Post-appendectomy fecal fistula is a rare complication, but it is associated with significant morbidity. Etiological factors of post-appendectomy fecal fistula formation include severe peri-appendicitis involving the base of the appendix as well as adjoining caecal wall; neoplasia of the appendix and caecum; infective bowel conditions especially intestinal tuberculosis, actinomycosis and Crohn's disease; distal obstruction and gossypiboma. Diagnosis of post-appendectomy fecal fistula is usually made on CT-scan but Fistulography is also useful in the late stages of the disease. Treatment of pos

A fistulous communication between the appendix and any viscus is rare. Such fistula is most often acquired due to recurrent appendicitis, cystic fibrosis, Crohn's disease, tuberculosis, and malignancy. Here in, we report a rare case of an appendico-ileal fistula incidentally detected during laparotomy for adhesive small bowel obstruction. The fistula was divided, the ileal opening was sutured, and appendectomy was performed. Postoperative recovery was uneventful, with no evidence of malignancy, tuberculosis, or inflammatory bowel disease on the histopathological examination of the appendix.

Amyand's hernia is defined as the presence of an appendix contained within an inguinal hernia. An inguinal hernia is the protrusion of a small or large bowel through a peritoneal defect of the groin. In rare cases, the appendix can become incarcerated or strangulated within the hernia, cutting off the blood supply to the organ. If incarcerated, the appendix is at risk for strangulation, which can lead to rupture and cause worsening of symptoms and/or collapse. We report a case of a 76-year-old male with a history of inguinal hernia repair 30 years prior, who presented with 30 days of intermitt

Appendicovesical fistula is a rare complication associated with appendicitis, Crohn's disease, or appendiceal tumors, posing significant diagnostic challenges. We reported a pediatric case of appendicovesical fistula that remained undiagnosed by non-contrast computed tomography, fluoroscopic voiding cystourethrography (VCUG). Although identified during cystoscopy, its connection to the fistula site could not be determined. However, the transvesical contrast-enhanced ultrasound clearly demonstrated the presence of fistula. Subsequently, laparoscopic appendectomy and bladder repair were performe

BACKGROUND: This is an update of a Cochrane review first published in 2017. Acute appendicitis (inflammation of the appendix) can be simple or complicated. Appendiceal phlegmon and appendiceal abscess are examples of complicated appendicitis. Appendiceal phlegmon is a diffuse inflammation in the bottom right of the appendix, while appendiceal abscess is a discrete inflamed mass in the abdomen that contains pus. Appendiceal phlegmon and abscess account for 2% to 10% of acute appendicitis. People with appendiceal phlegmon or abscess usually need an appendicectomy to relieve their symptoms (e.g.

Multiple types of fistulas associated with the appendix have been reported; however, duodenal fistula resulting from perforated acute appendicitis has only been documented in one previous case. In this report, we present the case of an 18-year-old male patient who was diagnosed to have a complicated appendicitis in its normal position with abscess formation. He was started on IV antibiotics and underwent a CT-guided drainage of the abscess with drain placement. Two days later due to biliary output from the drain, CT fistulography and diagnostic laparoscopy were performed that revealed the pres

INTRODUCTION: Ladd's procedure, originally described in 1936 for the treatment of malrotation, does not traditionally include appendectomy as a standard step. We conducted a multinational survey to investigate the current consensus on the role of appendectomy in Ladd's procedure.
METHODOLOGY: An anonymous online survey was distributed to pediatric surgeons worldwide. The survey collected demographic data and explored surgical preferences related to the management of malrotation. Open-ended questions were used to assess the opinions regarding the necessity of appendectomy, decision-making fact

Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN) is principally characterized by low-grade cytology without evidence of invasion to other organs. We report a LAMN surgical case whose appendiceal tumor penetrated the sigmoid colon wall. An 87-year-old man was referred for endoscopic resection (ER) of a colon polyp. Despite four ERs over 5 years, the polyp recurred at the same site. Laparoscopic surgery revealed a dilated appendix firmly attached to the sigmoid colon. We performed en bloc resection of both the sigmoid colon and appendix without tumor exposure. The histopathological evaluation show

OBJECTIVES: An abscess is a localized collection of pus contained within a fibrous capsule. In this study, we aimed to determine the demographic pattern, common anatomical sites, risk factors, and the microbial profile of abscesses in different body sites among children.
METHODS: We conducted a prospective study in our pediatric surgical department among children with abscesses in different body sites between January 2019 and December 2022.
RESULTS: During the study period, 85 children were included. The participant age range was 0 to 14 years old, and 66% of participants were boys. The most

