The main aim of the treatment of deep venous thrombosis (DVT) is to prevent the onset of the main complications: embolism (acute) and post-phlebothrombotic syndrome-PPS--(late complication). If not treated, during the acute phase DVT presents extension and/or embolism in 60% of cases and pulmonary embolism is potentially fatal in 5-10%. PPS is the most frequent complication (up to 70% of cases). The main characteristics of oral necrotic lesions in leukemia and the treatment and consequence of these pathologies are described. These lesions are classified as noma-like lesions, necrotic gangrenous ulcers of the oral cavity mucosa appearing in severe organic diseases. A new therapeutical approach in the treatment of oral necrotic lesions in chronic leukemia by the use of CO2 laser is tried and a case with the results obtained is presented.

Complications, occurred after the operation for appendicular peritonitis in children, were analyzed. The frequency of the complications occurrence in patients with an acute catarrhal appendicitis had constituted 1.4%, with phlegmonous one--3.5%, gangrenous--12.1%, gangrenous appendicitis with local restricted peritonitis--18.9%, with diffuse purulent peritonitis--42%. The dependence of the complications frequency on character and severity of primary changes in abdominal cavity was established.

A case of digital gangrene in a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus without secondary anti-phospholipid syndrome is reported. The acute onset of the necrotizing acrovasculitis occurred without a history of Raynaud's phenomenon. Preceding symptoms of the systemic lupus erythematosus were arthritis, photosensitivity, alopecia and anorexia. Despite the seriousness of the acute episode the patient achieved an excellent outcome.

Twenty six patients with Fourniers gangrene seen over an 8 year period at the University College Hospital Ibadan are presented. Their ages ranged from 34 years to 70 years with a mean of 52.5 years. An atypical lactic-acid producing gram positive rod Y6 strain was studied in this report, which was isolated form clinic sample of a patient with multiple bacterial synergistic gangrene, and could not be identified by routine method. DESIGN: The major clinical cause of death of all persons aged 60 years older residing in a nursing home during a 15-year period was investigated in a prospective study.
