NTP toxicity report of reproductive dose range-finding study of Genistein (CAS No. 446-72-0) administered in feed to Sprague-Dawley rats.

Genistein is a naturally occurring isoflavone that interacts with estrogen receptors and multiple other molecular targets. Human exposure to genistein is predominantly through consumption of soy products, including soy-based infant formula and dietary supplements. A series of short-term studies with genistein was conducted with two goals: 1) to obtain data necessary to establish dose levels for subsequent multigeneration reproductive and chronic toxicity studies and 2) to evaluate the effects of genistein on endpoints outside the reproductive tract. The data generated from these studies have b

[Comparative study of appendical mucocela and pseudomyxoma peritonei. About 25 cases].

AIM: to study the clinicopathological features of the different types of appendical mucocele and to compare them with those of pseudomyxoma peritonei. METHODS: 25 cases of appendical mucocele were operated in the Cap-Bon region in Tunisia during a period of 13 years from 1994 to 2006. RESULTS: 9 retentionnal cysts, 13 mucinous cystadenomas, one serrated adenoma, one hyperplasia of the mucosa and one cystadenocarcinoma were diagnosed. Five cystadenomas as well as the only case of cystadenocarcinoma were associated with pseudomyxoma peritonei. Pseudomyxoma peritonei occurred 20 years later tha

Mucinous cystadenoma of the appendix associated with adenocarcinoma of the sigmoid colon and hepatocellular carcinoma of the liver: report of a case.

Mucinous cystadenoma of the appendix is a rare condition and represents one of the three entities with the common name mucocele of the appendix. It is characterized by a cystic dilatation of the lumen with stasis of mucus inside it. Histopathologically mucocele is divided into three groups: focal or diffuse mucosal hyperplasia, mucinous cystadenoma and mucinous cystadenocarcinoma. This condition is often associated with other neoplasia, especially adenocarcinoma of the colon and ovaries. We here describe a 57 year old male patient who presented with abdominal discomfort, constipation, fresh bl

[Post-traumatic acute appendicitis. A case report].

Acute appendicitis is a frequent abdominal pathology, more frequent in the childhood. The pathophysiology of acute appendicitis is obstruction of the appendix lumen and distension due to continued mucosal secretion. The second step is a rapid multiplication of resident bacteria, excretion of toxine and wall inflammation. Causes of this processes are different: in most of cases there is an hyperplasia of intrinsic lymphoid tissue (60%) or hard stool. Another cause may be foreign body. But is there a relationship between abdominal trauma and appendicitis?

Elective laparoscopic appendicectomy for chronic right iliac fossa pain in children.

AIM: To determine whether elective laparoscopic appendicectomy is justified for chronic right iliac fossa (RIF) pain of undetermined origin. METHODS: A retrospective audit of all laparoscopic appendicectomies between January 1997 and August 2003 was performed. The expanded medical audit system (EMAS) and a Microsoft Access database of operative records were used to identify patients with chronic RIF pain subjected to elective appendicectomy. Case notes were retrieved and analysed for patient profile, duration of symptoms including clinic visits and admissions, operative findings, histological

[Appendiceal mucinous cystadenoma].

BACKGROUND: Appendiceal neoplasms are rare. Patients may present with clinical symptoms suggestive of "acute appendicitis" or other unspecific abdominal complaints. An appendiceal mucinous neoplasia is sometimes diagnosed during a laparotomy performed on another indication. Frequently, the condition remains undiagnosed until the pathologists' examination. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We present the case of a 49-year-old woman who presented with symptoms suggestive of acute appendicitis. An appendectomy was performed. The appendectomy specimen revealed a mucinous cystadenoma with a diverticulum in t

A case of blunt abdominal trauma and posttraumatic acute appendicitis.

Acute appendicitis and blunt abdominal trauma are common surgical emergencies. Whether there is a causative relationship between these two entities has long been a subject of debate. A twenty-one-year-old male Japanese tourist presented with vague abdominal pain and dysuria that began after he had been beaten and robbed. No signs of trauma were detected on physical examination; however, there were diffuse abdominal sensitivity with maximal tenderness in the hypogastrium and rebound tenderness in the right lower quadrant. Upon no improvement with medications within 24 hours, laparotomy was perf

[Giant retroperitoneal cystic mass: appendiceal mucocele].

Appendiceal mucocele is a term used to describe the dilatation of the vermiform appendix produced by an intraluminal accumulation of mucus. Four pathological processes have been described that may lead to an appendiceal mucocele: obturation of cecoappendiceal communication, mucosal hyperplasia, mucinous cystadenoma and mucinous cystoadenocarcinoma. The most frequent is mucinous cystadenoma, seen in 50% of appendiceal mucoceles. 6% of patients with appendiceal mucocele develop peritoneal pseudomixoma, possibly through dissemination of the epithelial cells into the abdominal cavity. Preoperative

Atypical marginal zone hyperplasia of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue: a reactive condition of childhood showing immunoglobulin lambda light-chain restriction.

Mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphomas usually arise at sites of acquired MALT and are uncommon in native MALT (eg, Peyer patches and tonsil). Malignancy in these low-grade lymphomas is often inferred by immunoglobulin light-chain restriction and expression of CD43; molecular genetic evidence is sought only if these are in doubt. We report 6 cases (4 tonsils, 2 appendixes) of marginal zone (MZ) hyperplasia in children aged 3 to 11 years that, despite histologic and immunophenotypic features indicative of lymphoma, were polyclonal by molecular analysis. No lymphoma-directed therapy

Serrated adenomas of the appendix.

AIMS: A review of the literature indicated that only one case of serrated adenoma of the appendix has been recorded. The aim was to explore the possible occurrence of serrated adenomas of the appendix at the department of pathology, Karolinska Institute and University Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden. METHODS: Between January 1993 and December 2003, 38 non-carcinoid, non-neoplastic, or neoplastic polyps or tumours of the appendix were surgically removed at this hospital. All filed histological sections (haematoxylin and eosin stained) were reviewed. RESULTS: Of the 38 lesions, four were hyperplas

Urinary 5-hydroxy indole acetic acid as a test for early diagnosis of acute appendicitis.

OBJECTIVES: Acute appendicitis (AA) is the most common abdominal emergency. The appendix has abundant serotonin containing cells. Upon inflammation, serotonin is released in the blood and converted into 5-HIAA (5-hydroxy indole acetic acid). Measurement of the urine 5-HIAA (U-5-HIAA) could be a reliable marker of inflammation of the appendix. We have compared the powers of test performance of spot U-5-HIAA and spot U-5-HIAA/creatinin with other routine laboratory tests used for the diagnosis of acute appendicitis. DESIGN AND METHODS: Urine, serum, and blood samples of 110 patients who were ad

[Appendiceal mucocele].

Appendiceal mucocele is a rare condition encountered it only 0.07-0.4% of all appendectomies. The male to female ratio is 1:4 and an average age at the time of diagnosis is over 50 years. Mucocele of the appendix is defined as appendiceal obstruction leading to lumen distension with accumulation of mucoid material. The disease ranges from benign forms to malignant cystadenocarcinoma. The cause of the obstruction may be classified based on histology into four groups. These groups include simple mucocele, mucosal hyperplasia, cystadenoma, and cystadenocarcinoma. Abdominal ultrasound and CT scan

Pediatric follicular lymphomas, marginal zone lymphomas, and marginal zone hyperplasia.

Whereas most B-cell lymphomas in children are of diffuse large B-cell or Burkitt type, other B-cell lymphomas, including follicular and marginal zone B-cell lymphomas, rarely occur Pediatric follicular lymphomas (FLs) have many features indistinguishable from those seen in adults but demonstrate an increased proportion that are localized, lack bcl-2 protein expression, lack bcl-2 translocations, and are grade 3 but still indolent. They also tend to have large expansile follicles. Although usually at nodal or tonsillar sites, other extranodal involvement also occurs, with FL of the testis well

Primary epithelial neoplasms and other epithelial lesions of the appendix (excluding carcinoid tumors).

Epithelial tumors of the appendix range from low-grade mucosal-based tumors which, when confined to the appendix, have an excellent prognosis but, once outside the appendix, have a fair prognosis and often a prolonged disease course, to high grade invasive carcinomas that are rapidly fatal. Low grade mucinous neoplasms may rupture and spread to the peritoneum as pseudomyxoma peritonei, and the nomenclature of these tumors has been the subject of considerable disagreement among pathologists; the designation "low grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm" has recently been proposed for reasons discuss

[Mucus secreting tumors of the appendix. Report of 22 cases].

The retrospective study presented in this article was realized on a series of 22 cases of mucus secreting tumor of the appendix compiled among 8373 appendicectomies. The clinical picture was dominated by an appendiceal syndrome (73%). The diagnosis was made pre or peroperatively in 10 cases and it was only with to the systematic anatomopathologic exam that 12 other cases were discovered. The histological study of the appendectomy piece showed a retention mucocele (12 cases), a mucosal hyperplasia (8 cases) and a cystadenoma (2 cases). For 5 patients, the diagnosis of peritoneal pseudomyxoma (4

The African cherry (Prunus africana): can lessons be learned from an over-exploited medicinal tree?

For the last 35 years, the African cherry (Prunus africana (Hook. f.) Kalm.) has been used in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia and other disorders. The bark, from which the treatment is derived, is entirely wild-collected. The major exporters of bark include Cameroon, Madagascar, Equatorial Guinea, and Kenya. Groupe Fournier of France and Indena of Italy produce 86% of the world's bark extract, both for their own products and for the free market. Worldwide exports of dried bark in 2000 have been estimated at 1350-1525 metric tons per year, down from its peak of 3225 tons in 1997.
