Multiple small bowel cavernous hemangiomas complicated with intussusception presenting with intestinal obstruction: rare case report from Sudan and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Multiple cavernous hemangiomas (MCH) of the small intestine are a rare condition of the small bowel, with intussusception being an even rarer complication. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the first documented case of MCH from Sudan. An 11-year-old Sudanese woman with a long history of unexplained anemia presented with acute abdominal pain, vomiting, and absolute constipation, indicative of a mechanical bowel obstruction supported by X-ray findings of the abdomen. Failing conservative management, she underwent an emergent laparotomy. Intraoperatively, an ileoileal intussusception wi

Adult ileocolic intussusception due to a terminal ileal lipoma mimicking malignancy: a rare case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Adult ileocolic intussusception due to a terminal ileal lipoma is rare but clinically significant. The value of this case lies in how a typically benign and well-characterized condition presented with malignant-like clinical, radiologic, and inflammatory features, necessitating atypically extensive operative management and emphasizing diagnostic vigilance when assessing adult ileocolic intussusception. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 61-year-old male who presented with signs of subacute intestinal obstruction due to ileocolic intussusception secondary t

Severe Iron Deficiency Anemia in a Jehovah's Witness diagnosed with Peutz-Jeghers Syndrome.

A 29-year-old woman presented with abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and non-bloody diarrhea and was found to have profound microcytic iron deficiency anemia (hemoglobin 4.8 g/dL). Endoscopy and colonoscopy revealed numerous colonic, rectal, and gastric polyps. CT enterography showed multiple large jejunal polyps and a short-segment intussusception without obstruction. Histopathology confirmed hamartomatous polyps, and genetic testing identified a heterozygous pathogenic Serine/threonine kinase 11 (STK11/LKB1) variant, confirming Peutz-Jeghers syndrome. As a Jehovah's Witness, she declined all

Gender equity in pediatric surgical care in Central and South Asia: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: We assessed gender based access to pediatric surgical care in Central and South Asia (CSA) by reviewing published clinical studies. METHODS: A PRISMA-guided systematic review and meta-analysis of 99 pediatric surgical studies from CSA (2004-2023) included 10,508 children. Nineteen conditions grouped as acquired, congenital, or tumor related. After adjusting for minor sex based incidence differences using global and regional rates, we compared adjusted sex distributions with those in high-income countries. RESULTS: Boys were overrepresented in acquired conditions compared with high

Small-bowel intussusceptions in adults detected on CT: Determination of the clinical significance using CT findings, laboratory values, and clinical parameters.

PURPOSE: Evaluation of clinical findings, CT findings, or laboratory findings is helpful to differentiate between small bowel intussusceptions requiring surgery and those that are self-limiting. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective analysis of abdominal CT scans in adult patients using free text search with the terms "intussusception" and "invagination", followed by review of the image files to check for the presence of an intussusception. Evaluation of the resulting 112 adult patients (male/female, 81/31; mean age, 47±17 y) with a total of 145 small bowel intussusceptions noted on CT images.

Acral melanoma presenting with multiple intussusceptions: a case report and literature review.

Acral melanoma (AM) is a distinct subtype of melanoma unrelated to ultraviolet exposure, and its amelanotic variant presents considerable diagnostic challenges due to its occult clinical manifestations. Here, we report a rare case of amelanotic acral melanoma (AAM) with brain metastasis, initially presenting as multiple small intestinal intussusceptions. A 66-year-old male presented with abdominal pain and intestinal obstruction. Imaging revealed two sites of small bowel intussusception and space-occupying lesions in the brain. Emergency laparoscopic resection of three intestinal tumors was pe

First dynamic endoscopic diagnosis of blind ileal stump intussusception after Scopinaro biliopancreatic diversion.

BACKGROUND: Intussusception of the blind ileal stump is an extremely rare late complication of Scopinaro biliopancreatic diversion. Diagnosis is challenging because symptoms may be intermittent and radiological imaging frequently inconclusive. CASE PRESENTATION: A 58-year-old woman presented several years after undergoing Scopinaro biliopancreatic diversion with recurrent abdominal pain and vomiting. Repeated imaging showed no obstruction. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed intussusception of an elongated blind ileal stump prolapsing into the efferent limb. Surgical exploration confirme

Case Report: A rare cause of acute abdomen: retrograde efferent loop intussusception into the gastric remnant following Billroth II gastrectomy.

