Abdominal cocoon, also termed sclerosing encapsulating peritonitis, is an uncommon entity associated with formation of a fibro-collagenous membrane around intestinal loops resulting in intestinal obstruction. Most reported cases are idiopathic, but many other causes have been implicated in cocoon formation, including use of continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis, peritoneal tuberculosis, and connective tissue disease. However, peritoneal carcinomatosis is a rarely reported entity that causes this condition. Reported here are two cases of abdominal cocoon secondary to peritoneal carcinomatos

BACKGROUND: The management of obstructive left colon cancer (OLCC) remains debatable with the single-stage procedure of primary colonic anastomosis after cancer resection and on-table intracolonic lavage now being supported.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients with acute OLCC who were admitted between January 2008 and January 2015 were distributed into 5 different groups. Group ICI underwent emergency laparotomy for primary anastomosis following colonic resection and intraoperative colonic lavage; Group HP underwent emergency Hartmann's Procedure; Group CON consisted of patients treated by conserv

Postoperative ileus (POI) is an impairment of coordinated gastrointestinal (GI) motility that develops as a consequence of abdominal surgery and is a major factor contributing to patient morbidity and prolonged hospitalisation. Despite the availability of various options its treatment is still under debate. This review will focus on effect of Prucalopride (5-HT4 receptor agonist) on postoperative ileus based on the existing literature. Areas covered: A literature search of MEDLINE, EMBASE and COCHRANE Library was performed concerning topics related to the treatment of ileus with prucalopride.

Introduction. Congenital anomalies are important causes of childhood death, chronic illness, and disability in many countries. Congenital malformations are rapidly emerging as one of the major worldwide problems. Aim. To study the percentage of various congenital anomalies among the patients admitted in Department of Pediatric Surgery at a tertiary care centre over a period of four years from 2011 to 2015 in our centre. Results. Neural tube defects were found to be the most common anomalies in 24.3% of the children admitted. Other common anomalies were anorectal malformation (20.7%), tracheoes

PURPOSE: Atrophic visceral myopathy is a pathological diagnosis characterized by atrophy of the smooth muscle layers of the viscera with intact ganglia. Rarely, it can present acutely as an intestinal pseudo-obstruction. We describe a rare case report and explore how this diagnosis can be distinguished from other forms of intestinal obstruction.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 60-year-old male with a past medical history of hypothyroidism presented to the emergency department with a two-day history of worsening abdominal distention and pain associated with nausea and vomiting. Upon evaluation patient was

AIM: Obstructed defaecation (OD) has a high prevalence and high disease impact; however, patients often experience suboptimal management. This problem reflects the complex pathophysiology of OD as well as health service delivery factors. This study aimed to identify the factors that act as a barrier to effective management of OD as perceived by specialist colorectal surgeons treating this disorder.
METHOD: A postal questionnaire was administered to a bi-national sampling of colorectal specialists in Australia and New Zealand who were registered with their specialty society. Questions addresse

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this article is to assess the value of a large panel of clinical and MDCT variables in patients with suspected small-bowel obstruction (SBO) for predicting urgent surgical intervention (< 72 hours), bowel ischemia, and bowel resection.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: MDCT studies performed at admission for 179 nonconsecutive adults (mean age, 55.8 years; 86 men and 93 women) with suspected SBO were retrospectively reviewed by three board-certified radiologists. In addition to assessing individual CT features, each radiologist scored the overall likelihood of each main outcome

Chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction (CIPO) is a rare intestinal motility disorder with significant morbidity and mortality in pediatric patients. The diagnosis of CIPO is difficult, because it is clinically based on the symptoms and signs of bowel obstruction which are similar to the clinical manifestations of other gastrointestinal diseases like short bowel syndrome (SBS). Therefore, it is desirable to identify and establish new laboratory diagnostic markers for CIPO that are reliable and easily accessible. In our study we have identified the ratio of the urinary glutamine and glutamic acid

We report the case of a 7-year old girl presenting with sub-occlusive syndrome associated with acute paroxysmal abdominal pain at the level of the upper abdomen, vomiting and no evacuation of faeces. Physical examination showed discomfort with palpation of the upper abdomen. Abdominal ultrasound showed poorly limited intraperitoneal tissue formation without vascular features on doppler, exercising a mass effect on the neighborhood structures; mesenteric vessels were in their normal position. This mass on CT scan scorresponded to a well limited lipomatous formation exercising a mass effect on t

BACKGROUND: Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs) arise from a peripheral nerve or display nerve sheath differentiation. Most MPNSTs typically originate on the trunk, extremities, head, neck, and paravertebral regions. Gastrointestinal MPNSTs are rare entities with only 10 cases reported worldwide in the literatures.
CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we report the first Chinese case of a malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor of the distal ileum presenting as intussusception. A 53-year-old female patient without pathological antecedent for neurofibromatosis was admitted with pain in the r

