Association between air pollution and paediatric intestinal intussusception in Seoul, Korea: a time-series regression approach.

OBJECTIVES: The impact of air pollution on gastrointestinal diseases remains unclear. This study examines the association between air pollutants and paediatric intussusception incidence. METHODS: Using data from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service (HIRA), we analysed daily intussusception cases in Seoul (2009-2019). Air pollutants, including particulate matter (PM10), ozone (O3), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon monoxide (CO), and sulphur dioxide (SO2), were assessed alongside temperature. A generalized linear model with a negative binomial link function evaluated the relationshi

A Case of Congenital Peritoneal Encapsulation Complicated with Left Paraduodenal Hernia Presenting as Recurrent Small Bowel Obstruction.

INTRODUCTION: Congenital peritoneal encapsulation (CPE) is a rare anomaly in which the small intestine is enclosed in a thin peritoneal sac. Although mostly asymptomatic, CPE can cause severe intestinal obstruction due to strangulation and torsion. CASE PRESENTATION: A 16-year-old male patient had been experiencing recurrent intestinal obstruction of unknown cause since the age of 13. He was admitted with persistent abdominal pain as his chief complaint, and emergency laparoscopic surgery was performed due to a suspected strangulating intestinal obstruction. The findings included an abnormal

Waugh's Syndrome in Adulthood: A Case Report of a Rare Combination of Intestinal Malrotation and Ileocolic Intussusception.

Intestinal malrotation is an uncommon congenital anomaly resulting from abnormal rotation and fixation of the midgut during embryologic development. Although typically diagnosed during infancy, presentation in adulthood is rare and frequently associated with nonspecific symptoms. Adult intussusception is also an unusual condition and is commonly related to an underlying pathological lead point. The coexistence of intestinal malrotation and intussusception, known as Waugh's syndrome, is exceptionally rare in adults. We report the case of a 76-year-old male presenting with intermittent abdominal

A Rare Twist: Case Study on Gastrohepatic Volvulus.

A gastric volvulus occurs when the stomach rotates around itself, creating a closed-loop obstruction. This can result in a life-threatening condition in which supporting vasculature can be obstructed and lead to ischemia, necrosis, and perforation. A gastrohepatic volvulus is an exceedingly rare type of gastric volvulus in which the stomach rotates in relation to the liver, specifically around the gastrohepatic ligament. We present a case of a 39-year-old female with a history of congenital malrotation and developmental delay who presented to the emergency room for nausea and emesis. Physical

A Giant Enteric Duplication Cyst Presenting as Mechanical Intestinal Obstruction in a Four-Year-Old Child: A Case Report.

Enteric duplication cysts are rare congenital malformations of the gastrointestinal tract that may present with a broad spectrum of clinical manifestations, ranging from incidental findings to life-threatening complications such as intestinal obstruction, volvulus, perforation, and gastrointestinal bleeding. Due to their nonspecific clinical presentation, preoperative diagnosis remains challenging. We report the case of a four-year-old boy who presented with a three-day history of fever, diarrhea, progressive lethargy, and colicky abdominal pain. Initial clinical assessment suggested acute inf

Effectiveness of ultrasound-guided hydrostatic versus fluoroscopy-guided air reduction for pediatric intussusception: a severity-adjusted cohort analysis.

BACKGROUND: The comparative effectiveness of fluoroscopy-guided air reduction (FGAR) versus ultrasound-guided hydrostatic reduction (UGHR) for pediatric intussusception remains uncertain, especially when clinical and sonographic severity are considered. OBJECTIVE: To compare the effectiveness and safety of FGAR and UGHR after adjusting for disease severity and to identify independent predictors of non-operative reduction failure. METHODS: A retrospective cohort of 192 children (0-24 months) with ileocolic intussusception treated between 2018 and 2024 was analyzed. Baseline clinical variables

Meckel's Diverticulum Causing Small Bowel Obstruction in Male Patients: A Case Series.

Meckel's diverticulum is a congenital abnormality of the gastrointestinal tract, resulting from an incomplete obliteration of the vitello-intestinal duct. Generally, Meckel's diverticulum is asymptomatic, but it can present as intestinal perforation, obstruction, hemorrhage, and diverticulitis. These complications can develop through various mechanisms such as volvulus, adhesions, intussusception, and internal hernia. Small bowel obstruction due to a meso-diverticular band of Meckel's diverticulum is a rare complication. Herein, we present a case series of three male patients presenting with i

Decoding Non-Traumatic Acute Abdomen in Children: Insights from the Emergency Department of a Tertiary Hospital in Mogadishu, Somalia.

INTRODUCTION: Acute abdomen is characterized by acute and severe abdominal pain caused by intra-abdominal disease and often requires surgical intervention. Accurate diagnosis is difficult because of symptom similarity and diverse causes, such as appendicitis, intussusception, and mesenteric adenitis, which can present with overlapping symptoms in pediatric patients. The aim of this study is to analyze the causes, diagnosis, and outcome of non-traumatic acute abdomen in pediatric patients at a tertiary hospital in Mogadishu. METHODOLOGY: A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted from

The Efficacy of Lacosamide in the Treatment of Delirium Complicated With Ileus: Four Cases.

