A Systematic Literature Review of Demographics, Clinical Presentation and Surgical Procedures Performed for the Appendico-Umbilical Fistula for the Past 100 Years.

The persistent vitellointestinal duct (PVID) is the rarest of all the vitelline duct anomalies. The enteric end of the vitelline duct mostly connects to the terminal ileum. The appendico-umbilical fistula (appendiceal-umbilical fistula) in which the proximal end of the vitelline duct connects to the appendix is a rare clinical entity. This systematic literature review was carried out to review the demographics, clinical characteristics and operative procedures executed for the appendico-umbilical fistula. Literature/cases with incomplete desired details for the above-mentioned anomaly were exc

Characteristics and outcomes of pediatric dural arteriovenous fistulas: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Dural arteriovenous fistulas (dAVF) are arteriovenous shunts in communication with the dural vasculature in the brain or spine. Apart from single-center series, risk factors and treatment outcomes for pediatric dAVFs are largely undescribed. METHODS: We performed a systematic literature review of pediatric (< 18 years at diagnosis) intracranial and spinal dAVF according to PRISMA guidelines. We queried PubMed, CINAHL, SCOPUS, and Embase databases without time/date restriction. Search strings included a variety of MeSH keywords relating to dural AV fistulas in combination with MeSH

Amyand's hernia with a perforated appendix and an enterocutaneous fistula: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Amyand's hernia is a rare finding accounting for less than 1 % of inguinal hernias. The appendix with its pathology within the hernia sac may become isolated from the gastrointestinal tract, which can cause further confusion in clinical diagnosis. Awareness of the possibility of such appendiceal isolation could aid in clinical diagnosis. We report a rare case of Amyand's hernia complicated with a perforated appendix and an enterocutaneous fistula. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 64-year-old gentleman with diabetes mellitus type II and hypertension presented with a right inguinal swellin

The displaced polymer clamp entered the duodenum causing an abscess: A case report.

RATIONALE: The Hem-o-lok clip, made from a nonabsorbable polymer, and its predecessor the metal ligation clip have been used widely for laparoscopic or robot-assisted surgery to ligate the cystic duct after a cholecystectomy, to ligate the appendix after an appendectomy, or control hemorrhage or on occasion to occlude a fistula or enterotomy. Displacement of these ligation clips to distant sites is an extremely rare complication in clinical practice. PATIENT CONCERNS: The patient is a 67-year old female who sought medical attention for 3 days due to worsening intermittent upper abdominal pain

Thermal Injury to the Subhepatic Appendix Following Percutaneous Ultrasound-Guided Radiofrequency Ablation for Hepatocellular Carcinoma: A Case Report.

We present the first documented case of a fistula between the treated zone and the appendix after RFA in a patient with HCC. Contrast-enhanced CT and MRI revealed a subcapsular hepatic nodule with image findings of HCC located adjacent to the ascending colon and cecum. An ultrasound-guided core needle biopsy was subsequently performed to distinguish between hepatic metastasis and HCC. Post-RFA imaging identified a low-attenuating ablated area adjacent to an air-filled appendix. The patient later experienced complications, including increased liver enzymes and an abscess at the ablation site. I

Isolated adult ileocecal intussusception in sigmoid colon due to non-specific inflammation.

Adult ileocecal intussusception due to non-specific inflammation is a rare condition. Intussusception is the intestinal segment telescoping into the adjacent intestinal lumen. Typically, a pathological lesion is discovered with a high percentage of malignancy. Intussusception of the most common ileocolic kind includes the appendix, but it is uncommon for an appendix to serve as the lead point. The patient was admitted to the emergency department with a complaint of acute intestinal obstruction. After getting a diagnostic workup, an exploratory laparotomy was done, and the ileocecal and ascendi

Can childbearing spinal cord injury women with continent cutaneous urinary diversion have child?

Over the last half century, significant improvements in health outcomes for individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) and growing recognition those women with SCI can become pregnant. However, pregnancy must be rated as high risk and requires multidisciplinary medical care as higher rate of complication compare to general population. Most of published literature grouped all patients with lower urinary tract reconstruction (LUTR) like exstrophy-epispadias complex, spina bifida, interstitial cystitis urogenital sinus or fistula, but our article is focusing in the childbearing SCI women who under

Umbilical Appendix Masquerading as a Patent Omphalomesenteric Duct in a Neonate.

The umbilicus is the site of a number of well-recognized and unusual abnormalities. Well-known neonatal umbilical abnormalities include umbilical hernias, granulomas/polyps, and congenital remnants of development. In this article, we describe a rare case of an appendix draining through the umbilicus of a neonate. In the literature, there are only 15 cases with possible umbilical appendix. We describe this rare case along with a review of the literature and discuss the underlying pathophysiology.

Discitis due to late-onset mesh infection 14 years after inguinal hernia repair: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Mesh infection after inguinal hernia repair is a very rare complication. The incidence of late-onset mesh infection is approximately 0.1-0.2% of total hernia repair cases and can lead to serious complications if not treated promptly. Here, we report a rare case of discitis due to late-onset mesh infection, occurring 14 years after an inguinal hernia repair. CASE PRESENTATION: An 89-year-old man was brought to our hospital with right-sided abdominal pain and signs of hypoglycemia. He had a history of type 2 diabetes mellitus and had undergone inguinal hernia repair 14 years ago. Up

Autoamputation of the appendix and survival of the amputated part: a rare case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Autoamputation of the appendix, i.e., complete separation of a part of the appendix without any surgical intervention, has been rarely documented in the literature in recent years. Herein, we report a case where the amputated part of the appendix was viable after autoamputation and reviewed the related literature. CASE PRESENTATION: A 39-year-old female patient was admitted to our hospital complaining of abdominal pain and subsequently underwent an emergency laparoscopic appendectomy (LA). Intraoperatively, we found an abnormally short appendix protruding from the cecum and a stri

Emergency imaging of a rare cause of inguinal swelling: Amyand's hernia with perforated appendicitis and abscess-cutaneous fistula - a case report and review of the literature.

Inguinal hernias containing the appendix are rare, but even more exceptional is the occurrence of complicated appendicitis within the hernial sac with a cutaneous fistula. We report the case of a man in his 50s presenting to the emergency department with a right-sided erythematous and painful inguinal swelling secreting seropurulent material. A perforated appendix within an inguinal hernia complicated by an appendico-cutaneous fistula was diagnosed.

Appendix and ascending colon intussusception through a prolapsed transverse colostomy: A case report with literature review.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Stoma creation is one of the common performed surgical procedures. For both benign and malignant conditions, in elective and emergency settings. Like any surgical procedure, it is associated with complications. One of the most frequently encountered is prolapse, with the incidence rate reaching 26 %. On the other hand, intussusception of the bowel through the ostomy is a rare complication, with few cases being reported in the literature. CASE PRESENTATION: We reported a case of 52 years old female with a proximal limb transverse loop colostomy prolapse noted one-d

Strangulated Caecum, Appendix, and Terminal Ileum in Paraumbilical Hernia: An Unusual Presentation in the Elderly.

A common surgical condition caused by inadequate closure of the embryonic umbilical defect is an umbilical hernia. The paraumbilical hernia sac usually contains the omentum and bowel loop, although the caecum is infrequently present. The rare incidence of the caecum being present in the paraumbilical hernial sac is described in a few case reports in the literature. In this article, we'd like to discuss a case of a 71-year-old woman who presented with a paraumbilical hernia with strangulated caecum, appendix, and terminal ileum.
