An epidemic of dengue haemorrhagic fever/dengue shock syndrome occurred in Chennai, South India in 1989 during and following the rainy season. Sixty-nine infants and children admitted to the Institute of Child Health and Hospital for Children with a brief febrile illness associated with skin and mucous membrane bleeds and/or shock were studied. Forty-nine had antibodies to dengue viruses. The specific serotype of the virus responsible could not be identified owing to cross-reacting antibodies. Primary infection occurred in 11 cases, secondary infection in 17 cases, antibodily titres were indic

OBJECTIVE: To confirm an epidemic outbreak of Dengue virus in the city of Santa Cruz, Bolivia, and to determine the serotype of the virus, to estimate the rate of attack and the proportion of symptomatic infections.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: In March 1997, a seroepidemiological survey was conducted with random sampling in a central district of the city of Santa Cruz, Bolivia. Information on recent acute illness and febrile episodes was gathered, and venous blood samples were obtained. Levels of antidengue IgM were determined by MAC Elisa and the virus was typified with RT-PCR.
RESULTS: IgM antib

Nitric oxide (NO) is a multifunctional molecule that is involved in citotoxic as well as citoprotective processes, it's synthesis is highly regulated by the cell because an alteration in NO production is associated with a variety of pathologies, such as Septic, Anaphylactic and Hemorrhagic Shock. The clinical feature of dengue virus infection has a spectrum that goes from mild, dengue fever, to a severe disease, dengue hemorrhagic fever/dengue shock. Here, some evidences are discussed that links NO with the pathology of the severe disease cause by dengue virus.

The Dengue epidemic in Venezuela has increase dramatically during the last years. There is a rise in the number of cases as well as in the severity of the disease. The fact that it circulates more than one serotype of the virus (1, 2 and 4), from the four described turn us into a hyperendemic region. The symptoms produce in the patient as a consequence of the infection with the Dengue virus, varies from a mild fever to the severe Dengue Shock. Here, the characteristics and classification of the different clinical manifestation are presented as well as the basic procedures in the management of

Outbreaks of Dengue/Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever have been occurring in the National Capital Territory (NCT) Delhi from time to time. A massive outbreak of Dengue/DHF causing considerable mortality occurred in 1996 in the NCT, Delhi. Since this outbreak regular entomological surveillance has been instituted, for timely preventive action against Dengue/DHF. The Central Cross Checking Organisation (CCO) of the National Malaria Eradication Programme cross-checks Aedes surveillance activities in Delhi. In this paper we present our experiences in entomological surveillance in relation Dengue, to share

The pathogenesis of dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF) is not well understood. In the absence of predictive clinical or biological criteria, the management of DHF patients remains difficult. The role played by cytokines in the occurrence of DHF has been suggested by several authors. In this study, we determined the plasma levels of tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF alpha) and transforming growth factor beta-1 (TGF beta-1) in 52 children with laboratory-confirmed dengue virus infection admitted to hospital during the recent dengue 2 outbreak in French Polynesia. Thirty-three children were classifi

A major outbreak of dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) affected more than 10,000 people in Delhi and neighboring areas in 1996. The outbreak started in September, peaked in October to November and lasted till early December. The clinical and laboratory data of 515 adult patients admitted to Lok Nayak Hospital, New Delhi were reviewed. Fever (100%), myalgias and malaise (96%), abdominal pain (10.2%) and vomiting (8.7%) were the prominent presenting features. Hemorrhagic manifestations were seen in all patients- a positive tourniquet test (21.2%), scattered petechial rash (23.07%), confluent rash (2

Sera were collected from a total of 122 children, comprising 117 cases with undifferentiated fever and 5 cases with dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF), during June to September 1994 in Karachi, Pakistan. Sera were tested by the IgM-capture ELISA using dengue type 1 (D1), dengue type 2 (D2), West Nile (WN), and Japanese encephalitis (JE) viral antigens. Among 92 single sera from undifferentiated fever cases, IgM antibodies were detected in 5 cases by D1, 8 cases by D2, and 5 cases by WN antigens, respectively. Corresponding number of positives among 25 paired sera from undifferentiated fever cases

