Takayasu's Arteritis: An Uncommon Cause of Hemorrhagic Stroke in Young Individuals.

The aorta is particularly damaged by Takayasu's arteritis (TA), a rare form of vasculitis. Chest discomfort, exhaustion, fever, elevated blood pressure, heart failure, and stroke can all result from this. Major intimal fibrosis with vascular constriction is the disease's hallmark; although anybody can have it, Asian females in their 20s or 30s seem to be most typically affected. The treatment of a 23-year-old Asian female with Takayasu's arteritis (TA) is discussed in this case study, along with her presentation. Before developing seizures, the patient first showed signs of left-sided weakness

Recent advances in the treatment of Ebola disease: A brief overview.

Ebola disease (EBOD) remains a significant and ongoing threat to African countries, characterized by a mortality rate of 25% to 90% in patients with high viral load and significant transmissibility. The most recent outbreak, reported in Uganda in September 2022, was declared officially over in January 2023. However, it was caused by the Sudan Ebola virus (SUDV), a culprit species not previously reported for a decade. Since its discovery in 1976, the management of EBOD has primarily relied on supportive care. Following the devastating outbreak in West Africa from 2014 to 2016 secondary to the Z

Restoration of virulence in the attenuated Candid#1 vaccine virus requires reversion at both positions 168 and 427 in the envelope glycoprotein GPC.

Live-attenuated virus vaccines provide long-lived protection against viral disease but carry inherent risks of residual pathogenicity and genetic reversion. The live-attenuated Candid#1 vaccine was developed to protect Argentines against lethal infection by the Argentine hemorrhagic fever arenavirus, Junín virus. Despite its safety and efficacy in Phase III clinical study, the vaccine is not licensed in the US, in part due to concerns regarding the genetic stability of attenuation. Previous studies had identified a single F427I mutation in the transmembrane domain of the Candid#1 envelope glyc

Novel Oliveros-like Clade C Mammarenaviruses from Rodents in Argentina, 1990-2020.

Following an Argentine Hemorrhagic Fever (AHF) outbreak in the early 1990s, a rodent survey for Junín virus, a New World Clade B arenavirus, in endemic areas of Argentina was conducted. Since 1990, INEVH has been developing eco-epidemiological surveillance of rodents, inside and outside the Argentine Hemorrhagic Fever endemic area. Samples from rodents captured between 1993 and 2019 that were positive for Arenavirus infection underwent Sanger and unbiased, Illumina-based high-throughput sequencing, which yielded 5 complete and 88 partial Mammarenaviruses genomes. Previously, 11 genomes represe

Chapare virus infection and current perspectives on dentistry.

OBJECTIVES: This narrative review addresses relevant points about Chapare virus (CHAV) entry in oral cells, CHAV transmission, and preventive strategies in dental clinical settings. It is critical in dentistry due to the frequent presence of gingival hemorrhage occurred in CHAV-infected patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Studies related to CHAV were searched in MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus, EMBASE, and Web-of-Science databases without language restriction or year of publication. RESULTS: Recently, the PAHO/WHO and CDC indicate a presence of human-to-human transmission of CHAV associated with direct

Computational and stability analysis of Ebola virus epidemic model with piecewise hybrid fractional operator.

In this manuscript, we developed a nonlinear fractional order Ebola virus with a novel piecewise hybrid technique to observe the dynamical transmission having eight compartments. The existence and uniqueness of a solution of piecewise derivative is treated for a system with Arzel'a-Ascoli and Schauder conditions. We investigate the effects of classical and modified fractional calculus operators, specifically the classical Caputo piecewise operator, on the behavior of the model. A model shows that a completely continuous operator is uniformly continuous, and bounded according to the equilibrium

Highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 virus infections in pinnipeds and seabirds in Uruguay: Implications for bird-mammal transmission in South America.

The highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses of clade 2.3.4.4b have caused unprecedented deaths in South American wild birds, poultry, and marine mammals. In September 2023, pinnipeds and seabirds appeared dead on the Uruguayan Atlantic coast. Sixteen influenza virus strains were characterized by real-time reverse transcription PCR and genome sequencing in samples from sea lions (Otaria flavescens), fur seals (Arctocephalus australis), and terns (Sterna hirundinacea). Phylogenetic and ancestral reconstruction analysis showed that these strains have pinnipeds most likely as the ancestral host,

Aspartate Aminotransferase-to-Platelet Ratio Index (APRI) as a Novel Score in Early Detection of Complicated Dengue Fever.

INTRODUCTION: The occurrence of dengue fever presents a considerable burden for public health care in developing countries. This study aims to validate APRI as predictor score for severity of dengue fever so that catastrophic events could be prevented, and early triage can save lives. METHODS: The retrospective cross-sectional study was done on dengue positive patients from August to November 2023. APRI score was calculated for every patient at the time of admission. The primary end-point was non-complicated disease (Simple dengue fever) vs complicated disease (dengue hemorrhagic fever and de

Coadministration of LHF-535 and favipiravir protects against experimental Junín virus infection and disease.

Argentine hemorrhagic fever, caused by Junín virus (JUNV), is the most common of the South American arenaviral hemorrhagic fevers. The disease has a case fatality rate of 15-30% in untreated patients. Although early intervention with immune plasma is effective, diminishing stocks and limited availability outside of Argentina underscores the need for new therapeutics. Ideally, these would be broadly active agents effective against all the pathogenic arenaviruses. The fusion inhibitor LHF-535 and the nucleoside analog favipiravir have shown promise in animal models of Lassa fever, a disease ende

Critical care management of hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome. A narrative review.

