OBJECTIVE: To formulate strategies for clinical assessments for endometrial thickening on ultrasound in a postmenopausal woman without bleeding.
TARGET POPULATION: Postmenopausal women of any age.
OUTCOMES: To reduce unnecessary invasive interventions and investigations in women with asymptomatic endometrial thickening while selectively investigating women at risk for endometrial cancer.
BENEFITS, HARMS, AND COSTS: It is anticipated that the adoption of these recommendations would save postmenopausal women unnecessary anxiety, pain, and risk of procedural complications. It is also expected

Appendicitis is a common surgical emergency marked by inflammation of the appendix, often due to blockage of the appendix lumen by fecoliths, lymphoid hyperplasia, or neoplasms. While various causes are known, appendicitis triggered by a foreign body (FB) is exceptionally rare. This case report highlights a rare presentation of appendicitis in a 32-year-old male with no significant medical history, who presented with acute lower right abdominal pain, fever, and vomiting. Initial evaluation suggested appendicitis, further supported by laboratory findings and diagnostic imaging revealing a retro

Several neoplastic and non-neoplastic proliferations of the appendix can show varying degrees of serrated epithelial architecture. Of these, diffuse mucosal hyperplasia is most common, followed in frequency by low-grade mucinous and serrated neoplasms. It is important to distinguish serrated appendiceal neoplasms from their potential mimics because these entities may be managed differently. Diffuse mucosal hyperplasia is a non-neoplastic change that usually develops in the setting of resolving appendicitis and requires no further therapy or surveillance, and serrated neoplasms confined to the

Acute appendicitis is a common surgical emergency. It is commonly caused by obstruction of the appendiceal lumen due to fecaliths, tumors, or lymphoid hyperplasia. For over a century, appendectomy has been the primary treatment for acute appendicitis. Abraham Groves performed the first open appendectomy in 1883. In 1983, Kurt Semm completed the first laparoscopic appendectomy, heralding a new era in appendectomy. However, appendectomy is associated with certain complications and a rate of negative appendectomies. Studies have suggested controversy over the impact of appendectomy on the develop

Acute appendicitis is an ordinary surgical emergency, typically attributed to luminal obstruction by fecaliths or lymphoid hyperplasia. However, ingested foreign bodies as an etiology are rare but increasingly recognized, particularly in pediatric patients. We present the case of a 9-year-old male patient who presented to the emergency department with symptoms consistent with acute appendicitis. Further investigation revealed the presence of a bone fragment within the appendix, leading to acute inflammation. Foreign body ingestion should be considered in pediatric patients with acute appendici

Enterobius vermicularis is a common parasitic infection worldwide. Acute appendicitis (AA) is a frequently encountered condition in general surgery; however, its association with E. vermicularis remains controversial. AA caused by E. vermicularis is a relatively uncommon infection that primarily affects children. We reported a 21-year-old female who was admitted to our hospital due to right lower quadrant abdominal tenderness. Laboratory tests and imaging were not consistent with AA. She underwent a diagnostic laparoscopy and appendectomy. Histopathological examinations revealed the presence o

INTRODUCTION: Appendiceal endometriosis (AE) is a rare condition, with a prevalence ranging from 0.05 % to 1.7 % in patients with endometriosis. It represents <1 % of cases of acute appendicitis (AA).
CASES PRESENTATION: We present two cases of AA where the histological cause was endometriosis. Both cases involved patients around 40 years old who presented with abdominal pain in the right iliac fossa. AA was diagnosed through abdominal computed tomography (CT), which in the first case showed acute appendicitis, successfully treated with laparoscopic appendectomy. In the second case, the CT sh

A 54-year-old woman was referred to our hospital because of abnormal colonoscopic findings, including a submucosal protuberance at the appendiceal root. A biopsy showed no malignant findings. Computed tomography revealed a 20-mm cystic lesion with thick walls at the appendiceal root, suggestive of an appendiceal mucocele. Laparoscopic ileocecal resection was performed based on the preoperative diagnosis of a suspected mucinous appendiceal neoplasm. The resected specimen showed a closed appendiceal orifice surrounded by a mucus-containing submucosal tumor. Histopathologically, the appendiceal e

INTRODUCTION: Surgical instrument retention continues to occur despite considerable preventive efforts. The resulting infection can be asymptomatic or demonstrate variable clinical presentations, such as intestinal obstruction, malnutrition, gastrointestinal bleeding, peritonitis, adhesions, fistulas, abscesses, erosion and/or intestinal perforation. In this case report, we present a patient whose last surgical event occurred 22 years prior with appendicular symptoms and a palpable abdominal mass.

