Hernia : the journal of hernias and abdominal wall surgery2016eng
PURPOSE: Anterior abdominal wall hernias are among the most commonly encountered surgical disease. We sought to identify risk factors that are associated with 30-day postoperative mortality following emergent abdominal wall hernia repair using the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS NSQIP) database.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of data from the ACS NSQIP from 2005 to 2010 was performed. Patients were selected using Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) and International Classification of Disease 9 Clinical Modification (ICD9) codes for the repai

The results of treatment of acute surgical diseases are worse in pregnant women, than in ordinary people, because of changes in patient's organism. However, these patients would be treated the same way as ordinary patient according to conventional standards. The authors launched the special centre for treatment of acute surgical diseases of abdominal cavity for pregnant women and puerperas in order to provide the adequacy of treatment to the changes of patient's organism. There was suggested a new standard of diagnostics, based on limited term (4-5 hours) with the following diagnostic laparosc

BACKGROUND: Robotic single-site cholecystectomy (RSSC) has been shown to be a safe alternative to the laparoscopic approach in selected patients. Patient exclusion criteria have prevented RSSC as a surgical option in many obese patients. This study reports the feasibility of performing RSSC in obese patients (body mass index [BMI] ≥ 30).
METHODS: Between November 2012 and February 2014, a total of 200 patients underwent RSSC at our institution. All patients were offered the robotic procedure regardless of their BMI, age, previous surgery, and acuity of their disease with no exclusion criteria

BACKGROUND: While many bowel resections in developed countries are due to congenital anomalies, indications for bowel resections in developing countries are mainly from preventable causes. The aim of the following study was to assess the indications for, morbidity and mortality following preventable bowel resection in our centre.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Retrospective analysis of all cases of bowel resection deemed preventable in children from birth to 18 years from June 2005 to June 2012.
RESULTS: There were 22 preventable bowel resections with an age range of 7 days to 17 years (median 6 mont

BACKGROUND: Complicated inguinal hernias pose a threat to the life of the child as well as increase the morbidity associated with management of an otherwise straightforward condition. The aim of this study was to determine the presentation, treatment and management outcome of complicated inguinal hernias in children.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study of all children 15 years and less managed for complicated inguinal hernia between 2002 and 2010. Data obtained included demographic characteristics, presentation, operative findings and outcome.
RESULTS: Complicated hernia rate was 13

BACKGROUND: Umbilical hernias are common in children but many resolve spontaneously within the first five years of life. Most umbilical herniorrhaphies in our environment are due to symptomatic hernias which constitute a small percentage of all umbilical hernias.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective review of all pediatric patients with UH treated at Federal Medical Centre Umuahia, Abia State from February 2001 to February 2011.
RESULTS: There were 22 patients but only 20 of the folders were found and analyzed. They were made up of 11 males and 9 females with a mean age of 6.19 +/- 0.83 yea

Hernia is one of the commonest complications of peritoneal dialysis. It is recommended that patients undergo surgical repair of hernias immediately after the diagnosis. We report a patient on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis presenting with strangulated umbilical hernia. He underwent resection of the gangrenous ileum and end-to-end anastomosis. He was shifted to hemodialysis on second postoperative day and was continued on hemodialysis for 2 weeks. In the third week, he was initiated on low volume PD exchanges and by the fourth week, he returned to normal CAPD exchanges.

A 28 year old woman presented with a spontaneous rupture of an umbilical hernia in her seventh month of pregnancy. She had four previous unsupervised normal deliveries. There was no history of trauma or application of herbal medicine on the hernia. The hernia sac ruptured at the inferior surface where it was attached to the ulcerated and damaged overlying skin. There was a gangrenous eviscerated small bowel. The patient was resuscitated and the gangrenous small bowel was resected and end to end anastomosis done. The hernia sac was excised and the 12 cm defect repaired. Six weeks later, she had

INTRODUCTION: Meckel's diverticulum affects 1 - 3% of general population and is known as the most common anomaly of gastrointestinal tract. However, its estimated lifetime complication rate is approximately 4%. Intestinal obstruction is most common complication of Meckel's diverticulum in adult population.
CASE PRESENTATION: In the present study, we reported a 42-year-old female patient with a gangrenous Meckel's diverticulum in a strangulated umbilical hernia sac treated by dissection of diverticulomesenteric bands and diverticulectomy. In 36 months follow-up, there was neither any complicat

OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine whether lack of insurance is associated with an increased likelihood of presenting to a hospital with a complicated hernia, and whether insurance status might be associated with clinical outcomes.
CONTEXT: Delays in elective repair of hernias appear to increase the likelihood of emergency presentation, morbidity, and mortality. Lack of access due to insurance status is a plausible contributor to such delays.
METHODS: This retrospective study evaluated ambulatory surgical and inpatient hospitalization data from January 1, 2005 through December 31, 2006 in Cal

BACKGROUND: Strangulated Meckel's diverticulum (MD) in an umbilical hernia (UH) is a rare event. We present herein a case of strangulated MD in UH in a child.
CASE REPORT: An 18-month girl was admitted with clinical features suggesting upper intestinal strangulation since seven days. Many attempts of reduction were done before admission. She was resuscitated and had exploratory laparotomy, which revealed the hernia sac containing a completely gangrenous MD. She had bowel resection and had an uneventful postoperative period.
CONCLUSION: An MD may be the content of a strangulated UH. Bowel res

The diagnosis of appendicitis is challenging in neonates and infants due to the unspecific clinical signs and symptoms, presence of many differentials and inability to elicit history from a preverbal child. Gangrenous retrocolic appendix mimicking incarcerated umbilical hernia is rare. Consequently, the correct diagnosis of a gangrenous retrocolic appendix in a 13-month-old boy who presented with features highly suggestive of incarceration of proboscoid congenital umbilical hernia was very challenging. This case is presented to highlight the diagnostic challenge and increase the suspicion of a

European journal of pediatric surgery : official journal of Austrian Association of Pediatric Surgery ... [et al] = Zeitschrift fur Kinderchirurgie2006eng
BACKGROUND: Umbilical hernia is common in children. Complications from umbilical hernias are thought to be rare and the natural history is spontaneous closure within 5 years.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed of the medical records of a series of 23 children who presented with incarcerated umbilical hernias at our institution over an 8-year period.
RESULTS: Fifty-two children with umbilical hernias were seen in the hospital over the period. Twenty-three (44.2%) had incarceration. Seventeen (32.7%) had acute incarceration while 6 (11.5%) had recurrent incarceration.

OBJECTS: Surgical repair of very large ventral hernias has become feasible after the introduction of synthetic meshes and developments in intensive-care treatment. In addition to the operative challenges, postoperative disorders in the cardiovascular system, tissue oxygenation, increased intra-abdominal pressure, and pulmonary embolism expose the patient to severe risks.
METHODS: From 1997-2002 we operated on ten patients with giant ventral incisional or umbilical hernia (mean defect size 240 cm(2)) by using retromuscular polypropylene mesh. All patients were morbidly obese [mean Body Mass In

Umbilical hernia is a common problem in children, particularly in Africans, but complications in these hernias are thought to be rare. In a retrospective study of 47 children presenting for umbilical hernia repair in 14 years, 30 had complications. The complications included acute incarceration 15, recurrent incarceration 10 and spontaneous evisceration 5. Of the 15 with acute incarceration, 2 required bowel resection for gangrene, and an abscess formed in the hernia sac in one. The age of patients with acute incarceration was 2 months-8 years (median 5 years). The 10 with recurrent incarcerat

The appendix is not uncommonly encountered within an external hernial sac. However, acute appendicitis in hernia is quite rare. We report a female patient who was admitted and operated as a case of incarcerated, strangulated paraumbilical hernia and the hernial sac was found to contain part of the greater omentum, pus and acutely inflamed, gangrenous appendix, perforated at the tip. Appendicectomy and hernial repair were carried out through the same incision.

The survival of infants with major abdominal-wall defects (AWD) has improved over the years in developed countries. In Zaria, northern Nigeria, survival from intact exomphalos (EX), has improved with the adoption of non-operative management. Ruptured EX (REX) and gastroschisis (GS), however, remain problematic. This is a report of the mortality in REX and GS in a retrospective review of 16 infants with REX and 14 with GS managed over 10 years at the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria. The median age at presentation was 3 days and 24 h for REX and GS, respectively; 29 of the 30 pa
