Nutritional Innovations in Functional Foods: Exploring Postbiotics for Gut and Vascular Health Enhancement.

The exploration of microbiome-targeted interventions in functional foods has accelerated, with postbiotics emerging as a compelling alternative to probiotics. Defined as non-viable microbial cells or their metabolic products, postbiotics demonstrate diverse bioactivities, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory effects. These attributes enable modulation of the gut-vascular axis, a critical interface influencing systemic inflammation and cardiovascular risk. Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), bioactive peptides, and microbial enzymes are among the most studied postbiotics

The gastrointestinal KATP-ERK signaling axis: Molecular mechanisms, pharmacological opportunities, and emerging translational technologies.

BACKGROUND: ATP-sensitive potassium channels are metabolic sensors that couple intracellular nucleotide availability to membrane excitability, calcium signaling, mitochondrial function, and cell survival. Growing evidence identifies KATP channels as essential regulators of gastrointestinal physiology. They are expressed in smooth muscle, enteric neurons, interstitial cells of Cajal, epithelial and enteroendocrine cells, microvascular cells, pericytes, and liver, where they contribute to motility, secretion, barrier integrity, nutrient sensing, vascular regulation, and mucosal protection. Cellular Crosstalk at the Gut-Liver Interface in Liver Cirrhosis: Epithelial Barrier Failure, Bacterial Translocation and Immune Activation as a Bidirectional Network.

The gut-liver axis is central to the systemic complications of liver cirrhosis, but it is usually described as a linear cascade in which barrier failure releases microbial products that activate a downstream immune response. This review proposes instead a four-compartment framework, in which the epithelial/barrier, innate immune, adaptive effector, and stromal-endothelial compartments-the last including the gut-vascular barrier-are treated as reciprocally interacting nodes, and pathological bacterial translocation is treated as both an input to and an output of the network rather than as its e

Exploring gut microbiome dysbiosis in vasculitis in adults: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Although studies have confirmed that disruptions in the gut microbiota (dysbiosis) contribute to the development of autoimmune disorders, the precise pathways through which the gut microbiota influences the onset and progression of vasculitis remain largely unknown. In recent years, research has increasingly concentrated on assessing the contribution of the gut microbiota to vasculitis. This systematic study sought to assess the dominant gut microbiota profiles in vasculitis patients and compare them to those of healthy individuals. METHODS: The Cochrane methodology was us

Time-Restricted Feeding Delays Cardiovascular Aging by Increasing Acetic Acid Through Remodeling Gut Microbiota.

Time-restricted feeding (TRF) restricts food intake to daily windows, yet its efficacy against vascular aging and underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we demonstrate that TRF attenuates angiotension II -induced accelerated vascular aging by reshaping gut microbiota, stabilizing microbial diversity, and elevating the Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio. TRF preserved intestinal barrier integrity, upregulated tight junction proteins (Occludin, ZO-1, MUC2), reduced serum lipopolysaccharide, and suppressed systemic inflammation. These benefits translated into alleviated hypertension, aortic stif

Microbiota-Brain Interactions in Dementia: Role of Diet in Neuroinflammation.

Aging is one of the risk factors for dementia, a group of neurocognitive disorders characterized by a progressive decline in cognitive function. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most prevalent, followed by vascular dementia (VaD). Other subtypes, such as frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and Lewy body disease (LBD), are less common but exhibit distinctive symptoms related to motor deficits, behavioral changes, and neuropsychiatric disturbances. Each type of dementia is associated with specific pathological features, such as amyloid plaques in AD and tau tangles in FTD. Recent research highlights th

Context-dependent roles of resistin-like molecule β in mucosal defense and inflammatory diseases.

Resistin-like molecule β (RELMβ) is a cysteine-rich secreted protein predominantly produced by intestinal goblet cells and regulated by microbial colonization, epithelial transcriptional programs, and immune signals. At the intestinal mucosal surface, recombinant murine and human RELMβ permeabilize susceptible bacterial membranes, while genetic studies in mice support its role in maintaining spatial separation between the microbiota and the epithelium. Murine studies further implicate RELMβ in defense against selected gastrointestinal nematodes, epithelial repair, intestinal inflammation, and

Integrated molecular, immunological, oxidative stress, and histopathological evaluation of Ascaridia galli infection in chickens.

Ascaridia galli (A. galli) is an important intestinal nematode of chickens, but the host immune, oxidative, and pathological responses associated with natural infection remain incompletely characterized. This study aimed to provide an integrated molecular, immunological, oxidative, and histopathological evaluation of naturally occurring A. galli infection in Baladi chickens in Cairo, Egypt. A total of 200 Baladi chickens from farmers' households in rural areas of Cairo Governorate were examined between January and June 2026. Gastrointestinal helminths were recovered and identified, and 40 adul

Spatial multi-omics-guided drug development in inflammatory bowel disease: from mucosal immune niches to precision therapy.

Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis are now treated with an expanding set of biologics and small molecules, yet treatment selection remains largely empirical. Primary non-response, secondary loss of response, incomplete mucosal healing, fibrostenosis, and fistulizing disease show that conventional clinical, endoscopic, and bulk molecular markers do not capture how disease is organized within tissue. This review argues that the inflamed intestine is better viewed as a set of spatially structured mucosal immune niches rather than as uniform inflammation, with epithelial, myeloid, lymphoid, st

A case report: an unusual case of ulcerative intestinal IgG4-related disease with clinical features overlapping with probable intestinal Behcet's disease.

