Co-occurrence of retinoblastoma and oculocutaneous albinism in a Mexican patient: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Retinoblastoma (RB) and oculocutaneous albinism (OCA) are genetically independent disorders whose coexistence is exceptionally rare, with an estimated theoretical frequency of 1 in 800 million births. METHODS: We report a 5-month-old Hispanic male with OCA who developed unilateral multifocal RB. Next-generation sequencing identified a de novo heterozygous pathogenic RB1 nonsense variant (c.1411C > T, p. Gln471*) and homozygous pathogenic OCA2 missense variant (c.2228C > T, p. Pro743Leu). RESULTS: The profound retinal hypopigmentation characteristic of OCA precluded standard pig

Hyponatremic-Hypertensive Syndrome as a Rare Manifestation of Renovascular Hypertension: A Case Series.

BACKGROUND Hyponatremic-hypertensive syndrome is a rare but distinctive manifestation of renal ischemia caused by unilateral renal artery stenosis. It is characterized by severe arterial hypertension accompanied by hyponatremia, hypokalemia, metabolic alkalosis, and polyuria, resulting from complex interactions between the ischemic kidney and the contralateral functioning kidney. Owing to its rarity and potentially life-threatening course, early recognition and appropriate management are crucial. The purpose of this report is to highlight the clinical presentation, diagnostic challenges, and t

Influence of Cleft Laterality on Cleft Width, Canine and Lateral Incisor Status, and Adjacent Midfacial Midline Structures: A Retrospective CBCT Analysis.

Background/Objectives: This retrospective study examined, in patients with cleft palate, whether canine eruption status is associated with lateral incisor status, whether cleft width differs by laterality, age, or sex, and whether nasopalatine canal and septal position correlate with cleft laterality. Methods: CBCT examinations of 33 patients were reviewed, including small subgroups of 7 unilateral right-sided, 14 unilateral left-sided and 12 bilateral cases. Lateral incisor and canine status were compared using Fisher's exact test; cleft width was compared by laterality, age, and sex using th

ST20 Staphylococcus aureus causing suppurative cervical lymphadenitis in an extremely low-birth-weight infant.

Neonatal suppurative cervical lymphadenitis is uncommon, particularly in extremely low-birth-weight infants. We report a 772 g infant born at 28 weeks of gestation who developed rapidly progressive unilateral cervical lymphadenitis caused by methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) on postnatal day 31. The infant remained afebrile and blood cultures were negative despite progression requiring repeated drainage. The cervical isolate was genotyped as ST20/spa-t3929 and shared an identical genetic profile with an earlier pharyngeal isolate, suggesting that the infection arose from pre

Spontaneous Urinary Bladder Rupture Secondary to OHVIRA Syndrome.

As a rare mesonephric duct-induced Mullerian anomaly, OHVIRA syndrome is characterised by the triad of uterus didelphys, obstructed hemivagina and ipsilateral renal anomaly. Equally rare is the spontaneous rupture of the urinary bladder (SRUB), a condition that constitutes a life-threatening surgical emergency. This case represents an unprecedented presentation of OHVIRA syndrome involving SRUB. A 19-year-old female presented with acute abdomen superimposed on a long-standing progressive dysmenorrhea and recent dysuria. Diagnosis of OHVIRA syndrome was confirmed by imaging; however, SRUB was o

Diagnostic value of saline infusion test-derived biochemical parameters for primary aldosteronism subtyping.

BACKGROUND: Current clinical practice guidelines recommend adrenal venous sampling (AVS) for subtype classification in patients with primary aldosteronism (PA) who are candidates for adrenalectomy; however, AVS may be considered unnecessary in selected young patients with a high probability of unilateral disease. The additional diagnostic information provided by baseline and saline infusion test (SIT)-derived biochemical parameters when evaluated alongside clinical and radiological features remains uncertain. We aimed to compare the diagnostic performance of baseline and SIT-derived biochemica

Neoadjuvant versus adjuvant chemotherapy in luminal B-like breast cancer: a subset analysis of the CANTO study.

BACKGROUND: The benefit of neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) in hormone receptor (HR)-positive/human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-negative breast cancer (BC) remains uncertain, given low pathologically documented complete response (pCR) rates and limited long-term comparative data. We compared overall survival (OS) between NAC and adjuvant chemotherapy (AC) in luminal B-like breast cancer treated in routine practice. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients enrolled in the prospective French CANTO cohort between January 2012 and December 2018 with unilateral, nonmetastatic, grade 3 HR-positiv

Left atrial and left ventricular radiation exposure predict long-term cardiovascular events after breast cancer radiotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Adjuvant breast cancer (BC) radiotherapy (RT) improves survival and local control, but cardiovascular (CV) toxicity remains a concern. AIM: This retrospective study investigated the association between RT doses to cardiac substructures and CV toxicity 15 years after BC RT. METHODS: Women with unilateral BC diagnosed between 2007 and 2008, treated with RT at [Anonymous] were retrospectively included. Patients with major adverse cardiac events (MACE) were matched to controls by CV risk factors, anthracycline and anti-HER2 therapy. Cardiac substructures were delineated on simulation

Neutralization of the PTX3/CD44 axis suppresses TGF-β1 signaling in kidney fibrosis.

Renal fibrosis is a hallmark of chronic kidney disease (CKD), but effective antifibrotic therapies are lacking. Pentraxin 3 (PTX3) is markedly upregulated in CKD patients and in a unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO) model, correlating with renal injury, extracellular matrix accumulation, partial epithelial-mesenchymal transition markers, and TGF-β1 signaling. Genetic deletion of Ptx3 significantly attenuates UUO-induced fibrosis. Mechanistically, PTX3 promotes transcription of LTBP-1 and fibronectin, facilitating latent TGF-β1 activation and inducing a profibrotic partial EMT program in tubu

Group A Streptococcus in an Unexpected Site: Temporal Pyomyositis in 2 Children.