A dengue outbreak has recently hit the Indian capital. We studied the clinical profile of adult patients. Five hundred and sixty patients of dengue infection were admitted in a specially created ward according to the criteria laid down by WHO. Haematemesis (28.28%), epistaxis (26.78%) and malena (14.28%) were some of the common presentations. Similarly lymphadenopathy, especially cervical (30.89%), palatal rashes (26.96%) and hepatomegaly (23.75%) were the most commonly encountered findings on physical examination. Most of the cases were of dengue fever with haemorrhage and only 2.5% cases wer

Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral infection that in recent years has become a major international public health concern. Dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF), first recognized in Southeast Asia in the 1950s, is today a leading cause of childhood death in many countries. The pathogenesis of this illness is poorly understood, mainly because there are no laboratory or animal models of disease. We have studied the genetic relationships of dengue viruses of serotype 2, one of four antigenically distinct dengue virus groups, to determine if viruses obtained from cases of less severe dengue fever (DF) have

Dengue fever, a very old disease, has reemerged in the past 20 years with an expanded geographic distribution of both the viruses and the mosquito vectors, increased epidemic activity, the development of hyperendemicity (the cocirculation of multiple serotypes), and the emergence of dengue hemorrhagic fever in new geographic regions. In 1998 this mosquito-borne disease is the most important tropical infectious disease after malaria, with an estimated 100 million cases of dengue fever, 500,000 cases of dengue hemorrhagic fever, and 25,000 deaths annually. The reasons for this resurgence and eme

About two-thirds of the world's population live in areas infested with dengue vectors, mainly Aedes aegypti. All four dengue viruses are circulating, sometimes simultaneously, in most of these areas. It is estimated that up to 80 million persons become infected annually although marked underreporting results in the notification of much smaller figures. Currently dengue is endemic in all continents except Europe and epidemic dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF) occurs in Asia, the Americas and some Pacific islands. The incidence of DHF is much greater in the Asian countries than in other regions. In

Hemorrhagic fever (HF) has been widespread in Cambodia and thought to be due to dengue virus although laboratory confirmation has been lacking. Between 1980 and 1995, 49,420 cases of HF and 3,032 deaths were reported. Cases increased during this period; large epidemics of HF occurred every two to three years. In 1995 there were 10,208 cases of HF with 424 deaths. Over a two day period in August 1995, 40 consecutive cases were investigated at the National Pediatric Hospital in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. All 40 cases were confirmed as dengue by virus identification and/or serology. Mean age was 6.5 y

Repeated outbreaks of a suspected viral fever in Chirimiri colliery area, Madhya Pradesh were reported since 1990. The area consists of an agglomeration of sprawling settlements at varying altitudes of 816 to 890 m and it has partial sylvan cover. During a 1992 outbreak 25 patients' sera were tested, of which 13 showed seropositivity to dengue (DEN) by MAC-ELISA test; DEN-2 was isolated from Aedes aegypti collected from two of the eight settlements of the area. The principal vector, Ae. aegypti, was prevalent in all the settlements studied; Breteau indices (BI) varied between 2.5 and 125.0; ad

Mosquito adults and larvae were collected from dengue high risk areas and transported to the laboratory for identification. Identified mosquitos were pooled according to the species, date and locality and stored at -70 degrees C. A total of 1,385 pools of Aedes albopictus and 267 pools of Ae. Aegypti were collected from major towns in 12 states in Peninsular Malaysia. Virus isolation was carried out using cell culture (C6/36 clone) of Ae. albopictus and detection of dengue virus by the peroxidase anti-peroxidase staining. All positive isolations were further re-confirmed by the reverse transcr

The aim of the study reported here was to demonstrate that dengue hemorrhagic fever occurs in Puerto Rico, that it is underreported, and that this underreporting is due partly to underdiagnosis in hospitals. Surveillance for severe dengue identified 986 hospitalizations for suspected dengue in 1990-1991. At the time, on the basis of available clinical and laboratory data, the surveillance system routinely identified 20 DHF cases, including three with dengue shock syndrome (DSS). Our subsequent review of these 986 patients' hospital records identified 102 whose records supported a clinical diag

A study on treatment seeking behavior of dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) patients was made from 184 clinically diagnosed patients in three hospitals: Children's Hospital, Bangkok; Suphan Buri Provincial Hospital, Suphan Buri Province and Don Chedi Community Hospital in the district of Don Chedi, Suphan Buri Province. The information was collected by interviewing the patients' caretakers while they were attending the patients in the hospitals, using a series of closed- and open-ended questions. Based on the first place of treatment, five patterns of treatment seeking behavior were identified, th
