Pathogenesis studies of experimentally produced sheep-associated malignant catarrhal fever (MCF) in laboratory rabbits are described. Animals were examined at intervals after inoculation. The principal change was a proliferation of lymphoid cells which began as soon as three days and became quite pronounced by 13 days after inoculation. The appendix, mesenteric lymph node and spleen were most obviously affected. We report the case of a 13-year-old girl who presented mixed polyposis coli and gastric polyps. The rectal and colonic polyps were of the adenomatous and hamartomatous type (i. e. juvenile and Peutz-Jeghers polyps) without any intermediate features; in the stomach, the polyps were of the hyperplastic type. Over a period of 3 months, 3 patients were operated on for subacute enterocolitis. The first case was a 3 years old boy with a transverse colonic perforation near the right angle and gross lymphadenopathy. The second case was a 21 years old man who had subacute terminal ileitis. An analysis was made of 3003 appendices seen in a ten-year period (1969-1978) in the Dunedin Hospital Surgical Pathology Laboratory. Acute appendicitis was found to be a disease of the young, with 1385 (80%) cases out of 1711 occurring in patients less than 30 years of age. Faecaliths and lymphoid hyperplasia were found only in a very small percentage of acute appendicitis cases, and this lends further support to the hypothesis that acute appendicitis is a disease of western culture where the diet is low in cellulose. Seventy-four patients with 75 examples of granular cell tumors occurring in the gastrointestinal tract and perianal region were studied. Twenty-four were located in the esophagus, eight in the stomach, three in the small bowel, four in the appendix, twenty in the large bowel, and sixteen in the perianal region. Depending on their behaviour under silver impregnation, they are divided into three subgroups: the mucoargentaffine, the mucoargyrophilic and the mucoargyrophobic cells. A case of benign lymphoid polyp (localized lymphoid hyperplasia) manifesting as a sessile polypoid lesion in the tip of the cecum is described. Solitary lymphoid polyps are extremely rare in the proximal part of the large bowel. The polyp was located at the base of the appendix, and microscopically both the polypoid lesion and the appendix revealed lymphoid hyperplasia.

A 28-year review of the records at Hines V.A. Medical Center revealed 17 primary epithelial tumors of the appendix. Five of these tumors were benign and 12 malignant. An eleven-year old girl's case of an inflammatory process of the right lower abdomen is described, with a positive agglutination reaction to "Y. pseudotuberculosis", serotype I-A. The surgical operation disclosed a normal coecal appendix as well as a mass of clustered ganglionar adenopathies, exclusively located in the ileo-coecal junction. Twelve children with abdominal complaints had lymphoid hyperplasia of the bowel presenting in an acute or chronic form. The etiology is obscure. An infectious process is thought to precipitate the acute form of the disease. Parasites were identified in two patients with the chronic disease.