BACKGROUND: Pyomyositis is an uncommon bacterial infection of skeletal muscle. Group A Streptococcus (GAS) accounts for a smaller proportion of pediatric cases, and temporal muscle involvement is exceptionally rare. CASE DESCRIPTION: We report 2 previously healthy children, a 7-year-old boy and a 6-year-old girl, who presented with acute otitis media (AOM) and painful unilateral temporomandibular swelling. Computed tomography revealed AOM with temporal myositis, complicated by mastoiditis in the first case. Both were treated with intravenous antibiotics, and the first case required drainage a

Combined cold atmospheric plasma and photobiomodulation is associated with improved early macroscopic and ultrasonographic wound-healing parameters after unilateral mastectomy in female dogs: an exploratory randomized intra-individual controlled clinical study.

BACKGROUND: Postmastectomy complications remain relevant in veterinary surgery. Although cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) and photobiomodulation (PBM) may improve tissue repair, evidence on their combined use is limited. This exploratory pilot study evaluated CAP-PBM therapy in nine female dogs undergoing unilateral mastectomy. METHODS: A prospective, randomized, blinded, intra-individual controlled clinical study was conducted in nine female dogs with mammary neoplasia undergoing clinically indicated unilateral mastectomy. In each dog, one half of the surgical wound was randomly assigned to rec

Addressing unilateral lambdoid craniosynostosis using endoscopic suturectomy and barrel-stave osteotomies: surgical technique and literature review.

PURPOSE: Unilateral lambdoid craniosynostosis (ULC) is a rare cranial deformity requiring intervention to correct asymmetry of the posterior skull. Conventional open remodeling and distraction osteogenesis offer robust expansion but carry risks of higher blood loss, hardware complications, or reoperation. We report a novel, minimally invasive technique combining endoscopic lambdoid suturectomy with barrel-stave osteotomies, supplemented by a literature review. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 2-month-old healthy male presented with classic left ULC features, including occipitoparietal flattening, ipsilate

Longitudinal Development of Facial Symmetry after Primary Cleft Lip Repair: A Comparison of Subperiosteal and Supraperiosteal Techniques.

BACKGROUND: Primary cleft lip repair aims to restore both function and aesthetics of the nasolabial complex. Although several surgical techniques provide comparable functional outcomes, their long-term effects on facial symmetry remain unclear. This study compared postoperative facial symmetry following supraperiosteal and subperiosteal primary cleft lip repair using standardized photographic and digital anthropometric analysis. METHODS: This retrospective monocentric study included 46 patients with non-syndromic unilateral cleft lip and palate. Patients underwent either supraperiosteal repai

Functional stabilization and neuromuscular adaptation in active condylar hyperplasia: a comparative cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Active unilateral condylar hyperplasia (UCH) is a progressive mandibular growth disorder characterized by facial asymmetry, occlusal alteration, and mandibular deviation. Although single-photon emission computed tomography/computed tomography (SPECT/CT) is widely used to assess condylar hyperactivity, little is known about the clinical and neuromuscular adaptations occurring during the observation period before definitive treatment. This study evaluated whether conservative functional stabilization is associated with adaptive clinical and neuromuscular changes during this period.

Caring for a patient with Fournier gangrene.

Fournier gangrene (FG) is a form of necrotizing fasciitis that affects the genital and perineal tissues. This life-threatening condition is most often caused by a polymicrobial bacterial infection of the tissues. Predisposing factors include obesity, advanced age, chronic alcohol abuse, and immunosuppression. Although rare, FG can be life-threatening and can significantly impact the patient's quality of life. Adept nursing care can improve patient outcomes. This article discusses the pathophysiology and common complications of FG and outlines expected nursing considerations for patients with t

Spermatic cord tunnel Penrose drainage for cephalad-tracking Fournier's gangrene: a case report.

Fournier's gangrene tracking cephalad along spermatic cords complicates source control and soft tissue reconstruction. We describe a 61-year-old male with poorly controlled diabetes who presented with extensive scrotal necrotizing fasciitis tracking superiorly to the suprapubic region. Following wide excisional debridement, bilateral Penrose drains were passed through the spermatic cord tunnels and brought out through dependent perineal counter incisions. This technique provided effective through-and-through drainage of the cephalad tracts while limiting abdominal tissue loss. Deep wound cultu

Optic disc drusen as a diagnostic confounder in a child with Alice in Wonderland syndrome.

We report the case of a 10-year-old boy referred for transient visual episodes compatible with Alice in Wonderland syndrome, described as a sensation that objects were moving away. Ophthalmic examination showed preserved visual acuity and an unremarkable anterior segment, but revealed elevation of the left optic disc, prompting evaluation for true papilledema. Macular OCT was normal, whereas optic nerve head OCT demonstrated structural asymmetry consistent with pseudopapilledema. Brain and orbital MRI showed isolated enlargement of both optic nerve sheaths and mild elevation of the left optic

Combined Core Stability and Short Foot Exercises Improve Medial Longitudinal Arch and Dynamic Balance More Than Short Foot Exercises Alone in Female Child Badminton Players with Pes Planus: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Badminton involves rapid, multidirectional movements and unilateral landings that impose substantial mechanical stress on the foot-ankle complex. Athletes with pes planus are at an increased risk of instability and injury due to altered kinetic chain function. While short foot exercises (SFE) enhance medial longitudinal arch (MLA) integrity in individuals with flat feet, core stability training (CST) is increasingly incorporated into sports rehabilitation programs. However, the effects of CST on pes planus remain insufficiently explored. This study investigates the combined effects
