Socioeconomic and clinical factors associated with odontogenic infection types among hospitalised patients in Periurban Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Odontogenic infections may progress to life-threatening complications if not managed promptly, and socioeconomic circumstances have been linked to their presentation, particularly where access to dental care is limited. Because every patient studied was already hospitalised, this analysis addresses the clinical type of infection at presentation, not the risk of developing one. METHODOLOGY: A retrospective cross-sectional review of hospital records was undertaken at the Allied Ward of Sunyani Teaching Hospital (January 2021 to January 2025). Of 811 consecutive admissions, 525 were

[A CASE OF CORPUS CAVERNOSUM ABSCESS CAUSED BY URETHRAL DILATION FOR URETHRAL STRICTURE].

A 67-year-old man presented to another clinic with a weak urinary stream. Urethral dilation was attempted, but insertion was difficult. Urethroscopy revealed a penile urethral stricture with a false passage. He later developed urinary retention and, after suprapubic cystostomy, was referred to us. Retrograde urethrography demonstrated an approximately 4-cm penile stricture with contrast extravasation into the corpora cavernosa, and contrast-enhanced MRI revealed a corpus cavernosum abscess measuring approximately 33 mm in maximal diameter. Because simultaneous abscess drainage, fistula repair,

Scalp and Tongue Necrosis as Rare Manifestations of Giant Cell Arteritis Complicated with a Preauricular Abscess.

Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is a systemic vasculitis that involves cranial arteries, the aorta, and its proximal branches, characterized by granulomatous infiltration of the arterial walls. GCA predominantly occurs in older adults, typically those over the age of 50. The etiology of GCA-associated vasculitis remains elusive; however, current evidence underscores the complex interplay of genetic and epigenetic drivers with immunological and non-immunological mechanisms in orchestrating the inflammatory response and vascular remodeling. Clinical manifestations of GCA are notably heterogeneous, si

Paradoxical reactions during treatment of miliary tuberculosis: a 25-year single-centre case series and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Paradoxical reactions during otherwise effective anti-tuberculosis treatment can resemble treatment failure or drug resistance. Their frequency and clinical spectrum in miliary tuberculosis are incompletely characterised. AIMS: To describe the timing, manifestations, management and outcomes of paradoxical reactions identified in a defined cohort of patients with miliary tuberculosis and to place these events in the context of the published literature. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the records of 63 patients with miliary tuberculosis managed at a single centre between 1981

Expanding the clinical spectrum of Lemierre syndrome and Lemierre-like septic internal jugular vein thrombophlebitis: a four-case series.

INTRODUCTION: Lemierre syndrome is a rare but potentially life-threatening condition, characterized by septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein and classically following an oropharyngeal infection. Although traditionally associated with young, otherwise healthy adults and Fusobacterium necrophorum infection, contemporary reports increasingly recognize a broader clinical spectrum, including culture-negative and Lemierre-like presentations. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe four patients with classic Lemierre syndrome or Lemierre-like septic internal jugular vein thrombophlebitis manag

How to Avoid Misdiagnosing Primary Spinal Epidural Abscess as Spinal Epidural Hematoma: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Spinal epidural abscess (SEA) is an easily misdiagnosed disease. We report a case of primary SEA (PSEA) that was misdiagnosed as spinal epidural hematoma (SEH) and analyze the reasons. The misdiagnosis was confirmed intraoperatively. Comprehensive analysis is crucial for the diagnosis of PSEA and its differential diagnosis from SEH.

Case Report: A pediatric case of multifocal Streptococcus intermedius brain abscesses as the initial manifestation of SMAD4-associated juvenile polyposis-hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia overlap syndrome.

Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) is a rare genetic disease characterized by epistaxis, telangiectasias, and arteriovenous malformations (AVMs). Clinical diagnosis of HHT is typically guided by fulfillment of the Curaçao criteria. HHT is a known risk factor for brain abscesses in the pediatric population, particularly in those with pulmonary AVMs, where intrapulmonary right-to-left shunting permits septic emboli to seed the brain. We report the case of a 9-year-old girl with asthma and chronic sinusitis who presented with 5 days of congestion, cough, and worsening headache in the set

Recurrent Invasive Staphylococcus aureus Infections in a Non-Neutropenic Hemodialysis Patient With Myelodysplastic Syndrome: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) may be overlooked in patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD) because anemia is commonly attributed to renal anemia and treated with erythropoiesis-stimulating agents. MDS is also associated with an increased risk of bacterial infections due to neutropenia and qualitative immune dysfunction. We report recurrent invasive methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) infections in a patient undergoing HD with concomitant MDS. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient was a 76-year-old man undergoing HD for end-stage kidney disease due to nephrosclerosis wh

Assessment of Thoracic Ultrasound as a Diagnostic Tool for Lower Respiratory Tract Disorders in Sheep.

