Lyell´s syndrome associated with the use of topical agents: case report.

UNLABELLED: Pseudomonas aeruginosa AG1 (PaeAG1) is a Costa Rican strain that was isolated in 2010 in a major Hospital. This strain has resistance to multiple antibiotics such as β-lactams (including carbapenems), aminoglycosides, and fluoroquinolones. PaeAG1 is considered critical (Priority 1) due to its resistance to carbapenems, and it was the first report of a P. aeruginosa isolate carrying both VIM-2 and IMP-18 genes encoding for metallo-β-lactamases (MBL) enzymes (both with carbapenemase activity). Owing to these traits, we have studied this model for 10 years using diverse approaches inc

Tummy pain is not often what we think - Imaging findings in uncommon causes of abdominal pain in children and adolescents - A case series.

Acute abdominal pain is a common complaint in children. We came across several unusual causes of acute abdomen including jejunal haematoma, perforation and abdominal abscess following hydrostatic intussusception reduction, twisting of mesenteric cyst, perforation of sigmoid colon and Meckel's diverticulum presenting with intussusception. In this article, we aim to present imaging features of these entities so that paediatric surgeons, radiologists and other health-care providers are aware of these unusual manifestations of acute abdomen.

Indications for Operative Management of Complicated Duodenal Diverticula: A Review.

The duodenum is the second most common location for a diverticulum to form after the colon. These duodenal diverticula (DD) are often found incidentally and rarely require intervention. In recent years, surgical management has been restricted to patients with significant complicated sequelae, such as perforation, abscess, or fistula formation. We present the rare case of a perforated broad-based diverticulum in the third portion of the duodenum necessitating surgical correction. The patient presented with persistent symptoms following failure of conservative management and underwent surgical r

Small bowel diverticulitis - Spectrum of CT findings and review of the literature.

PURPOSE: To review the CT findings and complications of small bowel diverticulitis (SBD) and discuss clinical presentations and outcomes. METHODS: A text search of radiology reports within our health system for cases of small bowel diverticulitis yielded 95 cases. All cases were reviewed by an abdominal radiologist with equivocal cases reviewed by a second abdominal radiologist for consensus. Retrospective analysis of CT imaging findings was performed on 67 convincing cases of SBD. RESULTS: Small bowel diverticulitis most often affected the jejunum (58%) and the duodenum (26%). The most comm

Liver abscess caused by fish bone perforation of Meckel's diverticulum: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Liver abscess due to gastrointestinal perforation by foreign bodies is rare. Furthermore, there are few case reports of liver abscess via the portal vein caused by perforation of the lower gastrointestinal tract by a foreign body. CASE PRESENTATION: A 54-year-old man visited our hospital because of a fever that had lasted for 1 month. There were no physical findings except for the fever. Laboratory tests showed only elevated inflammatory markers. Abdominal contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed an abscess in the right lobe of the liver and a high-density object in the smal

Rare aetiology of abdominal pain: contained abscess secondary to perforated jejunal diverticulitis.

A patient with a history of multiple jejunal diverticulosis (JD) presented with a non-peritonitic abdominal pain and leucocytosis. CT scan showed a thick-walled interloop collection within the left mid-abdomen with dilated bowels and mild diffuse air-fluid levels. Exploratory laparotomy revealed multiple diverticular outpouchings in the mid-jejunum, one of which was perforated, contained within the mesentery. Resection of the contained abscess and primary anastomosis were performed subsequently.

Small intestinal diverticula.

The prevalence of small intestinal diverticula (SID) in the population is 0.5-2.3%, and in most cases they are asymptomatic. In the presence of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth this results in chronic diarrhea and malabsorption. When it is complicated by diverticulitis it causes pain and other symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease. Inflammatory process progression may be accompanied by bleeding, invagination, intestinal obstruction, diverticulum abscess and perforation with peritonitis development. SID include separate nosological forms such as paraphateral diverticulum and Meckel's dive

Pseudodiverticula of the Small Intestine Associated With Idiopathic Smooth Muscle Hypertrophy in Domestic Rabbits ( Oryctolagus cuniculus).

Acquired outpouches of the intestinal tract are referred to as pseudodiverticula or false pulsion diverticula. In contrast to true diverticula, in which the wall contains all layers of the intestinal tract, the wall of pseudodiverticula lacks the tunica muscularis. Smooth muscle hypertrophy of the small intestine is commonly considered a cause of pseudodiverticulosis in animals due to increased intraluminal pressure. This study reports pseudodiverticula associated with idiopathic smooth muscle hypertrophy of the small intestine in lagomorphs. Four domestic rabbits had single or multiple (up to

Concurrent perforated Meckel's diverticulum and intestinal malrotation in an 8-year-old boy.

