Systemic amyloid A amyloidosis secondary to chronic enteritis in a captive little owl (Athenenoctua).

A male little owl (Athene noctua), approximately 2 years old, collapsed and subsequently died. Grossly, there was hepatomegaly with minimal chalky white lesions on the serosal surface of the liver. The serosal surface of the intestines was also tan to chalky white. Histologically, amorphous eosinophilic material was deposited in the vascular walls and interstitium of many organs, including endoneurial microvessels and perivascular interstitium. These deposits were consistent with amyloid and positive for anti-serum amyloid A (SAA) antibody on immunohistochemical labelling. On mass spectrometry

Dietary Phosphorus and Metabolic Health in CKD and ESKD.

The contribution of dietary phosphate (P) in the pathogenesis of CKD-associated mineral bone disease and the management of P intake in patients with CKD are essential to slow down disease progression and improve patient outcomes. In patients with CKD, and most likely in the general population, P retention and overload can affect four critical aspects of the cardiovascular system: increased arterial BP, vascular and valvular calcification, and left ventricular hypertrophy. All of these factors contribute to increased cardiovascular risk and mortality. Intestinal absorption of P from a mixed die

Management of Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Risk in Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Current Perspectives.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a complex condition characterized by inflammation of the gastrointestinal system, encompassing Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Patients diagnosed with IBD have an increased risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. This heightened risk can be attributed to a combination of mechanisms, including traditional risk factors, chronic inflammation, intestinal dysbiosis, increased risk of thrombosis, and the use of certain medications such as corticosteroids. There are significant gaps in current knowledge, particularly regarding the management of risk

A New Insight on Atherosclerosis Mechanism and Lipid-Lowering Drugs.

Atherosclerosis (AS) is a chronic vascular disease primarily affecting large and medium-sized arteries, involving complex pathological mechanisms such as inflammatory responses, lipid metabolism disorders and vascular plaque formation. In recent years, several emerging research hotspots have appeared in the field of atherosclerosis, including gut microbiota, pyroptosis, ferroptosis, autophagy, cuproptosis, exosomes and non-coding RNA. Traditional lipid-lowering drugs play a crucial role in the treatment of AS but are not able to significantly reverse the pathological changes. This article aims

[Endovascular aortic repair in a patient with secondary aortoenteric fistula and critical lower limb ischemia].

The authors present successful treatment of a patient with aortoenteric fistula and chronic critical lower limb ischemia after previous aortobifemoral bypass grafting (ABF). Examination revealed intimate contact of inferior duodenal wall near proximal anastomosis and thrombosis of the right branch. The patient underwent hybrid surgery, i.e. unilateral endovascular repair and crossover replacement. Despite severe status upon admission and concomitant diseases, postoperative period was uneventful. The authors reviewed literature data regarding pathogenesis and diagnosis of secondary aortoenteric

Research progress of the intestinal axis in autologous arteriovenous fistula stenosis in maintenance hemodialysis patients.

The number of the patients treated with maintenance hemodialysis (HD) is increasing due to the increasing incidence of end stage renal disease (ESRD). Autologous arteriovenous fistula (AVF) is the preferable modality for long-term vascular access during HD. AVF stenosis is the main cause of AVF dysfunction in HD patients, but its mechanism has not been fully elucidated. Patients with ESRD often have various related complications due to intestinal microbiota disorders and their metabolites, and the intestinal axis reveals various metabolic disorders in patients with chronic kidney disease. This

The formation and function of calciprotein particles.

Vertebrate extracellular fluids lie below the threshold for spontaneous calcium phosphate (Ca-Pi) precipitation; yet, they remain supersaturated enough to foster crystal growth if unchecked. Calciprotein particles (CPP) and their smaller precursor calciprotein monomers (CPM) have emerged as fast-acting "mineral buffers" that mitigate abrupt local oversaturation. Although these complexes typically contain only trace amounts of Ca-Pi relative to total plasma levels, they exhibit remarkably high turnover kinetics, with clearance from the circulation within minutes, far outpacing hormonal loops th

The Efficacy of Ferroptosis Inhibition on Ischemia-reperfusion Injury of Abdominal Organs: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

Solid organ transplantation is hampered by complications that arise after ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI), a detrimental type of injury for which no adequate treatment options are available. Ferroptosis, an iron-dependent form of regulated cell death, is a major driver of IRI. This systematic review and meta-analysis summarizes the effects of pharmacological ferroptosis inhibition in abdominal organs in the setting of IRI. PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and Cochrane were searched for concepts "ferroptosis" and "IRI" in August 2023. To allow for meta-analyses, inhibitors were divided into dif

B-mode and contrast-enhanced ultrasonography for intestinal assessment in dogs: A review.