Lower respiratory tract diseases (LRTDs) are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in sheep. Diagnosis is challenging not only because clinical signs are often mild or absent under field conditions, but also because adult sheep may develop a wide range of diseases affecting the lower airways with overlapping clinical presentations. This study evaluated the diagnostic performance of distance observation, comprehensive clinical examination, and thoracic ultrasonography (TUS) in sheep with suspected LRTDs, using post-mortem findings as the reference standard. A total of 103 sheep from differen

Retroperitoneoscopic lymphatic disconnection for non-filarial chyluria in Vietnamese adults: a case series.

INTRODUCTION: Retroperitoneal laparoscopic surgery is a widely applied technique in the management of renal, adrenal, ureteral, and retroperitoneal lymphatic disorders. A representative condition is chyluria, a rare disease caused by a lymphatic-urinary fistula, most commonly involving the ureter and renal pelvis. The retroperitoneal approach provides direct access to the affected structures while minimizing intra-abdominal manipulation, thereby reducing the risks of bowel adhesions and visceral injury. This technique enables ligation, excision, or suturing of abnormal lymphatic vessels, poten

Invasive Non-typhoidal Salmonella Infections in Adults: Clinical Features, Focal Disease, and Antimicrobial Resistance in a Turkish Tertiary-Care Center.

OBJECTIVE: Invasive non-typhoidal Salmonella (iNTS) infection may cause severe systemic and focal disease, particularly in patients with comorbidities or immunosuppression. Data on the clinical features and antimicrobial resistance patterns of iNTS infections in Türkiye remain limited. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical and microbiological characteristics of adult patients with microbiologically confirmed iNTS infection at a tertiary-care center in Türkiye. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective, single-center case series included adult patients diagnosed with iNTS infection at a te

[Tubo-ovarian abscess fistulized to the abdominal wall, due to a Klebsiella pneumoniae infection].

Tubo-ovarian abscess (TOA) is a serious complication of pelvic inflammatory disease, most often of polymicrobial origin. It may rarely progress to complicated forms, particularly in cases of delayed diagnosis or in patients with underlying comorbidities. We report a rare complication of TOA characterized by subcutaneous abdominal wall fistulization, associated with an unusual Klebsiella pneumoniae infection. This pathogen, classically involved in urinary and gastrointestinal infections, is rarely described in TOA. Management combining drainage of the collection and prolonged targeted antibioti

Contained transverse colonic perforation caused by an ingested fish bone presenting as chronic abdominal pain: a case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Foreign body ingestion is common; however, gastrointestinal perforation is rare and often poses a diagnostic challenge, particularly when symptoms are chronic and nonspecific. Colonic perforation due to ingested foreign bodies is uncommon, with the transverse colon being an especially rare site due to its mobility and wide lumen. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 19-year-old male who presented with central abdominal pain and intermittent diarrhea for 1 month, followed by acute worsening of abdominal pain, fever, nausea, and vomiting over the proceeding 3

Successful interval laparoscopic appendectomy for walled-off perforated appendicitis during pregnancy: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Acute appendicitis is the most common non-obstetric surgical emergency during pregnancy, with an incidence of approximately 0.067% (1 in 1493 pregnancies). Although prompt laparoscopic appendectomy is the standard treatment, optimal management of walled-off perforated appendicitis (WOPA) during pregnancy is unclear. CASE PRESENTATION: A 28-year-old woman presented with a 1-week history of abdominal pain and fever at 9 weeks of gestation. Ultrasonography demonstrated an ill-defined right lower quadrant mass, and contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed WOPA with a localized

Isolated left-lobe metastatic hepatic abscess due to portal pyemia from microperforated ascending colon carcinoma: a rare case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Liver abscess-like lesions are commonly managed as primary hepatobiliary infections; however, colorectal cancer can be an occult source, particularly when portal pyemia follows a microperforated tumor. Diagnostic complexity increases when right-sided colon cancer presents with an apparently isolated left-lobe hepatic collection mimicking foregut disease, especially in settings where anaerobic culture and immunohistochemistry are limited. CASE PRESENTATION: A middle-aged woman in her fifth decade with an 8-month history of intermittent right iliac fossa pain and re

Incidental giant subserosal lipoma of the transverse colon with fat necrosis and abscess formation discovered during emergency laparotomy for blunt abdominal trauma: a case report.

Giant subserosal colonic lipomas are rare, benign tumors that are typically asymptomatic. However, they can mimic malignancy or become complicated by inflammation and necrosis. We present a 59-year-old male who underwent emergency laparotomy for a traumatic splenic rupture following blunt abdominal trauma. During surgery, a 12 × 10 cm incidental mass in the transverse colon was discovered, mimicking a malignant tumor. Due to gross purulent intra-abdominal contamination from an intratumoral abscess and patient instability, a segmental colonic resection with an end colostomy was performed alongs
