[On two cases of systemic listeriosis without dominant neurological compromise].

Listeria monocytogenes is a Gram-positive aerobic bacterium; found ubiquitously in nature; which mainly affects newborns, older adults, immunosuppressed patients and pregnant women. However, Listeria disease can occur in the healthy population. Invasive listeriosis has three dominant clinical forms, bacteremia, neurolisteriosis and maternal-neonatal infection. Localized forms are infrequently described. The disease occurs mainly secondary to the consumption of contaminated food, including unpasteurized milk or cheese, and occurs in the form of isolated cases or outbreaks, usually beginning a f

Concomitant Listeria monocytogenes and Streptococcus equinus brain abscess in an immunocompetent individual: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Listeria monocytogenes brain abscess is a rare phenomenon that is common in immunocompromised patients. Streptococcus equinus brain abscess has never been reported in the literature to our knowledge. In this case report, we describe a case of brain abscess secondary to Listeria monocytogenes and Streptococcus equinus in an immunocompetent patient with transient low CD4 count. CASE PRESENTATION: A 27-year-old white, male patient, previously healthy, nonalcoholic, and occasional smoker, presented to the emergency department for confusion and headache. The patient was found to have a

Relevance of microbiological cultures of cord blood and placental swabs in the rapid diagnosis of preterm newborn infection due to Listeria monocytogenes: A case report.

Listeria monocytogenes (Lm) is a Gram-positive bacterium causing listeriosis, a rare but severe foodborne infection, particularly impactful during pregnancy. Maternal-fetal transmission can lead to adverse fetal outcomes, yet symptoms in mothers may be nonspecific, delaying intervention. Despite the severity, the mechanisms of vertical transmission remain unclear. This report describes a case of rapid Lm diagnosis in a preterm newborn using cord blood and placental swabs. A 31-week pregnant woman presented with abdominal pain, diarrhea, and reduced fetal movements after consuming raw sushi. La

A case report on imaging findings of rare segmental necrotizing granulomatous neuritis of leprosy involving ulnar nerve.

INTRODUCTION: Segmental necrotizing granulomatous neuritis (SNGN) is a rare complication of leprosy involving peripheral nerves. It can appear alone in cases of pure neuritic leprosy or in combination with cutaneous lesions. CASE PRESENTATION: A 15-year-old female diagnosed with borderline tuberculoid leprosy who received prior multidrug therapy presented 2 years later with occasional pain and tingling sensations along the inner aspect of her right arm and forearm. Imaging findings suggested SNGN, which was corroborated by cytopathological examination. She was considered relapsed from leprosy

Pathogenomic profile and clonal diversity of potential zoonotic MRSA-CC7-ST789-t091-SCCmecV from human skin and soft tissue infections.

The whole genome sequence (WGS) of prevalent MRSA strains harboring mecA gene obtained from skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) in Nigerian hospitals were profiled for pathogenomic structure and evaluated for clonal diversity. The two MRSA strains identified among 66 isolated multi-drug resistant S. aureus from a collection of 256 clinical samples were phenotyped for antibiotic resistance and genotyped for mecA, SCCmec, and spa types. The mecA positive MRSA was analysed using whole-genome sequencing for resistomes, virulomes, phylogenomic profiles and clonal diversity. The identified MRSA-

Comprehensive study on human brucellosis seroprevalence and Brucella species distribution in Iran (1970-2023).

Brucellosis is a zoonotic bacterial disease that causes enormous economic losses in livestock populations and severe debilitation in humans globally. This study analyzes the seroprevalence of human brucellosis in Iran from 1970 to 2023, revealing key epidemiological trends based on data from 20,046 individuals. Through serological, culture, and molecular tests, it identifies the Brucella species affecting humans over five decades. The findings emphasize the need for ongoing monitoring and improved disease control efforts. Subsequently, we cultured specimens from seropositive individuals who ex

Fatal Feline Leukemia Virus-Associated Enteritis in a Wild Eurasian Lynx (Lynx lynx) in Germany.

The Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx), a widespread wild felid on the Eurasian continent, is currently classified as "critically endangered" in Germany. Understanding the impact of infectious agents is of particular importance for the continued conservation of these animals, especially regarding pathogens with broad host ranges and risk of interspecies transmission. Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) is known to infect wild and domestic felids worldwide, including several species of lynx, but it has not been reported thus far in the Eurasian lynx. In September 2020, a 16-month-old female Eurasian lynx from

Cat-scratch disease: a rare cause of osteomyelitis.

