Acute Perforated Appendicitis Associated with Appendiceal Diverticulitis in a Young Man: A Case Report with Literature Review.

BACKGROUND Diverticulosis of the vermiform appendix is rare. In patients who present with appendicitis, appendiceal diverticulitis as a cause due is also rare. We report the case of a 35-year-old man who presented with typical symptoms and signs of acute appendicitis, which was confirmed by histopathology to be due to perforated acute appendiceal diverticulitis. CASE REPORT A 35-year-old man presented to our Emergency Department with a 1-day history of right lower-quadrant abdominal pain that radiated to the left lower quadrant, which was associated with fever, vomiting, and abdominal distenti

Peritonealized urachal remnant and obstructive congenital peritoneal band. A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Intestinal obstruction as a result of congenital peritoneal bands is rare in surgical practice. It typically compromises the small bowel, and it also has been reported to involve the appendix or a Meckel's diverticulum. However, peritonealized urachal remnant as part of a congenital band is highly infrequent. CASE REPORT: 5-year-old boy presenting with intestinal obstruction related to a peritoneal band from the mesentery to the appendix and a peritonealized urachal remnant, associated with an incidental finding of a Meckel's diverticulum. Diagnosis was achieved laparoscopically

Meckel's diverticulum abscess in the elderly population: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: and importance: Meckel's Diverticulum (MD) is the most usual congenital anatomic abnormality of the gastrointestinal tract. It is present in almost 2% of the population and it rarely becomes symptomatic in adults. Herein, we report a rare case of an elderly woman with MD, its diagnostic algorithm and treatment, pointing out the significance of this pathology in the differential diagnosis of right lower quadrant pain. CASE PRESENTATION: A 75-year-old woman presented in the emergency department due to sudden right lower quadrant abdominal pain and fever. After a comprehensive clin

Complicated appendicular diverticulitis.

Appendiceal diverticulitis, a frequently underdiagnosed entity, differs from typical appendicitis by the presence of an inflamed appendiceal diverticulum. Appendiceal diverticulitis is a surgical emergency which has an increased risk of perforation compared to typical appendicitis. We will discuss a surgically and pathologically confirmed case of complicated appendiceal diverticulitis and its management implications.

Appendix diverticulosis in a patient diagnosed on pathology after laparoscopic appendectomy for appendicular mucinous mass-case report and literature review.

Diverticulum of the appendix is uncommon cause of right iliac fossa pain and inflammation with delayed diagnosis and high risk of complications, as it mimics acute appendicitis. Here we present a case of an elderly male patient who had lung cancer post-treatment. During the follow-up, appendicle lesion was discovered and suspected to be mucinous appendix. The pathology reported after appendectomy as appendicular diverticulosis without evidence of malignancy. As appendicular diverticulum is best confirmed by pathology, still its clinical presentation is difficult to be distinguished from other

A case of diverticulum of the appendiceal base resembling a submucosal tumor of the cecum under colonoscopy: a hitherto undescribed lesion.

BACKGROUND: Diverticulosis of the appendix is an uncommon clinical entity, and a preoperative diagnosis is often difficult. Herein we report an unusual case of appendiceal diverticulosis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 72-year-old male was referred to our hospital to examine the cause of hematochezia. A colonoscopy study showed a protruding lesion resembling a submucosal tumor (SMT), approximately 20 mm in diameter, at the site around the appendiceal orifice of the cecum. An abdominal computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showed a cystic lesion at the appendiceal base. The lesion was clini

A rare triad of appendiceal diverticula, appendiceal carcinoid, and colonic diverticula.

Appendiceal diverticulosis is a rare finding associated with appendiceal neoplasms. Both can masquerade as appendicitis in patients and are overlooked in differentials of right upper quadrant pain. A 37-year-old African American female presented with appendicitis-like symptoms to the emergency room with fever and leukocytosis. Appendectomy was performed with pathological evaluation revealing coexisting appendiceal diverticula and carcinoid of the appendix with lymphovascular invasion and mesoappendiceal involvement. In line with the National Comprehensive Cancer Network guidelines, right hemic

A rare case of appendiceal tip complete attachment to a sigmoid diverticulum: An appendiceal phlegmon case report.

INTRODUCTION: Appendiceal phlegmon is defined as an inflammatory mass, consisting of the inflamed appendix, enclosed by adjacent viscera and the greater omentum in 2 % to 10 % of patients with acute appendicitis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 24-year-old female presented to the hospital with chief complaints of fever, nausea, vomiting, and pain over the right lower quadrant of the abdomen for two days. In the local examination, tenderness and rebound tenderness were detected. Ultrasonography and abdominal CT scan indicated appendiceal phlegmon. After seven weeks of receiving a course of antibiotics wi

Staging of appendiceal mucinous neoplasms: challenges and recent updates.

Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms are unique tumors of the appendix, characterized by low-grade mucinous epithelium with villiform, undulating, or flat architecture. These tumors lack infiltrative growth or destructive invasion, but can extend into the appendiceal wall by a "pushing" pattern of invasion, with a broad front that can mimic a diverticulum. These neoplasms have a propensity for peritoneal dissemination, resulting in the clinical presentation of pseudomyxoma peritonei. The pathologic staging of these neoplasms is challenging and fraught with confusing terminology and numerou

A Case of a Rare, Incidental Discovery of Fibrous Obliteration of an Appendiceal Diverticulum.

