Autologous white blood cells were labelled with Indium 111 (111In wbc) and reinjected into 18 children with suspected infection and 10 children with suspected inflammatory bowel disease aged 5 weeks to 15 years. In addition two immunosuppressed children with suspected infection received donor 111In wbc. Gamma camera images were obtained between one and four hours and 20 and 24 hours. Localized colitis cystica profunda developed in a fibrotic radiation-induced colonic stricture 17 years after pelvic radiation for squamous carcinoma of cervix. This uncommon pathologic entity must be distinguished from invasive adenocarcinoma of colon, and colonic radiation injury should be included with other conditions associated with colitis cystica profunda.

The records of 88 patients with radiation-induced proctosigmoidosis seen over an eight year period were reviewed. Eighty-four (95 per cent) had been irradiated for a gynaecological malignancy. A new type of endoscope combines the advantages of the narrow-calibre paediatric endoscopes and the stable-shaft regular endoscopes. This is achieved by reduction of the distal diameter from 13 mm to 9,5 mm with a conical transition between both parts. Fungal cultures, unstained smears and histological assessment of endoscopically obtained particles from ulcers in rectum, colon or terminal ileum were obtained in a prospective study of possible fungal infection in 78 patients with colitis of various aetiologies (Crohn's disease - 46; ulcerative colitis - 21; infectious colitis - 5; ischaemic colitis - 2; radiation colitis - 1; non-classifiable colitis - 3). Positive fungal culture was obtained in 13 patients (16.7%). The germ count was low (2--8 colonies per biopsy piece). The demonstrated fungi were almost exclusively Candida or Torulopsis.

Inflammatory bowel disease is a relatively common spectrum of disorders of the gastrointestinal tract in women of the reproductive age group. Although Crohn's disease may decrease fertility, female reproductive ability is normal in UC. In general, IBD is not a contraindication to pregnancy or vaginal delivery and is not an indication for therapeutic abortion. The use of the colonoscope to evaluate the cause of rectal bleeding in a series of 2200 patients has been reviewed. The most common cause of bleeding in this series was found to be neoplastic polyps, which were present in 723 patients (32 per cent). Colonic carcinoma was detected as the source of the bleeding in 425 cases (19 per cent).
