Vitamins and Cancer Risk: A Comprehensive Review of Epidemiologic and Clinical Evidence.

INTRODUCTION: Vitamin supplementation nearly is universal among patients with cancer, yet the scientific landscape is far more complex. Across decades of research, vitamins have demonstrated profound biological effects ranging from immune activation and ferroptosis modulation to paradoxical tumor promotion. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review maps the breadth of compelling and controversial evidence surrounding vitamins A, D, E, K, C, and the B-complex in cancer prevention, treatment response, and toxicity. METHODS: Guided by PRISMA-ScR domains, we synthesized mechanistic studies, epidemiologic c

Beyond the Appendix: Unveiling Florid Lymphoid Hyperplasia.

Florid lymphoid hyperplasia (FLH) is a rare entity with an unknown etiology. It may occur anywhere in the gastrointestinal tract, from the base of the tongue to the anus, but is more common at the terminal ileum and rectum. It often presents as an acute abdominal condition. Our case illustrates how FLH can closely mimic the clinical presentation of acute appendicitis. The resemblance can be so striking that it poses a significant diagnostic challenge, highlighting the importance of careful evaluation in such scenarios.

Perforated Appendicitis as a Herald of Appendiceal Adenocarcinoma: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Appendiceal adenocarcinoma is a highly uncommon gastrointestinal tumor that can have severe consequences if not identified or properly treated. These malignancies are often diagnosed incidentally after appendectomy through histopathological evaluation of the appendix. Moderate- or poorly differentiated tumors frequently warrant completion right hemicolectomy followed by adjuvant chemotherapy. We present the case of a 76-year-old male with a history of hypertension, benign prostatic hyperplasia, and seborrheic keratosis who was admitted for management of a ruptured appendix associated with an i

Case Report: Appendiceal neurofibroma associated with neurofibromatosis type 1: a rare case and systematic review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Appendiceal neurofibroma is exceedingly rare, with fewer than 20 cases reported globally to date. It is most commonly observed in patients with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), and both clinical and imaging characteristics lack specificity. CASE SUMMARY: A 31-year-old male presented with a 10-day history of fever; a right-lower-quadrant mass was detected during outpatient evaluation, prompting hospital admission. Abdominal CT revealed a 6.9 × 4.2 cm mass in the appendiceal region, and ultrasound showed the lesion was connected to the appendiceal lumen. The patient underwent appende

[Abdominal ultrasound in rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) - physiologic and important pathological findings].

ABSTRACT: Sonography is an important diagnostic tool in small mammal medicine, particularly in rabbits. Due to special anatomical characteristics in the rabbit, sonographic examination differs from that of dogs and cats. The selection of a suitable ultrasound transducer is essential - high-frequency linear transducers with a small contact surface are recommended. For the examination, the rabbit is positioned in dorsal recumbency on a soft surface; fixation of the hind limbs is usually not necessary. ABSTRACT: The examination procedure is standardized, usually beginning with the urinary bladde

Reactive lymphoid hyperplasia of the appendix in children: a descriptive analysis of accompanying neural and stromal features.

BACKGROUND: Reactive lymphoid hyperplasia (RLH) is frequently identified in pediatric appendectomy specimens performed for suspected acute appendicitis. However, its associated neural and stromal alterations remain incompletely characterized. METHODS: This retrospective descriptive study evaluated pediatric appendectomy specimens obtained between January 2019 and January 2024. RLH cases were identified based on histopathological criteria. Archived specimens were re-evaluated using hematoxylin and eosin staining, S-100 immunohistochemistry, and Masson's trichrome staining. Neural alterations w

Atypical Presentation of Acute Appendicitis in a Young Adult With Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia on Chronic Glucocorticoid Therapy.

We report the case of a 32-year-old man with congenital adrenal hyperplasia on chronic dexamethasone and fludrocortisone therapy who presented with nausea, diarrhea, and a single episode of vomiting, while denying abdominal pain, fever, anorexia, or right lower quadrant discomfort. Physical examination revealed a completely benign abdomen without tenderness, guarding, rebound, or peritoneal signs. Laboratory evaluation demonstrated hyponatremia and acute kidney injury without leukocytosis. Despite an Alvarado score of 1, CT imaging of the abdomen revealed acute appendicitis, which was later co

An Isolated Colonic Neurofibroma Without Systemic Neurofibromatosis: A Rare Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND Solitary neurofibromas of the colon are extremely rare and are most often reported in patients with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). Although usually benign, these lesions can rarely undergo malignant transformation, particularly when associated with NF1. Therefore, isolated cases merit careful evaluation and follow-up. CASE REPORT A man in his 70s with a history of benign prostatic hyperplasia presented with recurrent abdominal pain, constipation, and unintentional weight loss of 5 kg over 1 month. Physical examination revealed a firm, non-mobile mass in the right lower quadrant, wi

Superinfected appendiceal mucocele with a giant appendicolith: a rare entity in a common surgical emergency - a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Appendiceal mucocele (AM) is a rare surgical emergency, commonly caused by an appendicolith. An appendicolith larger than 2 cm is termed "giant," which is rare and carries a high risk of perforation. This case highlights the diagnostic and surgical challenges of a superinfected AM complicated by a giant appendicolith. CASE PRESENTATION: A 25-year-old woman presented to our emergency department with a 12-hour history of right lower quadrant pain, non-bilious vomiting, and fever with chills and rigor. On examination, her right iliac fossa was tender with rebound tenderness and a p

Hampi Tariki Kit: thin-layer chromatography for semiquantitative screening of solid oral medicines in Peru.