Diverticulosis of the appendix (DA) is rare and frequently found incidentally. Some cases are discovered after presenting with similar symptomatology to acute appendicitis, whereas other cases may be completely silent. Fibrous obliteration (FO) is a histologic finding indicative of cellular proliferation secondary to relapses of subclinical inflammatory processes. We report a case of a 75-year-old female with a history of chronic, intermittent abdominal pains who presented to the general surgery clinic after an abnormal thickening of the appendix was discovered on abdominal and pelvic computed

Endoscopic full thickness resection in the colo-rectum: outcomes from the UK Registry.

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic full-thickness resection (eFTR) of the colon using the full-thickness resection device (FTRD) is a novel method for removing lesions involving, or tethered to, deeper layers of the colonic wall. The UK FTRD Registry collected data from multiple centres performing this procedure. We describe the technical feasibility, safety and early outcomes of this technique in the UK. METHODS: Data were collected and analysed on 68 patients who underwent eFTR at 11 UK centres from April 2015 to June 2019. Outcome measures were technical success, procedural time, specimen size, R0 res

Mucosal prolapse syndrome-like inflammatory polyp protruding from the appendiceal orifice masquerading as an appendiceal neoplasm: A rare case report.

We describe a case of a mucosal prolapse syndrome (MPS)-like inflammatory polyp protruding from the appendiceal orifice, mimicking an appendiceal neoplasm. A 48-year-old man presented with lower abdominal pain and elevated white blood cell count and C-reactive protein level. Computed tomography showed a swollen appendix with multiple small saccular lesions and periappendiceal fat stranding and small saccular lesions in the ascending colon and cecum. Ultrasonography showed a swollen appendix 25 mm in diameter with multiple saccular structures and a periappendiceal high-echoic area, suggesting a

A case report of inverted Meckel's diverticulum.

Inverted Meckel's diverticulum is an entity often discovered incidentally or through a clinical evaluation for gastrointestinal bleeding. While rare, inverted Meckel's diverticulum should be considered in the evaluation of a patient presenting with gastrointestinal bleeding, intestinal obstruction, or intussusception. In this case, a 67-year-old female with a remote history of surgically treated breast cancer presents to an urgent care facility with weakness and fatigue. She was found to be anemic with hemoglobin of 4. Imaging revealed a blind-ending pouch in the mid to distal ileum consistent

Appendiceal Diverticulitis in a Young Female Diagnosed on Pathology after Laparoscopic Appendectomy for Acute Appendicitis.

Background. Appendiceal diverticulitis is a rare cause of inflammation of the appendix, which may mimic acute appendicitis. Its diagnosis is often delayed, and its occurrence carries an increased risk of significant complications, such as perforation. Case Presentation. A 23-year-old woman presented with sudden onset, severe, right lower quadrant abdominal pain and nausea. Her WBC was elevated, and abdominal CT showed findings indicative of acute appendicitis with a 13 mm fluid-filled appendix and local stranding. During laparoscopic appendectomy, significant inflammation was found around the

Variants and Pitfalls in PET/CT Imaging of Gastrointestinal Cancers.

In the past two decades, PET/CT has become an essential modality in oncology increasingly used in the management of gastrointestinal (GI) cancers. Most PET/CT tracers used in clinical practice show some degree of GI uptake. This uptake is quite variable and knowledge of common patterns of biodistribution of various radiotracers is helpful in clinical practice. 18F-Fluoro-Deoxy-Glucose (FDG) is the most commonly used radiotracer and has quite a variable uptake within the bowel. 68Ga-Prostate specific membrane antigen (PSMA) shows intense uptake within the proximal small bowel loops. 11C-methyl-

Congenital Appendiceal Diverticulum: An Incidental Finding During an Appendectomy.

Diverticula are small outpouchings that form at weak points in the wall of the digestive tract. They are commonly found in the colon, and while they can occur anywhere in the digestive tract, occurrence in the appendix is rare. Here, we report the case of a young woman presenting with complaints of right lower quadrant abdominal pain. The patient's physical examination, laboratory values, and computed tomography (CT) result supported the presumptive diagnosis of uncomplicated appendicitis. The patient underwent a laparoscopic appendectomy, where an appendiceal diverticulum was appreciated. A p

Meckel's Diverticulum Perforation by Foreign Body: A Case Report.

Meckel's diverticulum is the most common gastrointestinal congenital defect, which, although asymptomatic in adults, may present symptoms in obstruction, inflammation, bleeding and foreign body perforation. There are only 8 reported cases of Meckel's diverticulum perforation by chicken bone. We report a case of a 24-year-old man presenting a 2-day-history of periumbilical pain that shifted to the right lower quadrant in 24 hours. Clinical and laboratory findings led to an appendicitis diagnosis, followed by laparotomy. Normal appendix was found intraoperatively along with an incidental finding