This paper reports a special case in which retrograde intussusception of the efferent loop through the gastrojejunostomy into the gastric remnant led to closed-loop intestinal obstruction and small bowel ischemia. The patient was a 69-year-old male with a history of subtotal gastrectomy, who was admitted for acute abdominal pain. Initial computed tomography (CT) findings were inconclusive, while contrast-enhanced CT suggested the possibility of intussusception. Emergency surgery confirmed the diagnosis, and the patient underwent gastrotomy with reduction, followed by partial small bowel resect

Appendiceal intussusception due to endometriosis: a case report.

The rate of implantation of endometrial tissue onto the appendix varies greatly within the literature with appendiceal intussusception being a rare clinical presentation in this small subset of patients. Here we discuss a case of appendiceal endometriosis with robotic partial cecectomy and appendectomy. This report describes our experience with appendiceal cecal intussusception. We report a case of appendiceal endometriosis causing intussusception. It is important to consider endometriosis as a cause of appendiceal intussusception in the differential diagnosis of females presenting with the co

Risk factors analysis for small bowel polyp recurrence in children with Peutz-Jeghers syndrome: A retrospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) is a genetic disorder characterized by gastrointestinal polyps, mucocutaneous pigmentation, and increased malignancy risk. In pediatric patients, recurrent complications such as intussusception often result in frequent surgeries. This study aimed to identify clinical risk factors for small bowel polyp recurrence in children with PJS. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 64 pediatric PJS patients who had at least two follow-up visits. Clinical data, including demographics, clinical features, and endoscopic findings, were collected. The primary outcome w

Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma with intussusception in adults: a case report and literature review.

Intussusception secondary to gastrointestinal diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is exceedingly rare in adults. We present a case of a 23-year-old male admitted with abdominal pain as the primary symptom. Computed tomography (CT) revealed an ileocolic intussusception involving the ascending and transverse colon, demonstrating a characteristic "target." Conservative treatment (including air enema) was ineffective, and the patient finally received surgical treatment. The resected lesion was pathologically confirmed as DLBCL. The patient received postoperative chemotherapy with the R-CHOP regi

Robotic-Assisted Resection of Transverse Colonic Leiomyosarcoma With Suspected Lymph Node Metastasis.

Colonic leiomyosarcoma is an exceptionally rare gastrointestinal mesenchymal tumor, often misclassified before the advent of immunohistochemical markers distinguishing it from gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST). We report the first case of robotic-assisted surgery for a transverse colonic leiomyosarcoma with suspected lymph node metastasis. A 73-year-old male presented with abdominal discomfort. Imaging revealed intussusception due to a 3-cm tumor in the transverse colon and an 8-mm enlarged lymph node. Biopsy showed spindle cell proliferation, immunohistochemically positive for α-SMA and

Neurofibromatosis type 1 with concomitant Peutz-Jeghers syndrome in a child: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) and Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) are distinct autosomal dominant disorders. Their concomitant occurrence is exceptionally rare. This report describes a unique pediatric case of this dual diagnosis. CASE PRESENTATION: An 8-year-old boy presented with paroxysmal abdominal pain accompanied by crying. He had multiple café-au-lait macules and a family history of NF1. He experienced recurrent intussusception resistant to non-invasive reduction. Exploratory laparotomy revealed jejunal intussusception caused by hamartomatous polyps, leading to resection and a

Pediatric Small Bowel Obstruction From a Migratory Trichobezoar.

Trichobezoars are rare intraluminal masses formed from ingested hair. They are most commonly located in the stomach. When trichobezoars extend from the stomach into the small intestine, it is referred to as "Rapunzel syndrome." One of the rarer complications of trichobezoars is small bowel obstruction due to distal migration. We present a case of a pediatric patient with a large gastrointestinal trichobezoar that migrated into the distal ileum, resulting in a small bowel obstruction. This case emphasizes the importance of radiographic imaging in the diagnosis of trichobezoars and their potenti

Targeting angiogenesis: Lessons from 25 years of normalizing tumor vasculature.

Tumors acquire blood vessels primarily via sprouting angiogenesis and co-option of pre-existing host vasculature, but also via intussusception, vasculogenesis from bone-marrow-derived progenitors, vascular mimicry, and endothelial transdifferentiation. The abnormal structure and function of these vessels, resulting from an imbalance between pro- and anti-angiogenic signaling as well as from the physical forces, impair the delivery and efficacy of therapeutics. We review the evolving narrative of targeting angiogenesis from starving tumors to vascular normalization as a therapeutic principle an