INTRODUCTION: Essential precondition for the development of cervical cancer is a persistent human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. The majority - approximately 70% - of cervical carcinomas is caused by two high-risk HPV types (16 and 18). Recently, two vaccines have been approved to the German market with the potential to induce protection against HPV 16 and HPV 18 among additional low-risk virus types. OBJECTIVES: To analyse whether HPV vaccination is effective with regard to the reduction of cervical cancer and precursors of cervical carcinoma (CIN), respectively? Does HPV vaccination repres

Identifying people's energy information needs through Energy Citizen Personas.

UNLABELLED: Renal tuberculosis (TB) is an extrapulmonary form of TB, and is becoming more common and challenging to treat. This is because many anti-tubercular drugs have nephrotoxicity and have poor drug penetration into renal tissues. These problems highlight the urgent need for safer, kidney-targeted treatment regimes, particularly in patients with compromised kidney function. Thus, this study investigates lysozyme, which is a low-molecular-weight protein and has natural kidney-affinity, as a potential carrier for targeted renal drug delivery. Here, a comprehensive in silico approach has be

CT features with histopathological correlation in inflammatory versus benign & malignant neoplastic appendiceal mucoceles: a retrospective cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Differentiation of histologic subtypes of appendiceal mucoceles may prove to be difficult on computed tomography (CT). The main objective of this study was to identify the CT features of mucocele of the appendix and correlate the imaging findings with histopathology in inflammatory, benign, and malignant neoplastic lesions, and whether these entities can be accurately differentiated on CT imaging. MATERIALS AND METHODS: CT scans of 31 patients with diagnosis of appendiceal mucocele were retrospectively reviewed and compared with histopathology. The appendix was evalua

Case report: A rare cause of acute appendicitis due to adult Ascaris lumbricoides in a 10-year-old child from Ethiopia.

INTRODUCTION: Acute appendicitis is the acute inflammation of the vermiform appendix. Several etiologic factors, including intestinal helminths, can cause it. Ascaris lumbricoides, a common intestinal worm with several manifestations, can cause acute appendicitis. CASE PRESENTATION: The case presents a 10-year-old male child with signs and symptoms of acute appendicitis which was confirmed by ultrasound. During appendectomy, adult Ascaris lumbricoides was removed from the acutely inflamed appendix and was found to be the cause of the appendicitis. About 100 mL of thin pus was also evacuated.

Unusual giant low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm: A case report and literature review.

RATIONALE: Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN) is a rare subtype of appendiceal pathology characterized by epithelial hyperplasia, cellular atypia, and mucinous accumulation within the appendiceal lumen, leading to obstructive expansion of the organ. Representing a mere 0.2% to 0.3% of all appendectomies and approximately 0.5% of gastrointestinal tumors, LAMN poses diagnostic challenges in surgical practice. PATIENT CONCERNS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of a patient with the appendiceal neoplasm. A 39-year-old female presented to Jiaozhou Hospital, East Hospital Affiliate

Latent Non-typhoidal Salmonella in Macrophages as a Potential Cause of Persistent Appendicitis.

Non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS) infection typically causes gastroenteritis but can sometimes lead to persistent or recurrent abdominal pain due to mesenteric lymphadenitis. Here, we present a rare case of a 10-year-old Japanese boy who experienced persistent abdominal pain caused by appendicitis in addition to mesenteric lymphadenitis due to NTS. Initially, he exhibited symptoms of gastroenteritis, including transient fever, persistent lower abdominal pain, and loose stools. Stool cultures revealed Salmonella O7, leading to treatment with fosfomycin. However, his abdominal pain persisted and wa

A Case of Acute Appendicitis With Mucocele, Serrated Adenoma, and Enterobius vermicularis as Underlying Etiologies.

A 58-year-old male presented to the emergency department with a clinical picture compatible with an appendicular abscess, which was resolved with parenteral antibiotics. A colonoscopy showed mucus protruding through the appendicular lumen, compatible with the appendicular mucocele. A laparoscopic appendectomy was performed. Histology revealed serrated adenoma, luminal Enterobius vermicularis, lymphoid hyperplasia, and features of chronic and acute inflammation of the appendix. This case is unique, as all these features, i.e., mucocele, serrated adenoma, and Enterobius vermicularis, are simultan

An Infant Autopsy Case of Acute Appendicitis with Lymphoid Hyperplasia.

Acute appendicitis is a common cause of acute abdominal pain but is rare in infants because of anatomical and physiological characteristics that reduce the risk of the luminal obstruction of the appendix. However, when it occurs in infants, it is often difficult to diagnose clinically and may progress rapidly to a fatal outcome. We report a forensic autopsy case of an 11-month-old infant who died 2 d after developing fever and decreased oral intake, without antemortem diagnosis. Autopsy revealed fibrinous ascitic fluid and an edematous, dark-red appendix with fibrin deposits, but no macroscopi

Neuroendocrine tumors in patients with inflammatory bowel disease: a case series.

PURPOSE: The incidence of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) and gastro-entero-pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (GEP-NETs) has increased, but their potential association remains unclear. Chronic inflammation in IBD may contribute to enteroendocrine cell hyperplasia and neoplasia, though evidence for a causal link is limited. This case series describes the characteristics and outcomes of patients with coexisting IBD and GEP-NETs at a tertiary referral center. METHODS: Retrospective case series including all consecutive IBD patients who were referred to the IBD Unit at the IRCCS Humanitas Resear
