The case is reported of a 39-year-old pregnant woman who presented with fever, abdominal complaints, and diarrhea. Laboratory investigation revealed mononucleosis in the peripheral blood. All microbiological studies were negative, with the exception of finding cytomegalovirus (CMV). Lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV), a sexually transmitted disease, is caused by certain immunotypes of Chlamydia trachomatis. Proctitis due to LGV may be histologically indistinguishable from Crohn's disease of the rectum, thereby creating a diagnostic and therapeutic dilemma. Ulceractive colitis, a chronic diffuse inflammatory disease affecting the mucosa of the colon and rectum, is characterized by ulcerations with bleeding, mucosal crypt abscesses, and inflammatory pseudopolyps. Classically, it begins in the rectosigmoid but often extends to involve the entire colon. It is uncommon to find segmental involvement sparing the rectosigmoid.A case of segmental ulcerative colitis is presented with a brief comparison of segmental ulcerative colitis and segmental Crohn's colitis.

The effect of total parenteral nutrition on a group of thirty-four patients with inflammatory bowel disease over the past three and a half years was reviewed. Of forty-nine consecutive patients who underwent subtotal colectomy for inflammatory disease of the colon, 73.5 per cent required subsequent combined abdominoperineal resection of the retained rectum and only two patients had successful ileoproctostomy.