Cat-scratch disease is a zoonosis caused by Bartonella henselae, characterised by regional lymphadenopathy. Rarer presentations, such as osteomyelitis, can occur. We present an adolescent girl with severe right lumbar pain and fever, without animal contacts or recent travels. On examination, pain on flexion of torso, movement limitation and marked lordosis were noted, but there were no inflammatory signs, palpable masses or lymph nodes. Serological investigations revealed elevated inflammatory markers. Imaging revealed a paravertebral abscess with bone erosion. Several microbiological agents we

Unusual presentation of cat scratch disease: case report.

Cat scratch disease (CSD) is an infection caused by Bartonella henselae, presents with non-specific symptoms like lymphadenopathy, fever, and fatigue. It can progress to disseminated disease, leading to complications such as liver and splenic micro abscesses, osteomyelitis, encephalitis, and uveitis. Diagnosis is challenging due to varied presentations and limited tests. Treatment involves supportive care, with severe cases requiring antimicrobial therapy. In this report, we present a case of Cat scratch disease characterized by an atypical clinical manifestation, hepatosplenic and paravertebr

Paws and Pathogens: A Multidisciplinary Approach Through Bartonella henselae Endocarditis and Hepatosplenic T-Cell Lymphoma.

Bartonella species are gram-negative coccobacilli that are globally recognized as significant pathogens causing zoonotic infections. Among Bartonella species, B. henselae, B. quintana, and B. bacilliformis are prominent pathogens causing infections in humans, often manifesting as infective endocarditis. Bartonella endocarditis can pose diagnostic challenges due to its indolent presentation and limitations of standard microbiological culture techniques to identify the organism. We report a case of a 23-year-old male, who initially presented with the manifestations of hepatosplenic T-cell lympho

Bartonella henselae Hepatic Abscesses and Associated Osteomyelitis in a Pediatric Patient.

Bartonella henselae is a Gram-negative bacillus transmitted to humans via cat saliva or scratch. Cat scratch disease, the typical clinical manifestation of B. henselae infection, presents as localized cutaneous or regional lymphadenopathy. Rare, atypical presentations, generally reflecting bloodborne disseminated disease, can include hepatosplenic, cardiac, ocular, neurologic, or musculoskeletal involvement. Here, we present a case of disseminated B. henselae with hepatic abscesses and associated ischial osteomyelitis in an immunocompetent 2-year-old male patient. Although osteomyelitis is a r

Cat Scratch Disease in Pediatrics: Who Has Systemic Involvement?

BACKGROUND: Bartonella henselae is the agent responsible for cat scratch disease (CSD). Although lymphadenopathy is typically the defining symptom, some patients develop potentially severe systemic compromise. It is unknown why some patients progress to systemic disease. The objective of this study was to describe the clinical, epidemiologic and laboratory characteristics of children with CSD and to analyze the differences between systemic versus localized infections. METHODS: Patients were identified by a retrospective review of medical records at a tertiary pediatric care hospital in Buenos

Causes of morbidity and mortality in wild cottontail rabbits in the eastern United States, 2013-2022.

Interest in causes of mortality of free-ranging, native North American lagomorphs has grown with the emergence of rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus 2 (RHDV2). Over the years 2013-2022, the Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study received 119 Sylvilagus spp. case submissions from the central and eastern United States, comprising 147 rabbits. Most (86%) of these submissions occurred after detecting RHDV2 in the United States in 2020. Laboratory data from these rabbits were retrospectively evaluated for major causes, contributors to mortality, and pathogen detections. Gross and histologic

Characterisation of Pasteurella multocida Strains from Different Lesions in Rabbits.

Pasteurellosis, a disease caused by Pasteurella multocida, is responsible for economic losses in rabbit industrial farms due to rhinitis, conjunctivitis, pneumonia, metritis, mastitis, orchitis, subcutaneous abscesses, otitis, encephalitis, and septicaemic forms. Although the occurrence of the disease is conditioned by predisposing factors that affect the rabbit immune response, the strains of P. multocida involved in the infection may have a different pathogenic ability. Therefore, typing of strains spread among the rabbits is important to assess their pathogenic potential. The aim of this st
