Coronary Artery Disease and Gallbladder Inflammatory Pseudopolyps.

Axial MR image demonstrating multiple small gallbladder polypoid lesions characterized by contrast enhancement in a 78-year-old male hospitalized for acute chest pain due to coronary artery disease who showed fever and emesis during hospitalization and had signs of acute acalculous cholecystitis at computed tomography. Given the overall clinical conditions and the MR features, the inflammatory origin of the polyps was considered. The patient underwent cholecystectomy and the histological diagnosis of gallbladder inflammatory pseudopolyps was confirmed. This rare entity represents 5-10% of all

Increased risk of colorectal neoplasia in inflammatory bowel disease patients with post-inflammatory polyps: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients with post-inflammatory polyps (PIPs) may carry an increased risk of colorectal neoplasia (CRN) including dysplasia and cancer. Current guidelines recommend active colonoscopy follow-up for these patients. However, the evidence for guidelines is still poor. In addition, some recent high-quality reports present a different view, which challenges the current guidelines. We hypothesize that IBD patients with PIPs are at increased risk of CRN. AIM: To evaluate the risk of CRN in IBD patients with and without PIPs. METHODS: A systematic search

Patients with inflammatory bowel disease and post-inflammatory polyps have an increased risk of colorectal neoplasia: A meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Longstanding intestinal inflammation increases the risk of colorectal neoplasia in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Accurately predicting the risk of colorectal neoplasia in the early stage is still challenging. Therefore, identifying visible warning markers of colorectal neoplasia in IBD patients is the focus of the current research. Post-inflammatory polyps (PIPs) are visible markers of severe inflammation under endoscopy. To date, there is controversy regarding the necessity of strengthened surveillance strategies for IBD patients with PIPs. AIM: To determine whe

NF1-Associated Inflammatory Polyp of the Colon: First Report of a Sporadic Case.

"Juvenile-like (hyperplastic/inflammatory) mucosal polyp" is a term proposed for rare benign mesenchymal lesions of the gastro-intestinal tract so far reported only in patients with type 1 neurofibromatosis (NF1). We report here a first sporadic case of NF1-associated mucosal inflammatory polyp of the colon. The diagnosis was made in a 53-year old female patient with a large polypoid tumor of the cecum. The lesion was predominantly mucosal, made of fibroblast-like cells associated with inflammatory infiltrates rich in eosinophils and containing entrapped, distorted epithelial glands, responsib

The role of flexible bronchoscopy in children with Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia.

PURPOSE: To explore the effectiveness of flexible bronchoscopy in pediatric Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia (MPP). METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included children with MPP admitted between 2016 and 2019 in Shanghai. Tracheobronchial manifestations, etiologic findings, therapeutic effect, and health-economic indicators were assessed in bronchoscopy (plus bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL)) and non-bronchoscopy group. We used propensity-score matching and multivariable logistic regression to investigate the effect of bronchoscopy and BAL on disease recovery. RESULTS: In 900 children with

The incidence of significant pathology in patients presenting with benign-appearing unilateral nasal polyps.

OBJECTIVE: The presentation of unilateral nasal polyps traditionally necessitates histological evaluation for a neoplasm. This study sought to determine the rates of significant pathology in patients presenting with benign-appearing unilateral nasal polyps, to inform practice. METHOD: All patients who underwent nasal polypectomy for benign-appearing unilateral nasal polyps over a 13-year period were included. RESULTS: A total of 77 patients were included. On histology, 60 cases (77.9 per cent) were found to be inflammatory polyps. Thirteen cases were neoplastic, of which 11 (14.3 per cent) w

Association Between Low Muscle Mass and Gastric Hyperplastic and Inflammatory Polyps in Chinese Asymptomatic Adult Males.

BACKGROUND: Gastric polyp is an abnormally proliferative or neoplastic growth of the gastric mucosa, with a degree of tendency to transform into gastric cancer. Lack of physical activity that is significantly related to low muscle mass (LMM) and muscle strength has been identified to be associated with gastric polyps. In this study, we examine the association of LMM and different histological types of gastric polyps among Chinese asymptomatic adult males. METHODS: In total, 1,742 male adults undergoing bioelectrical impedance analysis and upper gastrointestinal endoscopies were included. Univ

Chemoprevention of Colitis-Associated Dysplasia or Cancer in Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

The association between inflammatory bowel disease and colorectal cancer is well known. Although the overall incidence of inflammatory bowel disease has declined recently, patients with this disease still have a 1.7-fold increased risk of colorectal cancer. The risk factors for developing colorectal cancer include extensive colitis, young age at diagnosis, disease duration, primary sclerosing cholangitis, chronic colonic mucosal inflammation, dysplasia lesion, and post-inflammatory polyps. In patients with inflammatory bowel disease, control of chronic inflammation and surveillance colonoscopi

Case Report: Massive Hemoptysis From a Spontaneously Regression Inflammatory Bronchial Polyp.

