Mucocele of the vermiform appendix was the term formerly used to describe all mucin-secreting lesions of the appendix. As endocrine tumours in a number of organs may arise in a background of hyperplasia, the density of endocrine cells in appendices from ten patients with carcinoid tumours was compared with that in appendices from ten age- and sex-matched control patients. A case of solitary appendicular neurofibromatosis is presented. The neurogenous nature of the lesion was emphasized by the positive reaction for S-100 protein. Attention is directed towards the morphological differences between neurogenous hyperplasia, which is a reactive common place feature in the elderly, and the present example of neoplastic nerve growth, which produced a gigantic appendix. A review of the literature failed to disclose any previous case unassociated with von Recklinghausen's disease.

A case of a huge, self-contained cyst of pseudomyxoma peritonei arising from the rupture of a benign cystadenoma of the appendix is reported. Curative surgical removal involved both small bowel and right colon resection. The pathologic spectrum of the appendiceal mucoceles, from mucosal hyperplasia to benign cystadenoma and malignant cystadenocarcinoma, is presented. The variants of pseudomyxoma peritonei (benign-malignant, localized-diffuse) are discussed and correlated with the appendiceal lesions. The relationship between Enterobius vermicularis and acute appendicitis has been discussed for more than 80 years. The latest histological examinations show that the parasites do invade the wall of the vermiform appendix, and related to these are inflammatory reactions. This invasion causes the symptoms that lead to appendectomy. A case report of a patient with symptoms of acute appendicitis and a histological finding of intramural parasites is presented.
