Appendicovesical fistula presenting as hypokalaemic hyperchloraemic metabolic acidosis: a case report.

A 52-year-old man was admitted with diarrhoea and faecaluria and referred recurrent urinary tract infections for over 20 years. He also reported a two-week hospital admission more than 20 years ago for right iliac fossa pain, which was managed conservatively. Computed tomography showed a fistulous tract extending from the bladder with an unclear connection to the bowel. Cystoscopy confirmed the presence of a vesical fistula and biopsy of the tract confirmed colonic mucosa. Flexible sigmoidoscopy was negative. A cystogram was requested as an outpatient procedure and the patient was discharged a

Primary Aorto-Appendicular Fistula Accompanied by Infected Penetrating Aortic Ulcer - Case Report.

Primary aorto-appendicular fistulas are extremely rare in clinical practice, and there are only 3 such cases reported in the available literature. The aim of this study is to present the case of a 68-year-old female patient with primary aorto-appendicular fistula accompanied by infected penetrating aortic ulcer (PAU). At the time of her hospital admission, the patient did not demonstrate any typical symptoms. Multidetector computed tomography imaging of aorta was performed during an additional preoperative examination and the PAU of the infrarenal aortic segment was detected. Other pathologica

Multiple brain abscesses treated by extraction of the maxillary molars with chronic apical lesion to remove the source of infection.

PURPOSE: Cleft palate repair surgeries lack a regenerative reconstructive option and, in many cases, develop complications including oronasal fistula (ONF). Our group has developed a novel murine phenocopy of ONF to study the oral cavity wound healing program. Using this model, our team previously identified that delivery of FTY720 on a nanofiber scaffold had a unique immunomodulatory effect directing macrophages and monocytes into a pro-regenerative state during ONF healing. Here, the objective of this study was to determine the effects of local biomaterial-based FTY720 delivery in the ONF mo

Pseudomyxoma peritonei in a pediatric patient: A case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is a rare clinical condition, with an incidence of 1-2 cases per million, characterized by the dissemination of mucinous implants on the peritoneal surface and progressive gelatinous ascites. Although it usually presents an indolent behavior, its non-specific clinical presentation contributes to many cases remaining undiagnosed until a laparotomy is performed. With late diagnosis, performed after a long period of clinical deterioration and disease progression, it is common to find complications such as the formation of intestinal fistulas and obstruct

[Appendicular plastron: emergency or deferred surgery: a series of 27 cases collected in the surgical clinic of the Aristide Le Dantec Hospital].

Our study aimed to evaluate the outcome of the surgical treatment of appendicular plastron after deferred or emergency appendectomy. We conducted a retrospective, descriptive study of 27 patients treated for appendicular plastron from January 2000 to 31 December 2007. Diagnosis was based on clinical examination showing a mass in the right iliac fossa, on ultrasound or made intraoperatively. All patients undergoing emergency surgery were classified in Group I while those undergoing deferred surgery were classified in Group II. 18 men and 9 women were registered, with a sex-ratio man /Woman=2. Fistula Formation Secondary to Mucinous Appendiceal Adenocarcinoma May Be Related to a Favorable Prognosis: A Case Report and Literature Review.

A 90-year-old man was referred to our hospital because of a positive fecal occult blood test. Colonoscopy revealed a lesion with multiple nodules covered with abundant mucus at the hepatic flexure. Computed tomography showed a dilated appendix attached distally to the hepatic flexure. Right hemicolectomy was performed, and the pathological examination revealed a mucinous appendiceal adenocarcinoma infiltrating the hepatic flexure without pseudomyxoma peritonei. The patient is doing well without recurrence 12 months postoperatively. Extraperitoneal drainage of the malignant ascites caused by th

[Appendicitis, an unusual cause of acute abdomen in neonatal patients. A case report].

Appendicitis is the most frequent surgical disease in childhood, but it is very uncommon in the neonatal period. In this period of life, a delay in diagnosis (frequently due to the rareness of this pathology and lack of clinical suspicion) and consequently in therapeutic approach, frequently results in appendicular perforation and a subsequently poor evolution of this pathology. We present the case of a neonate with a history of Down's syndrome and Fallot's tetralogy. Due to her basal cardiopathy, she required surgical intervention to create a systemic-pulmonary fistula, as a temporary bridge

Operative versus non-operative therapy for acute phlegmon of the appendix: Is it safer? A case report and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: There is no clear standardized approach to complicated appendicitis associated with abscess or phlegmon, with treatment varying from immediate appendectomy versus non-operative management with antibiotics and possible interval appendectomy. This case report reviews a presentation of complicated appendicitis failing non-operative therapy and reviews the literature on complicated appendicitis. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 19 year-old male presented with right lower quadrant pain, leukocytosis, and fever. He had been seen at an outside hospital, diagnosed with complicated appendicitis,

[A Case of Appendiceal Adenocarcinoma with Vesico-Appendiceal Fistula Treated by Additional Laparoscopic Excision].

A 40-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with the chief complaint of miction pain. MRI showed fundal wall thickening of the bladder in contact with the appendix. Under cystoscopy, redness of the mucous membrane was found in the posterior wall of the bladder. Therefore, laparo-appendectomy with partial cystectomy was performed. Microscopically, adenocarcinoma cells were observed in the lumen of the appendix, invading the wall of the urinary bladder at the fundus of the appendix. We performed laparo-ileocecal resection for a regional lymphadenectomy. Thus, the patient was diagnosed with

Diarrhea Concealing a Duodenal-Cecal Fistula Secondary to Appendiceal Mucinous Neoplasm.

Primary mucinous adenocarcinoma of the appendix is a rare gastrointestinal malignancy. Fistulous tract formation is a complication that is cited in literature. An 85-year-old man with multiple comorbidities presented with several weeks of persistent non-bloody diarrhea. Laboratory work-up was non-diagnostic. Abdominal imaging with barium contrast showed an enterocolonic fistulous tract extending from the duodenum to the cecum involving an enlarged appendiceal mass. Subsequent biopsy confirmed mucinous appendiceal neoplasm with peritoneal spread to the liver and mesentery. This is the first rep

Gallstone ileus presenting as obstructive gangrenous appendicitis.

We present the very unusual case of a 38-year-old woman with acute appendicitis and intestinal obstruction. During surgery, a 2.5 cm gallstone impacted at the base of the cecal appendix was found as the cause of a gangrenous appendicitis and obstruction; a choledochal-duodenal fistula was found during the same surgery with no gallstones remaining in the gallbladder or elsewhere. The case was managed by appendectomy with retrieval of the gallstones and no other procedure was performed for the gallbladder or the fistula, since no other gallstone was found on examination. Previously, she was foun

The association of the severity of anorectal malformations and intestinal malrotation.

INTRODUCTION: Intestinal malrotation is a known association of anorectal malformations (ARM). Exact incidence, prognosis and surgical implications related to ARM are unknown. The aim of this study was to identify relevant associations between ARM and the presence of malrotation. METHODS: Records of patients from two referral centers were retrospectively analyzed looking for malrotation associated to ARM and its management, as well as factors for functional prognosis. RESULTS: 40 patients out of 2572 with ARM (1.6%) were found to have malrotation. Females were more commonly affected, and seve
