Gallstone ileus is a rare but potentially serious complication of gallstone disease, which presents as a mechanical intestinal obstruction due to impaction and fistulization of a gallstone, most commonly in the small intestine. Since it usually occurs in elderly patients, the symptoms can be very diverse and with a late presentation. We present the case of a 90-year-old patient with intestinal obstruction and acute abdominal pain who experienced gallstone ileus and underwent surgery, and a few days after being discharged returned with a recurrence of the symptoms, was re-operated, and a second

A small bowel obstruction (SBO) involves partial or complete blockage of the small intestine. Complete high-grade or closed-loop obstructions constitute acute surgical emergencies necessitating urgent intervention to prevent severe complications. Several probable etiologies of SBO have been identified, including malignancy, stool impaction, and inflammatory bowel disease; however, post-surgical adhesion is the most prevalent cause in the developed world. A SBO can be diagnosed clinically after a physical examination, but imaging is needed for surgical assessment and management. Misdiagnosis an

BACKGROUND: Functional constipation is common in children and accurate diagnostic methods are essential for early diagnosis and effective management. The diagnostic accuracy of transabdominal ultrasound to diagnose functional constipation is unclear.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of transverse rectal diameter measurement via transabdominal ultrasound in diagnosing children with functional constipation and in identifying fecal impaction.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Electronic databases were searched from inception to March 2023. Original studies investigating the diagnostic accura

Foreign body ingestion of fishbones is a very common complaint where most foreign bodies travel safely through the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) without any serious complications. However, its clinical presentation is nonspecific, and its clinical severity can vary widely, thus requiring the use of conservative and or invasive treatment modalities. In this case report, we present a case of a 42-year-old female who reported eating fish two days prior to presenting with upper gastrointestinal tract (GIT) foreign body impaction in addition to a lower GIT micro-perforation secondary to fishbone ing

Small-bowel diverticulosis is relatively common, but there is no set treatment strategy for duodenal diverticulitis with stone impaction. A woman aged in her 70s presented with a chief complaint of abdominal pain, and she had been reconstructed by the Roux-en-Y method after total gastrectomy. We performed an enhanced computed tomography which revealed edematous wall thickening of the duodenum. We diagnosed her with duodenal diverticulitis and treated them with antibiotics but her disease was not cured, we therefore attempted endoscopic stone removal as a nonoperative treatment. After stone rem

A "barium chemobezoar" or "barolith" is a rare but serious cause of intestinal obstruction. We present two cases, a 70-year-old female patient and a 61-year-old male patient, both requiring urgent surgery for barolith-induced bowel obstruction. Diagnostic challenges were encountered in both cases, with imaging raising suspicion for barolith formation after prior barium use. Surgical intervention, including colotomy and enterotomy, was necessary due to the risk of perforation and ischemia. These cases highlight the variability in presentation and the lack of standardized guidelines for diagnosi

Stercoral colitis is a rare entity of inflammatory colitis with high morbidity and mortality attributable to colonic fecaloma impaction, often a result of chronic constipation. Despite demographic imbalance favoring elders, children hold comparative risk factors for chronic constipation. Suspicion for stercoral colitis is warranted in nearly every stage of life. Computerized tomography (CT) is diagnostic for stercoral colitis, where radiological findings correlate to high sensitivity and specificity. Difficulty exists discerning from other acute and chronic intestinal etiologies with overlappi

BACKGROUND: Gastric impactions (GI) have been identified as primary lesions (lone GI; LGI) or associated with other intestinal lesions (concurrent GI; CGI). Anecdotally, CGI resolve more rapidly with a better prognosis than LGI.
OBJECTIVES: To determine clinical, laboratory, and ultrasonographic findings, and short- and long-term survival in horses with GI. We hypothesized that LGI carries a worse prognosis than CGI.
ANIMALS: Seventy-one horses from 2 referral hospitals (2007-2022).
METHODS: Retrospective cohort study. Gastric impactions were defined as feed extending to the margo plicatus

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Colic is among the common health issues in equine health management. Gastrointestinal (GI) disorders are the most frequent causes of colic, but dysfunction of other organs and systems inside the abdominal cavity may also contribute. Therefore, it is crucial to identify risk factors for colic of specific etiologies. This study aimed to examine the incidence, risk factors, and best therapeutic management practices for horses with colic.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cohort of 256 horses living in Lamongan, East Java, Indonesia, was randomly recruited based on reports of colic sym

Introduction Constipation is a common condition in children, affecting almost one-third of the population at some point in childhood across the world. Functional constipation is the most common cause, with no clear etiology. From April 25, 2014, through October 16, 2015, the water source for the city of Flint residents was untreated Flint River water, which resulted in lead-contaminated drinking water. Lead poisoning has been associated with constipation and has multisystem sequelae, including neurological, muscular, and hematological impacts. Children may be especially vulnerable to this wit