BACKGROUND: Bronchial inflammatory polyps are usually treated by surgical operation or with steroids and/or antibiotics, and it is quite rare that such polys spontaneously disappear without any treatment. This report shows a rare case with a bronchial inflammatory polyp which caused massive hemoptysis but spontaneously disappeared without any treatment. CASE PRESENTATION: A 66-year-old man with type 2 diabetes mellitus and a history of cough and asthma suddenly developed massive hemoptysis while smoking and was brought to an emergency room in our institution. In bronchoscopy on admission, a p

A rare case of inflammatory polyp in the common bile duct with cholangitis.

The diagnosis of bile duct tumors can be difficult at times. A transpapillary bile duct biopsy findings with endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography sometimes contradict diagnostic imaging findings. In bile duct tumors, inflammatory polyps in the extrahepatic bile duct are relatively rare with extrahepatic cholangitis. The disease's clinical relevance, including its natural history and prognosis, is not always clear. We show here a rare case of an inflammatory polyp in the common bile duct. A 69-year-old woman with abdominal pain was diagnosed with cholangitis. The findings of contrast-

CD163 Immunohistochemical "Circle Sign" Staining Pattern Differentiates Sinonasal Papillomas From Morphologically Similar Non-neoplastic Lesions.

Sinonasal papillomas are a diverse group of benign epithelial neoplasms of the sinonasal tract. Inverted papilloma, in particular, must be distinguished from other lesions with no malignant potential. The aim of this study was to distinguish sinonasal papillomas from morphologically similar lesions using CD163 immunostaining. Cases from a 19-year period were identified. These included 49 inverted, 10 exophytic, and 12 oncocytic papillomas, 21 chronic sinusitides with squamous metaplasia, 27 inflammatory polyps, 5 verrucae vulgares, 5 respiratory epithelial adenomatoid hamartomas, and 6 DEK::AF

Respiratory epithelial adenomatoid hamartomas of the sinonasal tract: A histopathological analysis of 50 patients.

Respiratory epithelial adenomatoid hamartoma (REAH) is a benign lesion of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. Here, we report the clinicopathological characteristics of REAH identified in 2065 cases with nasal/paranasal polypoid lesions treated with endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) at our hospital from 2008 to 2021. Cases including the olfactory area were reviewed and 50 patients of REAH were identified pathologically (50/2065, 2.4%). The average age was 58.9 years old and the male/female ratio was 45/5. Grossly, REAH showed a whitish surface and elastic firm consistency. The histopathologic

Obstructive Giant Inflammatory Polyposis as a First Manifestation of Crohn's Disease: A Case Report.

Colonic inflammatory polyps (pseudopolyps) are common feature of inflammatory bowel diseases. They usually do not grow excessively, rarely reaching more than 15 mm in size, at which point they are termed giant inflammatory polyps. Clinical presentation of these polyps can vary greatly, ranging from being completely asymptomatic, usually detected incidentally, to abdominal cramps, rectal bleeding or intestinal obstruction. More importantly, giant inflammatory polyps can be easily mistaken for colonic malignancy, although without having malignant potential themselves. These polyps rarely regress

Cap Polyposis: An Elusive Diagnosis in a Pediatric Patient Successfully Managed With Endoscopic Treatment.

Cap polyposis is a rare condition of the rectum or sigmoid colon manifested by inflammatory polyps covered by a thick layer of fibrinopurulent mucus. This condition typically presents as mucoid diarrhea and rectal bleeding, and patients are often prescribed antibiotics (such as those for Helicobacter pylori), steroids, infliximab, or aminosalicylates. Surgical management is an option for unresponsive disease, but endoscopic management has been rarely reported. For cases of cap polyposis in which conservative medical management fails, wide-field endoscopic mucosal resection is a viable option.
