitis (31) and their postoperative period was complicated by local peritonitis. The importance of indirect and roentgenological symptoms for diagnosis of abscesses in the abdominal cavity is stressed.

Twenty-three surgeons at three McGill University hospitals were interviewed about their treatment of intra-abdominal sepsis. They described their use of antibiotics, operative practices and other treatment of generalized peritonitis and intra-abdominal abscesses. If more than 75% of respondents used a given method, its use was considered "uniform" unless substantial interhospital variation existed for that method. Treatment was variable in 18 situations. Only four of these involved systemic antibiotic use--drug regimens in appendicitis and intra-abdominal abscess, and duration of antibiotic th

Acute cholecystitis is a non-rare disease, the incidence of which was increasing in the last years parallel to biliary lithiasis, which in 90% of cases is the first cause of such pathology. From the anatomopathological standpoint, we distinguish three types of acute cholecystitis: catarrhal, suppurative and gangrenous. The most frequently remarked symptom is ache at right hypochondrium. Only in 30% of cases cholecyst can be palpated, in form of ovoid mass; typical is the positiveness of Murphy's manoeuvre; constant is fever, but not subicterus. The introduction of new methods of ascertainment,

In this study, we reviewed 204 cases of acute appendicitis out of 248 appendectomies. They were classified into three groups: acute appendicitis, localized peritonitis and generalized peritonitis. The morbidity is analyzed according to an eventual peritoneal drainage.

Four cases are reported, in whom radiologically opaque appendiceal coproliths (appendicoliths) were recognised on plain abdominal radiographs. These were undertaken for diagnostic purposes, in patients with right-sided abdominal pain, in whom the diagnosis was not immediately apparent. The pathology, radiological features, and clinical significance of the phenomenon are discussed, and the association of appendicoliths with appendiceal perforation and gangrene is stressed. The fact that clinical signs and symptoms of acute appendicitis are often misleading and sometimes minimal, even in the pre

Intraabdominal sepsis most frequently follows penetrating or blunt abdominal trauma or perforated appendicitis or diverticulitis. The initial escape of the endogenous gastrointestinal microflora into the peritoneal cavity results in peritonitis and secondary septicemia, which is frequently followed by localized intraabdominal abscesses. These infections are most frequently polymicrobial and relate directly to the unique endogenous microflora at the various levels of the gastrointestinal tract. The treatment of intraabdominal sepsis is primarily centered around prompt, appropriate surgical inte

Gangrenous and perforated appendicitis was reviewed in 300 pediatric patients. Those with only gangrene generally had a benign course regardless of whether antibiotic therapy was used. However, patients with local perforation or generalized peritonitis had a high incidence of infective complications if they were not treated with antibiotics. Children treated with ampicillin, gentamicin, and clindamycin had markedly fewer wound infections and abscesses and were able to tolerate a diet and go home sooner than those receiving ampicillin and/or gentamicin.

An open study was carried out on patients with acute appendicitis to assess the effectiveness of taurolin, a new antiseptic which destroys both bacteria and endotoxin, when used intraperitoneally in cases of purulent peritonitis associated with perforated or gangrenous appendicitis. Seventy-four out of 319 patients received taurolin; the others were treated by operation only or by operation and antibiotics as required. The results suggest that taurolin was effective as monotherapy in peritonitis and endotoxic shock and its use avoids the problems associated with antibiotics.