Hantaviruses, members of the Bunyaviridae family, can cause two patterns of disease in humans, hantavirus hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) and cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS), being the latter hegemonic on the American continent. Andesvirus is one of the strains that can cause HCPS and is endemic in Chile. Its transmission occurs through direct or indirect contact with infected rodents' urine, saliva, or feces and inhalation of aerosol particles containing the virus. HCPS rapidly evolves into acute but reversible multiorgan dysfunction. The hemodynamic pattern of HCPS is not identi

In silico design of multi-epitope vaccines against the hantaviruses by integrated structural vaccinology and molecular modeling approaches.

Hantaviruses are single-stranded RNA viruses belonging to the family Bunyaviridae that causes hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS) and hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) worldwide. Currently, there is no effective vaccination or therapy available for the treatment of hantavirus, hence there is a dire need for research to formulate therapeutics for the disease. Computational vaccine designing is currently a highly accurate, time and cost-effective approach for designing effective vaccines against different diseases. In the current study, we shortlisted highly antigenic proteins

Comparison of uridine and N1-methylpseudouridine mRNA platforms in development of an Andes virus vaccine.

The rodent-borne Andes virus (ANDV) causes a severe disease in humans. We developed an ANDV mRNA vaccine based on the M segment of the viral genome, either with regular uridine (U-mRNA) or N1-methylpseudouridine (m1Ψ-mRNA). Female mice immunized by m1Ψ-mRNA developed slightly greater germinal center (GC) responses than U-mRNA-immunized mice. Single cell RNA and BCR sequencing of the GC B cells revealed similar levels of activation, except an additional cluster of cells exhibiting interferon response in animals vaccinated with U-mRNA but not m1Ψ-mRNA. Similar immunoglobulin class-switching and

Analysis of the Unique Historical Isolate of African Swine Fever Virus Isolate Spencer from Outbreaks in 1951.

African swine fever (ASF) is a deadly hemorrhagic disease of domestic and wild swine that was first described in the early 20th century after the introduction of European pigs to Kenya. The etiological agent, the African swine fever virus (ASFV), is a large DNA virus within the Asfarviridae family that is broadly categorized epidemiologically into genotypes based on the nucleotide sequence of B646L, the gene encoding the major capsid protein p72. ASF outbreaks in Africa have been linked historically to 25 genotypes by p72 nucleotide analysis and, recently, to 6 genotypes by amino acid comparis

Infection of South American coatis (Nasua nasua) with highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 virus displaying mammalian adaptive mutations.

Deadly outbreaks among poultry, wild birds, and carnivorous mammals by the highly pathogenic H5N1 virus of the clade 2.3.4.4b have been reported in South America. The increasing virus incidence in various mammal species poses a severe zoonotic and pandemic threat. In Uruguay, the clade 2.3.4.4b viruses were first detected in February 2023, affecting wild birds and backyard poultry. Three months after the first reported case in Uruguay, the disease affected a population of 23 coatis (Nasua) in an ecological park. Most animals became infected, likely directly or indirectly from wild birds in the

HEMATOLOGY AND BIOCHEMICAL REFERENCE INTERVALS FOR FREE-RANGING PRONGHORN (ANTILOCAPRA AMERICANA) IN WEST TEXAS.

Pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) are considered a keystone species of North American grasslands and an important economic source for many landowners in Texas. Pronghorn restoration projects routinely capture and translocate individuals from surplus populations to restoration areas. The objective of this study was to generate normal hematological and biochemical reference intervals (RI) for free-ranging pronghorn populations in Texas as a health monitoring tool for pronghorn restoration efforts. Blood samples were collected by jugular venipuncture and divided among an EDTA tube, serum separato

Modeling and analysis using piecewise hybrid fractional operator in time scale measure for ebola virus epidemics under Mittag-Leffler kernel.

This emerging infectious disease poses one of the most severe threats to public health in these locations, but there are not many reliable therapies yet. In this work, we developed the Ebola virus dynamics and control factors epidemic model with a piecewise hybrid fractional Operator in time scale measure insight of Mittag-Leffler kernel. Patterns and structures that repeat at various scales are the focus of fractal analysis, which has applications in complex systems such as biological ones. Both qualitatively and statistically, a proposed model with the Lipschitz criteria and linear growth is

Targeting n-myristoyltransferases promotes a pan-Mammarenavirus inhibition through the degradation of the Z matrix protein.

Several Old World and New World Mammarenavirus are responsible for hemorrhagic fever in humans. These enveloped viruses have a bi-segmented ambisense RNA genome that encodes four proteins. All Mammarenavirus identified to date share a common dependency on myristoylation: the addition of the C14 myristic acid on the N-terminal G2 residue on two of their proteins. The myristoylation of the Z matrix protein is required for viral particle budding, while the myristoylation of the signal peptide to the envelope glycoproteins is important for the entry mechanism. Using Mopeia virus as a model, we cha

Acute Hemorrhagic Rectal Ulcer Presenting With Severe Lower Gastrointestinal Bleeding: A Case Report of an Emerging Entity.

Acute hemorrhagic rectal ulcer (AHRU) is a rare but potentially life-threatening condition. We present the case of a 74-year-old man who developed sudden massive hematochezia and hypotension during hospitalization for fever of unknown origin. He was known to have alcohol-related liver cirrhosis, hypoalbuminemia and coronary artery disease (CAD) and was on daily aspirin. He was transfused and transferred to intensive care. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) revealed no abnormalities, while colonoscopy showed two deep round ulcers in the distal rectum, one of which was spurting blood, promptly and