Intussusception, which is seen rarely in adults, is defined as the pulling or invagination of a part of the intestine into another segment of the intestine. In this case report we present chronic retrograde jejunojejunal intussusception following gastric surgery with Braun's anastomosis in adult with video presentation. A 66-year-old woman, who had undergone gastric surgery 39 years ago and cholecystectomy 20 years ago, was admitted to our clinic with the complaints about weight loss, abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy (UGISE) was applied, and patient was tr

We report a case of a 10-month-old girl who presented with a 10-day history of emesis that became bilious on the last day. The initial evaluation suggested small bowel obstruction. An upper gastrointestinal study confirmed the normal location of the duodenojejunal junction with normal rotation and no evidence of midgut volvulus. Ultrasound (US) evaluation demonstrated two intraluminal lesions that do not follow the typical features of solid or cystic lesions. Two rubber balls were found at surgery to be responsible for the small bowel obstruction. Foreign body ingestion is common in children,

An acute sigmoid volvulus is due to the torsion of the sigmoid colon around its mesenteric axis. It mainly occurs in elderly patients and represents an abdominal emergency requiring urgent treatment. A 53-year-old male patient with severe craniocerebral injury and traumatic subarachnoidal bleeding 3 weeks prior presented on the ward with distended abdomen without abdominal pain, muscular defense, or resistances. He featured large volume diarrhea within the last few hours without signs of bleeding. A plain abdominal X-ray demonstrated a coffee bean sign indicating a sigmoid volvulus. A conseque

The cecum is the second part of the colon that is most commonly affected by the volvulus after sigmoid colon and before left corner and the transverse colon. This condition occurs in patients with abnormally mobile cecum. Volvulus is characterized by torsion or tilt. Clinically, it appears as bowel obstruction due to acute strangulation. Abdominal x-ray without treatment and abdominal CT scan are the radiological procedures of choice in the diagnosis of volvulus of the cecum. Treatment is based on emergency surgical excision of the cecum and of the terminal ileum. We report two cases of patien

William Arbuthnot Lane contributed to the advancement of many fields of orthopedics, otolaryngology, and general surgery. He is credited for his "no-touch technique" and the invention of long-handled instruments, some of which are still in use today, to minimize tissue handling. He is most well known for his hypothesis that slowing of gastric contents could cause a variety of ailments and this became known as Lane's disease. Although his surgical treatment of Lane's disease is now defunct, it advanced the surgical technique in colorectal surgery. It seems likely that some of Lane's "autointoxi

INTRODUCTION: Transverse colon volvulus is an uncommon cause of bowel obstruction in general. Predisposing factors are mental retardation, dysmotility disorders, chronic constipation and congenital megacolon.
CASE REPORT: We presented transverse colon volvulus in a 16-year-old boy with cerebral palsy. Chronic constipation in neurologicaly impaired patient was a risk factor predisposing to volvulus. The patient was admitted to the hospital with enormous abdominal distension and acute respiratory insufficiency. A boy was emergently taken to the operating room for exploratory laparotomy. During

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Intestinal fibrosis is a common complication of several enteropathies, with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) being the major cause. Intestinal fibrosis affects both ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, and no specific antifibrotic therapy exists. This review highlights recent developments in this area.
RECENT FINDINGS: The pathophysiology of intestinal stricture formation includes inflammation-dependent and inflammation-independent mechanisms. A better understanding of the mechanisms of intestinal fibrogenesis and the availability of compounds for other nonintestinal fib

BACKGROUND: Gastric duplication cysts are rare congenital alimentary tract anomalies and most cases are recognized during childhood. There were few reports about gastric duplication cysts in newborns and even fewer reports about laparoscopic resection of gastric duplication cysts in newborns.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a series of five newborns with gastric duplication cysts which were successfully resected by laparoscopy between January 2010 and April 2015. Case 1, a male newborn was admitted because of severe salivation, choking cough and dyspnea for 30 min after birth. Case 2, a male, wa

BACKGROUND: Traditionally, all patients with a malignant obstruction of the proximal colon (MOPC) are treated with emergency resection. However, recent data suggest that Self-expandable metallic stent (SEMS) placement could lower mortality and morbidity rates. This study therefore aimed to compare SEMS placement with emergency resection as treatment options for MOPC.
METHODS: All consecutive patients that underwent SEMS placement for MOPC in the period 2004-2015 at our institution were identified. SEMS placement was the standard of care for colonic obstructions at our institution in that peri
