Clinicopathological findings of melioidosis in captive red-legged pademelons (Thylogale stigmatica) in northern Queensland, Australia.

BACKGROUND: Melioidosis, caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei, is an important disease that is endemic in areas of northern Australia and can cause a wide range of clinical signs in people and animals. There is limited published data on the disease in marsupials. CASE REPORT: Two captive red-legged pademelons (Thylogale stigmatica) with collective signs of lethargy, dysphagia and bloody oral discharge were submitted for necropsy and showed variations in pathology findings ranging from multifocal abscessation in various tissues to evidence of fulminant septicaemia. In both cases Burkholderia ps

A rare case of Streptobacillus moniliformis epidural abscess requiring neurosurgical decompression.

BACKGROUND: Streptobacillus moniliformis is the primary causative agent of rat bite fever, an infectious disease transmitted through contact with rats through bites, scratches, or exposure to excrement. Before this report, only two instances of spinal epidural abscess (SEA) due to S. moniliformis infection have been documented. We present the case of a 76-year-old male who developed a cervical SEA secondary to S. moniliformis infection, requiring neurosurgical decompression of the spinal cord. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 76-year-old male presented to the emergency department with bilateral shoulder a

Abscesses due to Melioidosis: A case-based review.

Melioidosis is caused by percutaneous inoculation or inhalation of Burkholderia pseudomallei, predominantly among individuals with risk factors (diabetes mellitus, immunosuppression, etc.) from endemic areas of South Asia, Southeast Asia and Northern Australia. While some patients present acutely with sepsis and multi-organ failure, others present with a subacute to chronic course characterised by abscess formation. We present nine representative cases, each with an abscess at a separate site (lung, skin, bone/ joint, prostate, parotid gland, liver, spleen, brain and orbits). Using these cases

False iliac artery aneurysms on a psoas abscess revealing tuberculosis disease: About a case report and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Tuberculosis is re-emerging globally, including in Morocco. Common iliac artery aneurysms induced by tuberculosis are very rare and severe due to the risk of infection and hemorrhage, making treatment choice crucial. Only a few cases have been reported in the literature. CASE PRESENTATION: In this article, we report a new case involving a 54-year-old man admitted to the emergency department of the university hospital for skin necrosis in the groin area with a pulsating mass in front and altered general condition, associated with night fevers that led to a chest X-

A Rare Case of Disseminated Tuberculosis Presenting As a Frontal Headache and Photophobia in the UK.

Tuberculosis is a disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (TB), demonstrating a vast clinical spectrum that can potentially involve all systems of the body. We present the case of a female in her late 20s, with an employment background in healthcare. She recently moved to the UK from India. The patient presented to the emergency department with a frontal headache and photophobia. Initial CT head demonstrated asymmetrical right-sided grey-matter hypoattenuation. Subsequent imaging showed multiple rim-enhancing lesions throughout the cerebral and cerebellar neuroparenchyma, scattered miliar

Case report: A case of widespread soft tissue infection and multiple abscesses secondary to hidradenitis suppurativa inducing septic shock caused by Lawsonella clevelandensis in China.

Lawsonella clevelandensis is rare to associated with human infection, which may cause abscesses in abdominal cavity, liver, breast, and spine. Lawsonella clevelandensis is very difficult to be cultivated in regular manner; detection of 16S rRNA sequence is the main evidence for L. clevelandensis infection. The clinical manifestations of L. clevelandensis infection resemble other agents of Nocardia, Tuberculosis and non-tuberculous Mycobacterium (NTM) due to their morphologic similarities. Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory disorder, which affects the intertriginous skin an

Unilateral testicular tuberculosis in a kidney transplant recipient: a case report.

Tuberculosis (TB) of the genitourinary system is a rare form of extrapulmonary TB. Testicular TB is particularly uncommon among kidney transplantation (KT) recipients. Diagnosing testicular TB is challenging due to the nonspecific nature of clinical presentations and ambiguous imaging results. In this report, we describe a case involving a 36-year-old male KT recipient who presented with left scrotal pain. He had undergone a living donor KT 8 years prior and was receiving tacrolimus, mycophenolate mofetil, and prednisolone. Laboratory tests revealed anemia, leukocytosis, and elevated inflammat

Case report: Systemic tuberculosis with prostate involvement mimicking prostate cancer with multiple metastases on 18F-FDG and 18F-PSMA PET/CT.

BACKGROUND: Prostate tuberculosis is a common form of urogenital tuberculosis that occurs in men. Clinical and imaging manifestations of prostate tuberculosis are atypical, which often need to be differentiated from benign prostatic hyperplasia, a prostate malignant tumor, and a urinary tract infection. Although prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) is considered a specific biomarker for prostate cancer, it is also found within tuberculosis tissues that may be stimulated by angiogenic factors. An abnormal PSMA uptake on positron emission tomography combined with computed tomography (PET/CT

De novo primary malignant lymphoma of the dura following recurrent episodes of subdural abscess presenting as chronic subdural hematoma: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Chronic inflammation of the thorax, as in tuberculosis-related pyothorax, can cause secondary malignant lymphomas. However, primary malignant lymphoma of the central nervous system, specifically of the dura mater, developing after intracranial infection or inflammation has rarely been reported. Herein, the authors describe a case of primary dural lymphoma that developed secondary to subdural empyema, with an initial presentation mimicking a chronic subdural hematoma. OBSERVATIONS: A 51-year-old man had undergone single burr hole drainage for subdural empyema 2 years prior. The pat