PURPOSE: Amyand's hernia (AH) is the name given to the type of hernia in which the appendix is found in a hernial sac. We aimed to share our clinical experience with a literature review for AH.
METHODS: A total of 1,774 inguinal hernias and 13 AH cases were repaired in our clinic between 2009 and 2020. In addition, detailed clinical features about AH were extracted by including unpublished data of 165 cases, which were gathered from the extensive literature on childhood AHs using PubMed, Web of Science, and Cochrane databases.
RESULTS: The rate of AH was 0.73% in all inguinal hernias; this r

INTRODUCTION: Surgical instrument retention continues to occur despite considerable preventive efforts. The resulting infection can be asymptomatic or demonstrate variable clinical presentations, such as intestinal obstruction, malnutrition, gastrointestinal bleeding, peritonitis, adhesions, fistulas, abscesses, erosion and/or intestinal perforation. In this case report, we present a patient whose last surgical event occurred 22 years prior with appendicular symptoms and a palpable abdominal mass.
PATIENT PRESENTATION: The patient was a 42-year-old female with a history of three caesarean sec

BACKGROUND: Acute appendicitis is a common surgical emergency that causes acute abdominal pain and affects approximately 7-8% of the population during their lifetime. The closure of the appendix stump during laparoscopic appendectomy is one of the most critical steps of the surgery to prevent life-threatening complications such as postoperative fistula, peritonitis, and sepsis. The mate-rial chosen for appendix stump closure must be effective, safe, and economical. However, there is still no consensus on the optimal method for stump closure. In this study, we aimed to compare the advantages an

Enteroenteric fistula in the pediatric age group is an unusual presentation. It can create a diagnostic dilemma for the physician, particularly in the absence of any previous surgery, prolonged abdominal symptoms, or inflammatory bowel disease. The patient is a 10-year-old girl who presented with mild-grade fever, abdominal distension, scanty stool passage, and foul-smelling vomiting for the past 10 days. Before this, the patient had received treatment for 20 days for her fever and diarrhea from a quack, and her symptoms had improved. There was no history of prolonged fever, chronic diarrhea,

Globally, acute appendicitis has an estimated lifetime risk of 7-8%. However, there are numerous controversies surrounding the management of acute appendicitis, and the best treatment approach depends on patient characteristics. Non-operative management (NOM), which involves the utilization of antibiotics and aggressive intravenous hydration, and surgical appendectomy are valid treatment options for healthy adults. NOM is also ideal for poor surgical candidates. Another important consideration is the timing of surgery, i.e., the role of interval appendectomy (IA) and the possibility of delayin

The abdominal seatbelt sign is well described in the literature as an indicative of intra-abdominal visceral injuries; it is considered rare because it is difficult to detect with no single observation providing reliable diagnosis. Consequently, it often presages a delayed diagnosis. We here report lessons from management of 44 year-old man professional driver, victim of a road traffic accident who underwent a damage control laparotomy and whose abdominal seatbelt sign was diagnosed late. To our knowledge, abdominal seatbelt sign has never been reported in a context of rural hospital with low

BACKGROUND: Acute appendicitis is the leading emergency condition among surgical abdominal diseases. The treatment of choice for appendicitis is open or laparoscopic appendectomy. There are different methods for appendiceal stump closure. Laparoscopic ap-pendectomy became more applicable with hand-made endo-loop applications to close the appendiceal stump, especially in state hospi-tals where the resources were limited. This article aims to evaluate the outcomes of patients undergoing laparoscopic appendectomy with the appendiceal stump closure using a hand-made endo-loop.

BACKGROUND: Acute appendicitis (AA) is a surgical emergency because of inflammation in the appendix leading to swelling, whereas acute complicated appendicitis is characterized by a gangrenous or perforated appendix with or without periappendicular abscess, peritonitis, and an appendicular mass. The laparoscopic approach in complicated acute appendicitis is a viable alternative method but is not practiced in all cases because of technical difficulties and unpredictable complications. Thus, the present study aimed to evaluate the primary and secondary outcome predictors of laparoscopic appendec

BACKGROUND: The coexistence of Crohn's disease (CD) and acute appendicitis (AA) is rare. In this situation, therapeutic experience is lacking and the strategy is paradoxical and intractable. Appendectomy is the gold standard for the treatment of AA whereas a nonsurgical approach is recommended for CD.
CASE SUMMARY: A 17-year-old boy was hospitalized for right lower abdominal pain with fever of 3 days. He had the CD for 8 years. Two years ago, he underwent surgery for anal fistula with the complication of CD. His temperature was elevated at 38.3°C at admission. On physical examination, there w

INTRODUCTION: Diverticulitis is a common gastrointestinal disease usually presenting with a typical clinical picture depending on the stage of the disease. In complicated cases, the clinical presentation may be untypical, thus delaying diagnosis and treatment.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: We present a case of a young patient who was initially treated for obscure intraabdominal abscesses presumably due to gangrenous appendicitis; however, intraoperative exploration revealed a normal appendix and a coloenteric fistula resulting from an unknown and untreated perforated diverticulitis.
DISCUSSION: A pa
