Small bowel perforation caused by a fish bone in a patient with vascular Ehlers-Danlos syndrome: a case report.

Management of gastrointestinal perforation in patients with vascular Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (vEDS) is clinically challenging. A male in his 40s with vEDS presented with right lower abdominal pain. Computed tomography revealed a foreign body in the ileum with bowel perforation. A detailed inquiry revealed that he had consumed codfish six days prior. Based on these findings, he was diagnosed with a small bowel perforation caused by a fish bone. Emergency laparotomy was performed and intraoperative findings showed a fish bone in the ileum penetrating the mesentery. We resected ~5 cm of the small

Incidence and impact of peristomal candidiasis on outcomes after intestinal stoma closure: A prospective study.

An intestinal stoma is often created to protect a distal anastomosis. Factors affecting morbidity and mortality of stoma closure have been well studied; however, the role of fungal infection in peristomal skin has not. This prospective, observational study was conducted between August 2022 and July 2024 to determine the incidence of fungal infection in peristomal skin, in patients undergoing stoma closure, and its association with postoperative complications such as surgical site infection (SSI), anastomotic-leak, bowel obstruction/ileus and mortality. The incidence of paralytic ileus, bowel o

Colorectal cancer at the anastomotic site following childhood surgery for hirschsprung disease: a rare case report.

BACKGROUND: The present case of a colorectal adenocarcinoma at the anastomotic site of a colorectal anastomosis after childhood surgery for Hirschsprung disease is a rare report of such pathology. Possibly, the altered anatomy after Duhamel procedure may pose a risk for carcinogenesis in those patients. The previously surgically opened plane of the mesorectal fascia, which is usually dissected during total mesorectal excision in rectal cancer, and the impossibility to differentiate from colon or rectal cancer in this case influence oncologic treatment strategies. Furthermore, the case highligh

Incidence and Risk Factors of Postoperative Ileus in Oblique Lumbar Interbody Fusion Surgery: A Retrospective Study.

PURPOSE: Postoperative ileus (POI) typically occurs after abdominal surgery but can also affect patients undergoing spinal surgery via the lateral retroperitoneal approach, such as oblique lumbar interbody fusion (OLIF). Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the incidence and risk factors associated with POI in OLIF. METHODS: This retrospective study examined a cohort of 465 patients who underwent OLIF from 2015 to 2023. Patient demographics, comorbidities, pre- and postoperative laboratory test results, and perioperative status were assessed. General condition of patients was assessed u

Stapled vs. manually sutured bowel anastomosis in robot-assisted radical cystectomy: a single-center retrospective analysis.

BACKGROUND: Radical cystectomy is the primary treatment for muscle-invasive bladder cancer and certain cases of high-risk non-muscle-invasive disease. Robot-assisted cystectomy techniques (RARC) have emerged as a minimally invasive alternative to traditional open surgery, offering enhanced precision and potentially improved recovery. Bowel anastomosis remains a critical step in these procedures, with manually sutured anastomosis offering a cost-effective alternative to the standard stapled technique. However, concerns remain regarding its impact on surgical outcomes. METHODS: We conducted a r

Case Report: Successful treatment of severe Guillain-Barré syndrome with paralytic ileus as a presenting symptom by intensive immunotherapy.

Involvement of the intestinal autonomic nerves in Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) can lead to paralytic ileus, a condition commonly observed in severe cases during later stages of the disease. Cases with paralytic ileus as a presenting symptom are very rare. We report a case of a 35-year-old male patient who was admitted to the hospital with acute abdominal pain persisting for 12 hours. Abdominal CT suggested small bowel obstruction, for which routine conventional pharmacological treatment were ineffective. Subsequently, the patient presented with multiple sets of cranial nerve paralysis, bilate

Late-Onset Paralytic Ileus Following Cesarean Section: A Report of a Rare Case.

Paralytic ileus is a potential complication following cesarean section, though its delayed onset is uncommon and may present diagnostic challenges. We report a rare case of a 45-year-old woman who developed acute gastrointestinal paralysis 13 days after an uncomplicated elective cesarean section. The patient initially recovered well postoperatively, passing flatus within 24 hours and stool by the third day. However, nearly two weeks after discharge, she presented with abdominal distension, nausea, vomiting, fever, and an inability to pass flatus or stool. Laboratory tests revealed elevated inf

A Sting Beyond the Skin: Jellyfish Envenomation Presenting With Paralytic Ileus and Acute Urinary Retention.

Jellyfish envenomation typically causes localized pain and systemic reactions, but rare complications such as acute urinary retention and paralytic ileus can occur. We report a case of a 21-year-old fisherman from northern Sri Lanka who developed urinary retention and paralytic ileus following a jellyfish sting. He initially experienced severe pain and itching, followed by acute urinary retention, progressive abdominal distension, vomiting, and absent bowel opening. Imaging confirmed paralytic ileus without mechanical obstruction. The patient was managed conservatively with catheterization, bo

Histological insight into the fatal case of Guillain-Barre syndrome with atypical incidental presence of Marinesco bodies and corpora amylacea: an autopsy case report.

Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) is an inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy clinically characterized by ascending motor paralysis, autonomic dysfunction, and respiratory failure etc. Though generally associated with a good prognosis, a few cases may turn fatal. On autopsy, gross findings are nonspecific. Hence, autopsy diagnosis is based on clinical manifestations and histopathological examination. We report an autopsy case of GBS, which showed remarkable diagnostic features of unusual incidental neurodegenerative findings atypical for that age. A 43-year-old male presented with fever, respi

Autonomic Dysfunction in Miller Fisher Syndrome: Paralytic Ileus and Isolated Internal Ophthalmoplegia.

We describe a rare case of Miller Fisher syndrome (MFS) in a 37-year-old woman characterized by paralytic ileus and isolated internal ophthalmoplegia without any external ophthalmoplegia. The patient initially presented with severe abdominal pain and photophobia. A physical examination revealed mydriasis, impaired pupillary light reflexes, ataxia, and areflexia; however, her extraocular movements were preserved. The serum test results were positive for anti-GQ1b IgG antibodies. Treatment with intravenous immunoglobulin led to a near-complete resolution of the symptoms. This case demonstrates t

Paralytic ileus in 57 cows - symptoms, diagnosis and treatment.

BACKGROUND: Paralytic ileus (PI) also known as functional ileus or adynamic ileus occurs when intestinal motor activity is impaired. Cessation of ingesta passage leads to the accumulation of fluid and gas causing intestinal dilatation. With this type of ileus, intestinal transit is functionally impaired in the absence of a physical obstruction. The present retrospective study describes the diagnosis, treatment and outcome of 57 cows with PI. RESULTS: Colic occurred in 43.9% of the cows, and intestinal and rumen motility was reduced or absent in 92.9% (52/56) and 82.5% (47/57) of the cows, res
