BACKGROUND: Adhesive intestinal obstruction (AIO) is a common and critical complication of intra-abdominal surgery, often requiring preventative measures such as using anti-adhesion agents (AAA). However, despite their prevalence and significance, a notable lack of long-term and large-scale clinical evidence exists supporting the effectiveness and cost-utility of these agents. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and cost-utility of applying AAA in patients undergoing intra-abdominal surgery.
METHODS: This is a retrospective observational study utilizing the Korean National Health I

While postoperative adhesions, hernias, and tumors are common causes of small bowel obstruction (SBO), food-induced obstruction is rare. Konjac (Amorphophallus konjac)-related SBO is exceptionally uncommon, with only a few cases documented in the English literature. We present the case of a man in his 50s who developed abdominal pain during breakfast. After conservative management at a local clinic failed, he was referred to our hospital. Abdominal computed tomography indicated SBO of unknown etiology. Emergency laparotomy revealed four connected pieces of konjac obstructing the small intestin

BACKGROUND: Small bowel obstruction (SBO) is a common long-term complication following abdominal surgery and a frequent cause of inpatient admissions. The most common cause of SBO is adhesions, followed by hernias and malignancy. Non-operative management strategies include bowel rest, nasogastric decompression, and Gastrografin administration, each with their own advantages and risks. Intravenous (IV) corticosteroids (Dexamethasone) have demonstrated benefit in malignant SBO but remain unexamined in adhesive SBO. The aim of this study is to evaluate the role of Dexamethasone in adhesive SBO.

Simultaneous pancreas-kidney (SPK) transplantation is a surgical treatment for patients with long-standing type 1 diabetes mellitus who consequently develop diabetic nephropathy and end-stage renal disease. Well-documented complications of pancreas transplant surgery include acute rejection, chronic rejection, pancreatitis, graft thrombosis, hemorrhage, anastomotic leakage, and intra-abdominal infection. However, small bowel obstruction (SBO), either through internal hernias or adhesive bands, can also occur. Our report details the case of a patient with a history of SPK transplantation 1.5 ye

INTRODUCTION: Small bowel obstruction (SBO) is a frequent cause of surgical emergency, most commonly due to adhesions, hernias, or tumors. Mesh-related SBO following laparoscopic sacropexy is an exceptionally rare complication, often presenting years after the initial procedure and difficult to diagnose preoperatively.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 69-year-old Caucasian woman with a history of laparoscopic sacropexy for cystocele repair using mesh eight years prior, presenting with abdominal pain, bilious vomiting, and distension. Laboratory tests revealed leukocytosis and elevated inflammat

Adhesive small bowel obstruction (ASBO) is commonly managed conservatively, with adjuncts such as CT scan with per-oral water-soluble contrast, which are diagnostic and in some cases therapeutic. However, these may not be consistently available in low-resource settings. Hypertonic solutions have been shown to influence intestinal oedema and function, but the role of intravenous hypertonic dextrose is unclear. We describe an observational experience of adjunctive 25% dextrose (40 mL daily for 3 days) in selected patients with ASBO managed non-operatively at a tertiary centre in central India.

Adhesive small bowel obstruction (aSBO) remains one of the most common causes of surgical admission and morbidity. With advancements in imaging and the advent of water-soluble contrast, management has become increasingly non-operative. Although this is successful in a majority of patients, patients who fail this trial without operation may face worse outcomes. Delays to surgical intervention are associated with increased rates of bowel ischemia, resection, infectious complications, and mortality. Optimal management therefore depends on early risk stratification, disciplined non-operative trial

Small bowel obstruction (SBO) is a surgical emergency commonly caused by adhesions from prior abdominal surgeries or hernias. In contrast, SBO caused by omental bands with no history of trauma or abdominal surgeries is rare, and only a few cases have been reported. We present a case of a previously healthy 44-year-old male who presented with sudden, severe generalized colicky abdominal pain after eating, associated with nausea, vomiting, and abdominal tenderness, without distension. Initial lab results and X-ray findings were unremarkable. Intravenous contrast computed tomography (CT) scan rev

BACKGROUND: Intra-peritoneal adhesive disease (IPAD) can lead to debilitating symptoms including bowel obstruction, chronic abdominopelvic pain, and infertility. Standard tools to evaluate patient experiences for this disease process have not been described. This scoping review aims to (1) identify existing Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) related to IPAD and (2) evaluate the utility and quality of available IPAD-related PROMs, measured by predefined adhesive disease domains.
METHODS: Systematic searches were completed in PubMed using terms specific to IPAD-related symptoms and Quali

Mucinous cancers are characterized by tumor gland cells secreting copious amounts of mucus that forms gel-like structures. Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP), a rare yet prototypical mucinous malignancy, exemplifies this pathology. Biologically inert mucus coats tumor cells, promoting colonization, immune evasion, and chemoresistance. Pathological mucus accumulation leads to intra-abdominal hypertension, refractory abdominal pain, abdominal adhesions, and intestinal obstruction because of the lack of rapid, efficient, and safe clinical strategies for mucin clearance. Current management relies on ext

Postoperative intraabdominal adhesions remain one of the most common and clinically significant complications following abdominal and pelvic surgery. Adhesions contribute to adhesive small bowel obstruction (aSBO), chronic abdominal pain, infertility, and increased healthcare costs. Despite decades of research, the clinical value and routine adoption of anti-adhesion barriers remain subject to debate. This review critically examines the role of anti-adhesion barriers in preventing aSBO, focusing on their mechanisms, efficacy, limitations, and emerging developments. Multiple barriers consistent

Background and Objectives: Small bowel obstruction (SBO) is a common surgical emergency, accounting for 15-20% of acute general surgical admissions. Despite the Bologna Guideline's introduction to the surgical community almost a decade ago, adherence to it remains variable. The therapeutic role of contrast media and the optimal timing of its administration remain a matter of debate. This study aimed to compare SBO resolution rates according to the timing of water-soluble contrast media (WSCM) administration. Materials and Methods: A prospective, randomised pilot trial was conducted at two regi

Hartmann's procedure is often performed in emergency settings for complicated diverticulitis, obstructive colorectal cancer, or colonic perforations when primary anastomosis is not feasible. Hartmann Reversal (HR) is technically demanding, primarily due to dense intra-abdominal adhesions, and is traditionally performed in open or laparoscopic surgery. However, laparoscopic reversal is associated with high conversion rates, often due to difficulties in adhesiolysis. Robotic surgery, offering enhanced visualization and instrument dexterity, has been proposed as a promising alternative. This retr

Urethral reconstruction often fails due to the foreign body reaction (FBR) triggered by the graft, leading to chronic inflammation, fibrosis, and lumen obstruction. To address this challenge, we developed an innovative strategy: a 3D-printed polylactic acid (PLA) scaffold was pre-implanted subcutaneously for 14 days to recruit host-derived fibroblasts, monocytes, and adipose-derived stem cells. These cells secreted a biomimetic extracellular matrix (ECM) rich in collagen, elastin, and glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), resulting in a proteoglycan (PG)-enriched, bioactive tissue-engineered urethral gra