Ultrasound (USG) is a valuable diagnostic tool for evaluating the gastrointestinal tract of small animals, providing noninvasive and dynamic information. This review discusses intestinal evaluation in dogs using B-mode ultrasound and advanced contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) with microbubbles. B-mode USG allows the examination of the thickness and stratification of the intestinal wall, motility, and adjacent structures, such as lymph nodes and peritoneum to be examined. Reference values for intestinal wall thickness in dogs are based on body weight. The duodenum, jejunum, and ileum can be d

Exploring the Roles of Liver X Receptors in Lipid Metabolism and Immunity in Atherosclerosis.

Hypercholesterolemia causes atherosclerosis by inducing immune cell migration and chronic inflammation in arterial walls. Recent single-cell analyses reveal the presence of lipid-enriched foamy macrophages, as well as other macrophage subtypes, neutrophils, T cells, and B cells, in atherosclerotic plaques in both animal models and humans. These cells interact with each other and other cells, including non-immune cells such as endothelial cells and smooth muscle cells. They thereby regulate metabolic, inflammatory, phagocytic, and cell death processes, thus affecting the progression and stabili

A symbiotic filamentous gut fungus ameliorates MASH via a secondary metabolite-CerS6-ceramide axis.

The gut microbiota is known to be associated with a variety of human metabolic diseases, including metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH). Fungi are increasingly recognized as important members of this community; however, the role of fungal symbionts in metabolic diseases is unknown. We have systematically isolated and characterized gut fungi, identifying Fusarium foetens as an intestinal symbiotic filamentous fungus in mice. F. foetens reverses MASH progression in mouse models through an intestinal ceramide synthetase 6 (CerS6)-ceramide axis. Moreover, we identified FF-C1, a

A case of spinal epidural abscess, cauda equina syndrome, retroperitoneal abscess, aortic graft infection and aortoenteric fistula.

Low back pain is a common complaint in those presenting to the emergency department (ED), but only a small fraction of patients will have an emergent pathology. Specific features such as immunocompromised status, injection drug use, preexisting infection, fever, urinary or fecal retention or incontinence, perineal sensory changes, or lower extremity weakness should prompt the emergency physician to consider emergent pathology. We discuss the case of a 61-year-old male with extensive past medical history including thoracoabdominal aneurysm repair, aortoenteric fistula with chronic infection, an

Mechanisms through which laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy mitigates atherosclerosis risk: a focus on visceral adipose tissue.

Bariatric surgery is currently considered the key treatment method for patients with obesity and related complications. Among the various surgeries, laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) is the most widely used. Obesity is a multifactor chronic disease characterized by the accumulation of visceral adipose tissue (VAT), leading to susceptibility to cardiac metabolic diseases. Many mechanisms, including abnormal lipid metabolism, insulin resistance, inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, adipocytokine imbalance and inflammasome activation, have been identified as the basis for the relationship b

Nephropathy II Decoction Attenuates Renal Fibrosis via Regulating TLR4 and Gut Microbiota Along the Gut-Kidney Axis.

Nephropathy II Decoction (NED) is a widely used Chinese medicinal formulation for managing chronic kidney disease (CKD). Despite its extensive application, the precise mechanisms underlying its therapeutic effects remain poorly understood. This study aims to elucidate the role of NED in attenuating renal fibrosis and to explore its impact on the gut-kidney axis. The principal constituents of NED were analyzed using ultra-performance LC-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). A bilateral renal ischemia-reperfusion injury (bIRI) model was employed to induce fibrosis. RT-qPCR was utilized to asses

Systemic lupus erythematosus and atherosclerosis: immune pathways and the uncharted territory of gut microbiota and metabolism.

Patients with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) are significantly more susceptible to atherosclerosis, which may elevate their mortality risk. The review explores recent understandings of the origins and remedies for atherosclerosis associated with SLE. Our focus is particularly on the consequences of immune system disparities, interruptions in intestinal bacteria, and metabolic complications. The influence of SLE on atherosclerosis extends past usual risk elements, including processes specific to the disease. The list encompasses excessive immune cell activity, production of autoantibodies,

Portal vein thrombosis in the absence of cirrhosis: Diagnostic and therapeutic approach in clinical practice.

Non-cirrhotic non tumoral portal vein thrombosis is an entity of low prevalence but with a potential risk of developing complications of portal hypertension, which has a significant prognostic impact on patients. In the absence of liver cirrhosis, it is essential to rule out other chronic liver disease as well as local factors and prothrombotic conditions. Therefore, a thorough workup should be initiated immediately. In acute thrombosis, anticoagulation is the main treatment to prevent progression of thrombosis and development of intestinal ischemia. In chronic forms, however, close follow-up

Angiogenic Factors and Inflammatory Bowel Diseases.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, is characterized by chronic intestinal inflammation and impaired epithelial barrier function. Emerging evidence highlights the critical role of vascular remodeling and angiogenesis in IBD pathogenesis. This review explores the intricate relationship between blood vessels and the intestinal epithelial barrier, emphasizing how aberrant vascularization contributes to barrier dysfunction and disease progression. In IBD, excessive angiogenesis is driven by hypoxia, immune cell infiltration, and pro-inflammatory cyto