BACKGROUND: IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is a systemic fibroinflammatory condition characterized by IgG4-positive plasma cell infiltration, typically presenting with organ enlargement or tumor-like masses. Luminal gastrointestinal involvement is rare, and ulcerative lesions are even less common. Overlap syndromes of IgG4-RD with other immune disorders have been reported, but overlap of its clinical features with those of intestinal Behcet's disease has not been documented. Functional roles of Keratin 6A in disease pathogenesis across cancer and skin disorders.

Keratin 6A (KRT6A) is an epithelial-specific type II keratin localized within cytoskeletal intermediate filaments and functions in cooperation with KRT16/17 to maintain epidermal homeostasis and tissue repair. Accumulating evidence highlights its multifaceted roles in cancer. Aberrant KRT6A expression promotes cell cycle progression, epithelial-mesenchymal transition, migration, and invasion, thereby driving tumor initiation and metastasis, although tumor-suppressive effects have been observed in specific contexts. Mechanistically, KRT6A regulates adhesion, cytoskeletal remodeling, and critica

Small Bowel Lesions and Bleeding Risk in Hemodialysis Patients: A Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal bleeding is very common among hemodialysis patients. This high bleeding risk is caused by uremic platelet dysfunction, vascular fragility, intradialytic hemodynamic instability, and widespread antithrombotic therapy. Small bowel lesions, especially angiodysplasias, constitute a significant but often overlooked source of recurrent or occult hemorrhage while conventional endoscopy frequently fails to identify these lesions. OBJECTIVES: Investigation of small bowel lesions in hemodialysis patients and identification of bleeding risk of this vulnerable population. DE

Integrative analysis of the gut-liver-heart axis in coronary artery disease: From chronic metabolic dysbiosis to acute cardiogenic shock.

The complex interplay between chronic metabolic disorders and acute cardiovascular decompensation represents a critical frontier in cardiology. This integrative research program conducted at Chongqing Medical University systematically examines the gut-liver-heart axis across the cardiovascular disease spectrum through three interconnected studies. First, a case-control investigation of coronary artery disease (CAD) patients with and without nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) revealed distinct intestinal dysbiosis patterns characterized by increased Coprococcus and Veillonella alongside d

Optimized Graph Structures for Calibrating Graph Neural Networks with Out-of-Distribution Nodes.

BACKGROUND: Bone autograft options may be limited in revision spinal fusion cases. Reconstruction of the iliac bone graft (IBG) donor site with cancellous bone allograft allows for reharvest for patients who subsequently have another fusion. This study examined viability of the reconstructed IBG (RIBG) donor sites. Secondarily, we assessed the feasibility of whether the RIBG sites could be reharvested for obtaining a successful arthrodesis for a secondary fusion. METHODS: Prospectively collected data of 154 consecutive lumbar revision fusions were reviewed, of which 17 cases had their IBG don

Association between frailty and outcomes in emergency department patients requiring emergency general surgery: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Frailty, a state of increased vulnerability, is a well-established risk factor of adverse outcomes following surgery. While its prognostic value has been demonstrated in various contexts, data are lacking on its impact in emergency general surgery within the Swiss healthcare system. This study aimed to evaluate the association between frailty and outcomes among older patients undergoing emergency general surgery in a Swiss tertiary hospital. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study including patients aged 65 years or over who underwent emergency general surgery between J

Gut microbiota dysregulation in dementia: Molecular mechanism linking the gut-brain axis to neurodegeneration.

Dementia is a progressive neurodegenerative syndrome characterised by cognitive decline, synaptic dysfunction, and neuronal loss. In recent years, growing attention has been given to the role of the gut-brain axis in neurodegenerative disease. Emerging evidence indicates that changes in gut microbiota composition and metabolic activity may affect various systemic processes that contribute to dementia. This review examines the current evidence linking gut microbiota imbalance to dementia through mechanisms involving immune regulation, metabolic signalling, and neuronal stability. Clinical studi

Intestinal blood vessel-associated macrophages and gut-vascular barrier dysfunction in cirrhosis.

BACKGROUND: Bacterial translocation in cirrhosis can trigger infection and hepatic decompensation, leading to systemic inflammation, organ failure and increased mortality. These infections often originate from the gastrointestinal tract after bacteria breach the intestinal barrier and disseminate to systemic sites. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we explore the mechanisms underlying intestinal barrier dysfunction in cirrhosis using an experimental cirrhosis model and patient-derived intestinal biopsies. DESIGN: We developed a murine model of cirrhosis through chronic administration of carbon tetra

Gut microbiota and atherosclerosis.

Atherosclerosis reflects a chronic inflammatory process of arteries. The origin of chronic vascular inflammation has been associated over a long time primarily with lipid disorders, but evidence from the past years has suggested that lipid-independent pathways are also involved. Recent research has demonstrated that the gastrointestinal microbiota has an impact on the development of atherosclerosis. Many clinical studies have revealed that there exist altered gut microbiota and increased intestinal abundance of bacteria from the oral cavity in atherosclerosis-related disorders such as cardiova

Dynamic changes to the intestinal environment occur throughout recovery from experimental ischemic stroke.

Stroke survivors can experience a plethora of complications throughout their recovery that impair quality of life and impact neurological outcomes. Intestinal dysfunction is reported to occur rapidly following stroke in both humans and animal models and alterations such as reduced barrier integrity, lymphocyte loss and an altered microbiota have been suggested to contribute to increased brain injury. Despite the persistence of gastrointestinal symptoms in many stroke survivors, how the intestinal environment changes over the course of stroke recovery remains poorly understood. Here, we use an
