Predicting plasma leakage in adult patients with dengue using clinical and laboratory markers at the time of emergency department presentation.

BACKGROUND: Plasma leakage is a key pathophysiological feature of severe dengue and typically precedes clinical deterioration. However, current diagnostic criteria rely on warning signs that often appear after leakage has begun. OBJECTIVES: To identify early clinical and laboratory predictors of ultrasound-confirmed plasma leakage in adult dengue patients and evaluate their association with adverse clinical outcomes. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of 507 adult patients with laboratory-confirmed dengue admitted to a tertiary Malaysian hospital between January 2022 and December 2023. Pl

CD5L as a potential immunomodulator in dengue severity.

BACKGROUND OBJECTIVES: CD5L (CD5 antigen-like) is a secreted glycoprotein involved in immune regulation, macrophage polarization, and lipid metabolism. While its role in inflammatory and bacterial diseases has been described, its function in viral infections such as dengue virus (DENV) infection remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate serum CD5L levels in dengue-infected individuals and investigate its association with serological markers and disease severity. A cross-sectional study involving dengue-positive and dengue-negative individuals was conducted to compare serum CD5L concentrati

In Silico Optimization of a Non-Invasive Optical Sensor for Hemoconcentration Monitoring in Dengue Fever Management.

Severe Dengue fever can cause Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF), a life-threatening condition characterized by plasma leakage and hemoconcentration. A hematocrit (Hct) rise of ≥20% is a key indicator for medical intervention, but current monitoring is invasive and intermittent. This study aims to determine the optimal design parameters for a non-invasive optical sensor to continuously monitor hemoconcentration. We developed a high-fidelity Monte Carlo model of light transport in a multi-layered skin model, with the epidermis set to a 5% melanin volume fraction (Fitzpatrick type II/III). To ensure

Dengue's Clinical Course in One of Colombia's Most Endemic Areas: Impact of Endemic and Epidemic Periods.

Dengue is a viral disease with a broad spectrum of clinical manifestations. Its severity is associated with risk factors such as periods of endemicity, although the extent of this contribution is unclear. In the present study, the characteristics of the clinical course and differences in the occurrence of severe and lethal outcomes were assessed by the degree of endemicity in patients with dengue treated in health institutions in Cali, Colombia, between 2019 and 2022. A longitudinal, observational-historical, single-cohort study was conducted. Analysis involved evaluating clinical complication

ECG changes and their utility in adult Vietnamese patients with non-severe dengue.

BACKGROUND: Dengue may affect the heart, manifesting as asymptomatic electrocardiographic (ECG) abnormalities to fulminant myocarditis. The role of routine ECG monitoring in dengue management remains unclear. We, therefore, studied ECG changes in patients with non-severe dengue. METHODS: In this observational study, we performed and interpreted 12-lead ECGs (admission, discharge and follow up) on hospitalised Vietnamese adults with confirmed dengue and measured the PR, QRS, and Fridericia-corrected QT intervals (QTcF). RESULTS: A total of 330 ECGs were performed in 136 patients (64 females; me

Epitope dynamics and antigenic shifts in dengue virus serotype 2 cosmopolitan genotype with structural changes in Bangladesh from 2017 to 2023.

Dengue Virus Serotype 2 (DENV-2) is increasingly impacting public health, especially in South and Southeast Asia. Bangladesh faced its most severe dengue outbreak in 2023, reporting 318,623 cases and over 1,700 deaths, with the DENV-2 Cosmopolitan genotype responsible for 70.2% of cases. To better understand this event, we utilized in silico methods to explore mutational trends and epitope dynamics in global and Bangladeshi sequences from 2017 to 2023. The study aimed to provide insights into viral evolution and hypothesize how specific mutations might theoretically affect immune recognition.

Dengue haemorrhagic fever: an evaluation of host innates immune factors in hepatic lesions and their correlation with immunopathogenesis.

Dengue fever challenges public health worldwide. The numerous factors associated with dengue fever severity and mortality risk include host characteristics such as patient age, comorbid conditions, previous dengue virus (DENV) infections, and biochemical biomarkers. Type I IFNs are essential cytokines in orchestrating innate and adaptive immune responses against viral invasion, and their regulation is mediated by IRF-2, which prevents excessive IFN expression. In vitro studies have shown DENV evasion strategies that affect IFN-I production but few have considered the in-situ interrelationship

Development of an eco-friendly larvicidal agent from Chrozophora oblongifolia against the dengue disease vector: antimicrobial and phytochemical analysis.

Dengue fever, a viral disease caused by the dengue virus, is transmitted via the bite of Aedes aegypti mosquito. Dengue is an endemic disease in more than a hundred countries. It is a global public health concern with 390 million infections occurring every year. An estimated 500,000 of these cases develop into severe dengue, resulting in approximately 25,000 deaths annually. The failure of chemical insecticides to combat and control mosquitoes, due to widespread resistance, creates an urgent need to search for effective natural alternatives. Chrozophora oblongifolia is an herbal and medicinal