BACKGROUND: Acute appendicitis is a common surgical emergency that causes acute abdominal pain and affects approximately 7-8% of the population during their lifetime. The closure of the appendix stump during laparoscopic appendectomy is one of the most critical steps of the surgery to prevent life-threatening complications such as postoperative fistula, peritonitis, and sepsis. The mate-rial chosen for appendix stump closure must be effective, safe, and economical. However, there is still no consensus on the optimal method for stump closure. In this study, we aimed to compare the advantages an

Enteroenteric fistula in the pediatric age group is an unusual presentation. It can create a diagnostic dilemma for the physician, particularly in the absence of any previous surgery, prolonged abdominal symptoms, or inflammatory bowel disease. The patient is a 10-year-old girl who presented with mild-grade fever, abdominal distension, scanty stool passage, and foul-smelling vomiting for the past 10 days. Before this, the patient had received treatment for 20 days for her fever and diarrhea from a quack, and her symptoms had improved. There was no history of prolonged fever, chronic diarrhea,

Globally, acute appendicitis has an estimated lifetime risk of 7-8%. However, there are numerous controversies surrounding the management of acute appendicitis, and the best treatment approach depends on patient characteristics. Non-operative management (NOM), which involves the utilization of antibiotics and aggressive intravenous hydration, and surgical appendectomy are valid treatment options for healthy adults. NOM is also ideal for poor surgical candidates. Another important consideration is the timing of surgery, i.e., the role of interval appendectomy (IA) and the possibility of delayin

Diverticulitis in a solitary transverse colon diverticulum is uncommon, with only a handful of cases documented in the literature. There are various clinical manifestations of the disease, which make clinical and radiological diagnosis rather challenging. Herein, we present a case of a premenopausal female patient in her late 40s who presented to the emergency department, complaining of right lower quadrant abdominal pain, nausea, anorexia and fever. Following clinical, biochemical and radiological tests, the patient was prepared for surgical operation, with the presumed diagnosis of acute app

Meckel's diverticulum (MD) is the most common congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract. Torsion is a rare complication of MD with only 48 cases described in the English literature to date. We describe a case of a 22-year-old male who presented to the emergency department with lower abdominal pain. Pre-operative computed tomography scan suggested a torted MD. This was confirmed on diagnostic laparoscopy and managed with segmental resection of the MD and a concurrent appendicectomy. Histopathology confirmed torsion of MD and a normal appendix. The patient recovered well without any compl

Meckel's diverticulum, a congenital defect that affects about 2% of the population, is a remnant of the embryologic vitelline duct. Perforated Meckel's diverticulum, a rare consequence of an already rare disease process, frequently presents and is diagnosed as a perforated appendix. We report a case of a 28-year-old male who presented with a two-day history of right-sided lower abdominal pain associated with nausea. The abdominal examination revealed a soft, nondistended abdomen with tenderness in the right iliac fossa. A CT scan of the abdomen showed a normal appendix and inflammation of Meck

BACKGROUND: Primary appendiceal tumors are rare. Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasia (LAMN) and goblet cell adenocarcinoma (GCA) account for 20% and 14% of primary appendiceal tumors, respectively. The coexistence of LAMN and GCA is an extremely rare event. This report presents a case of an elderly male patient with an appendiceal tumor composed of LAMN and GCA in the same appendix.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 72-year-old male patient was admitted to our institution presenting with a history of abdominal pain localized to the right lower quadrant for two months. Abdominal computed tomography (C

Appendiceal diverticulum is a rare condition that usually presents with symptoms similar to acute appendicitis. Although imaging can be used to aid the diagnosis of this condition, it is usually confirmed postoperatively on the basis of histology. Because of an increased risk of appendiceal neoplasms, the usual management is prophylactic appendicectomy. We report the case of a 70-year-old lady with no symptoms referred from her GP surgery for a positive faecal immunochemical test as part of the bowel screening programme. Colonoscopy showed a mass at the appendiceal orifice with normal histolog

Ileocolic intussusception is a consideration in young pediatric patients with acute abdominal pain. Meckel's diverticulum is the most common pathologic lead point for intussusception in children and the appendix acting as the lead point is rare. In addition, management guidelines for recurrent ileocolic intussusception (RICI) are lacking. We present two cases of RICI in which the pathological lead point was the appendix. The first patient, a two-year-old with no medical history, had intermittent abdominal pain and non-bloody vomiting for a month. Ultrasound revealed ileocolic intussusception,

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: Perforation of Meckel's diverticulum (MD) is rare, particularly by foreign body. High index of suspicion and thorough intraoperative assessment is needed in patients undergoing surgery for acute appendicitis, specifically when appendix appears normal.
ABSTRACT: Meckel's diverticulum is the most common congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract. While often asymptomatic, it can present with several complications. Perforation due to foreign body ingestion is rare but can have severe consequences if late diagnosis occurs. A 13-year-old male, initially suspected of acu

We present a case of multiple abdominal pathologies occurring simultaneously, which emphasizes the importance of keeping a broad differential and evaluating each diagnosis. A 33-year-old female presented with abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. Her workup included computerized tomography which demonstrated acute appendicitis with concern for a closed-loop bowel obstruction. She was offered diagnostic laparoscopy with anticipation of laparoscopic appendectomy and further evaluation for the source of the bowel obstruction. At the time of surgery, a Meckel's diverticulum with acute diverticulit