The presence of foreign objects in the digestive system can lead to various complications within the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. In certain cases, ingesting foreign objects can pose a significant dilemma for surgical teams, primarily because they can lead to blockages or punctures in the upper or lower sections of the GI tract. On occasion, foreign objects located in the lower regions of the digestive tract, such as the colon and rectum, might have entered via the anal pathway, thereby carrying the potential risk of causing perforations in the rectum or sigmoid colon. The other complications

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the viability and safety of a novel defecator in managing rectal fecal impaction. Methods: In a descriptive case series, this new defecator was administered to constipated individuals among the ages of 18 and 80 years who met the diagnostic criteria for rectal fecal impaction and were identified with acute rectal fecal impaction through CT scans. The contraindications for this defecator included: (1) Anal stenosis, acute intestinal obstruction, and intestinal perforation; (2) Concomitant rectal malignant tumors; (3) Coagulation dysfunction, low platel

BACKGROUND: Few studies have evaluated the efficacy of ultrasonography (US) and abdominal radiography in assessing bladder and bowel dysfunction in children aged <24 months. We aimed to investigate the association between the risk of urinary tract infection (UTI) recurrence and fecal impaction using imaging findings.
METHODS: The medical records of 121 children (aged <24 months) with initial febrile UTI (fUTI) who were admitted to the authors' institution from January 2004 to September 2019 were reviewed retrospectively. We evaluated the rectal diameters of children with suspected fecal impac

Enterolithiasis is a well-documented cause of colic in horses, especially in some geographic areas such as California and Florida. This retrospective case-control study aims at comparing the prevalence of gastric ulcers in horses affected by enterolithiasis to that in horses affected by other types of large intestinal obstruction. Two hundred and ninety-six horses were included in the study sample. Horses that had surgery for the removal of one or more enteroliths were included in the study as cases. Patients that had surgery for large intestinal simple obstructions other than enterolithiasis

BACKGROUND: Intestinal obstruction is a common presentation in pediatric surgical emergencies and presents with different etiologies depending on country or region. Its morbidity and mortality are high in low-income and middle-income countries, with variable influencing factors. The aims of this study were to determine the etiologies, morbidity and mortality of pediatric intestinal obstruction and to assess the factors associated with the outcomes of these conditions in Rwanda.
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study conducted on pediatric patients with intestinal obstruction in two Rwandan

More than half of pregnant women are usually affected by odontogenic pain affects. Pain often accompanies periapical or pulp infections and increases the risks to pregnant patients and their fetuses. The American Dental Association, in partnership with the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, has offered a strong declaration reaffirming the significance of suitable and timely oral health care as an indispensable constituent of a healthy pregnancy. However, there is lack of knowledge about the use of antibiotics in endodontic treatment. Therefore, the present study would review

Gallstone ileus is a rare complication of cholelithiasis, representing 1% of bowel obstructions. The usual site of obstruction is the ileocecal valve, though other sites have been reported. Here, we present two cases of gallstone ileus within the distal colon requiring surgical intervention. Two elderly females presented with vague abdominal symptoms secondary to large bowel obstruction from gallstone impaction. Both underwent attempted endoscopic retrieval without success. Patient 1 required laparoscopy converted to exploratory laparotomy with colotomy and removal of the stone. Patient 2 requ

BACKGROUND: Placement of a self-expanding metal stent (SEMS) in patients presenting with an acute colorectal obstruction (ACO) may obviate emergency surgery (ES), potentially effectively palliating incurable tumors, acting as a bridge to surgery (BTS) in patients with operable or potentially operable tumors and achieving effective decompression of other ACO. We present our experience with SEMS insertion by colorectal surgeons without fluoroscopic monitoring for ACO especially for acute malignant colorectal obstruction (AMCO) for nearly a 14-year period (2007-2020).
AIM: To explore the safety

BACKGROUND: Cytomegalovirus (CMV) colitis is usually seen in immunocompromised patients with risk factors such as human immunodeficiency virus infection, solid organ transplant, inflammatory bowel disease, or malignancy. Therefore, many clinicians usually do not consider the possibility of CMV colitis in immunocompetent patients. We reported a rare case of segmental colonic hypoganglionosis associated with CMV colitis in an immunocompetent patient.
CASE SUMMARY: A 48-year-old woman with no underlying disease was admitted to our hospital for severe abdominal pain and constipation. Computed tom

BACKGROUND: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is the most common, life-limiting, genetically inherited disease. It affects multiple organs, particularly the respiratory system. However, gastrointestinal problems such as constipation and distal intestinal obstruction syndrome (DIOS) are also important and well-recognised complications in CF. They share similar symptoms e.g. bloating, abdominal pain, but are distinct conditions. Constipation occurs when there is gradual faecal impaction of the colon, but DIOS occurs when there is an accumulation of faeces and sticky mucus, forming a mass in the distal part o