An 8-year-old boy with a history of recurrent abdominal pain presented with a 12 h history of severe periumbilical pain, nausea and vomiting. On examination, he was found to have a tender, erythematous, paraumbilical mass. At operative exploration, an abscess cavity was identified and followed to reveal a gangrenous Meckel's diverticulum, perforated at its tip to create the abscess. Around this Meckel's diverticulum, the small bowel had torted to produce a significant small bowel volvulus on a shortened mesentery. The caecum and ascending colon were found to be in the left upper quadrant and a

[A Case of Penetrating Diverticulum of the Small Intestine that Occurred during Chemotherapy for Esophageal Cancer].

An 80-year-old man was seen by his family doctor with chief complaints of fatigue and loss of appetite. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy showed a type 2 tumor of the lower thoracic esophagus, and the patient was referred to our hospital. Squamous cell carcinoma was diagnosed on biopsy, and computed tomography (CT) showed multiple pulmonary metastases. The patient was diagnosed with Stage Ⅳ thoracic esophageal carcinoma, and was started on combined chemotherapy with 5-FU plus CDDP. Seven days after the start of chemotherapy, the patient developed mild intermittent pain. By day 18, the blood tes

[Retrospective analysis of ultrasound imaging characteristics of 58 patients with Meckel's diverticulum disease].

To evaluate the ultrasound imaging characteristics and diagnostic criteria for acute abdominal Meckel's di- verticulum disease (MD), we retrospectively analyzed the ultrasonic characteristics, clinical data of 58 cases of pathologically proved MD from January 2009 to May 2012. We found that among all the 58 patients, 21 patients were diagnosed with the preoperative clinical diagnosis of MD. Fourteen cases of MD inflammation with acute appendicitis were evaluated by pathological examinations after the surgery. We also found 4 cases of MD with perforation, 15 cases of MD with intussusceptions, 1

Appendicitis and diverticulitis of the colon: misleading forms.

Appendicitis and diverticulitis of the colon are the two main causes of febrile acute abdomen in adults. Diagnosis from imaging (ultrasound and CT) is usually easy. However, an imaging procedure which is not suitable for the clinical situation and an examination performed with the wrong protocol are sources of error and must be avoided. Anatomical variants, inflammatory cancers, complicated forms (perforation, secondary occlusion of the small intestine, peripheral abscesses, fistulae, pylephlebitis, liver abscesses) and associated signs related to a peritoneal inflammatory reaction (reflex ile

Surgical management of complicated small bowel diverticular disease. About 4 clinical reports.

Diverticula of the small intestine are relatively rare. A retrospective analysis of 4 cases of the practice of Department of General and Hepatopancreatic surgery, University Hospital "Alexandrovska"--Sofia was performed. Two patients are with Meckel diverticulum--the first one with diverticulitis, and the second with perforation and formed abscess cavity. The third case presents a patient with an intestinal loop with diverticula accreted in hernial sack and forth one is with diverticular perforation of the small intestine. All of them underwent surgery. This is accomplished with a literature r

Perforated Meckel's diverticulitis on the mesenteric side: MDCT findings.

Meckel's diverticulum (MD) is the most common congenital anomaly of the gastro-intestinal tract (approximately 2% of population), and arises from improper closure and absorption of the omphalomesenteric duct. Very few cases of Meckel's diverticulitis on the mesenteric side have been reported in the surgical literature, and no reported cases have been documented on preoperative imaging. We report a 65-year-old woman presenting symptoms and signs of acute abdomen with an initial suspicion of acute appendicitis. MDCT imaging revealed a mesenteric abscess in the right lower quadrant at the level o

Sigmoido-gluteal fistula--a rare complication in clinically asymptomatic chronic diverticulitis.

Chronic colonic diverticulitis may be associated with typical complications such as local abscesses, stenosis, bleeding, intraperitoneal bowel perforations or fistulas to other organs. Most commonly, fistulas exist between the colon and the bladder; nevertheless, they may also extend to the small intestine, other areas of the colon, ureter, uterus, salpinx, vagina, abdominal wall, portal- and mesenterial venous system, pleura, urachus, biliary system and the hip. We report on a patient with chronic colonic diverticulitis having an unusual sigmoido-gluteal fistula along the sacrum, the piriform