Delirium is a common disease in elderly patients and requires medications, although nondrug interventions are recommended. When delirious patients are complicated with ileus, the selection of drugs would be difficult. In this paper, three cases of antipsychotic-induced paralytic ileus successfully managed with lacosamide are presented without any severe adverse effects, including psychiatric symptoms. Lacosamide is a newer antiepileptic drug that acts on the sodium channels. Drug-induced eruptions are rare compared to other antiepileptics, such as carbamazepine and lamotrigine. Lacosamide can

SPARC induction and correlation with inflammation and fibrosis in a mouse model of alkali-induced abdominal adhesions.

Postoperative abdominal adhesions can cause several complications, such as intestinal obstruction, female infertility, and chronic pelvic pain. By alkaline cauterization of the cecum, we established a mouse abdominal adhesion model to investigate the roles of secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine (SPARC) in adhesion formation. Alkaline cauterization led to elevation of adhesion scores and mRNA levels of SPARC, monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and collagen I on Days 3, 7, and 14, with a positive correlation between SPARC levels and MCP-1, TNF-α

Acute ileo-ileal intussusception following a Swenson procedure in a resource-limited setting: a case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Unexpected postoperative complications associated with the Swenson procedure for the surgical management of Hirschsprung's disease are rarely documented, and postoperative intussusception following this technique is seldom reported. We present a case of acute ileo-ileal intussusception occurring after the Swenson procedure. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient was a 12-month-old infant who, 16 days after undergoing a Swenson resection, presented with rectal bleeding and abdominal distension. A plain abdominal X-ray demonstrated features of intestinal obstruction, while

When It Is Not NEC: Recognizing Mimics of Necrotizing Enterocolitis in Preterm Infants.

Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in preterm infants, yet it remains one of the most challenging neonatal diagnoses to establish with certainty. No single clinical, laboratory, or radiographic finding is pathognomonic, and the modified Bell's staging system is limited because features such as abdominal distension, bloody stools, pneumatosis intestinalis, and portal venous gas are common in preterm infants or are mimicked by other conditions. A wide range of disorders in preterm and term neonates can therefore resemble NEC, including spontaneous intesti

Genetic evidence for a causal protective effect of GLP-1 receptor agonists on paralytic ileus but not on other gastrointestinal events.

The association between glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) and gastrointestinal events remains controversial in observational studies. To address this, our study employed drug-target Mendelian randomization (MR) to investigate the causal relationship between GLP-1RAs and 24 gastrointestinal disorders, supplemented by sensitivity analyses, Cox proportional hazards regression analysis and mediation testing. Using single-nucleotide polymorphisms significantly associated with GLP1R gene expression as instrumental variables, we mimicked the lifelong pharmacological effects of GLP-

Laparoscopic versus open emergency colonic resection for obstruction: a multicentre retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Despite its established benefits in elective colorectal surgery, the adoption of laparoscopy in the emergency setting remains limited. This retrospective international multicentre study assesses laparoscopic and open colonic resection in patients with acute benign or malignant colonic obstruction. METHODS: Patients were included between 2022 and 2023. Intraperitoneal free air on imaging was an exclusion criterion. Primary outcomes were the Comprehensive Complication Index (CCI) and length of stay (LOS). Secondary outcomes included postoperative pain management, re-operation, 30- a

Incidental Finding of Adult Intussusception Following Screening Colonoscopy: A Case Report.

Intussusception is a condition in which a portion of the bowel telescopes into an adjacent portion of the bowel. The present case describes adult intussusception following a routine screening colonoscopy. The patient had experienced episodic right lower quadrant pain but never sought medical care. He was ultimately found to have a small bowel mass that served as the lead point of the intussusception. This case underscores the importance of identifying the source of abdominal pain before performing a screening colonoscopy, regardless of how benign the abdominal pain may appear clinically.

Intestinal Malrotation in Adults: A Retrospective Cross-Sectional Study Based on Computed Tomography Findings.

Purpose Intestinal malrotation is an uncommon congenital anomaly that may remain clinically silent until adulthood and is increasingly detected incidentally on computed tomography (CT). Classical radiologic markers have limited diagnostic sensitivity in adults. This study evaluated the prevalence and CT characteristics of intestinal malrotation in a large adult cohort using strict CT-based diagnostic criteria. Methods A retrospective cross-sectional review of 3,478 abdominal CT scans performed between June 2023 and April 2025 was conducted. All examinations were screened for features suggestiv

Twist in the cecum: A case series of mobile cecum, cecal volvulus and cecal bascule.

The case series involves 4 patients aged 60-71 years with unusual cecal pathology: mobile cecum, cecal volvulus, and cecal bascule. The clinical manifestations were diverse, showing chronic and intermittent abdominal pain on 1 side, and acute intestinal obstruction on the other, indicating the diagnosis challenge of the conditions. The diagnosis in all cases relied on computed tomography, but there was 1 presentation that was first thought to be gastric distention, underlining the importance of meticulous radiologic evaluation. One patient experienced postoperative volvulus, and another incide

Mechanical Small Bowel Obstruction Secondary to Low-Grade Appendiceal Mucinous Neoplasm: A Case Report.

Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN) is an uncommon epithelial tumor that is frequently diagnosed incidentally and only rarely produces mechanical small bowel obstruction, with previous reports limited to isolated cases. We describe a 53-year-old man with a four-day history of periumbilical pain, obstipation, nausea, and bilious vomiting. Examination showed abdominal distension, decreased bowel sounds, and rebound tenderness. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) demonstrated a 7 cm heterogeneous right hemiabdominal mass with pericecal fat stranding that favored, but did not def
