BACKGROUND: Probiotics confer health benefits to the host. However, its clinical effect on irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is controversial.
AIMS: This study was aimed to evaluate the effects of Saccharomyces boulardii on quality of life (QOL) and symptoms in patients with diarrhea-predominant IBS or mixed-type IBS.
METHODS: Sixty-seven patients with IBS were randomized either to receive S. boulardii at 2×10 live cells as a daily dose (n=34), or placebo (n=33) for 4 weeks. IBS-QOL was assessed at the beginning and end of the treatment phase. IBS-related symptoms, bowel movement frequency, and

BACKGROUND: Extreme stool forms (1 and 2, or 6 and 7 of the Bristol stool scale) are frequent in patients with irritable bowel syndrome and are associated with colonic transit, but it is not known whether these alterations influence rectal reservoir function.
AIMS: To investigate rectal reservoir function by assessing magnetic resonance imaging reconstructions of rectal volume in healthy subjects and patients with irritable bowel syndrome, and to establish whether it varies depending on the bowel habits of the patients.
METHODS: Twelve healthy subjects and 20 patients with irritable bowel sy

OBJECTIVES: An international multicenter, prospective, non-interventional, 2-month study characterized acute pain attacks in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
METHODS: Adult patients meeting the Rome III IBS diagnostic criteria with a history of ≥ 3 pain attacks per month participated in a survey that captured daily and episodic information regarding IBS symptoms and pain attacks for 2 months. Acute pain attacks were defined as a sudden onset or increase in the intensity of IBS abdominal pain with a minimum intensity of 4 (0-10 scale).
RESULTS: The majority (84%) of the 158 patie

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Although controversial, probiotics and dietary fiber are commonly used for patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). We evaluated the effects of multistrain probiotics on the symptoms of IBS to determine whether the addition of dietary fi ber had an additive effect on constipation-predominant IBS.
METHODS: A total of 142 participants who met the Rome III criteria were recruited and randomized into a control group or a test group. Participants in the control group received multistrain probiotic fermented milk with Streptococcus thermophilus, Lactobacillus acidophilus and B

BACKGROUND: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common gastrointestinal disease. Detailed clinical characteristics of patients with different IBS subtypes have not been well established. Our aim was to examine the prevalence and risk factors of IBS and its subtypes in Japanese adults.
METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional study of Japanese workers who visited a clinic for a routine health check-up and asked them to fill out a self-report questionnaire. Irritable bowel syndrome and its subtypes were defined by ROME III criteria. A logistic regression model was used to identify risk factors.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a chronic disorder that affects primarily female patients and is thought also to afflict approximately 7%-10% of the population of the Western World. Although bowel habits may change over the course of years, patients with IBS are characterized according to their predominant bowel habit, constipation (IBS-C), diarrhea (IBS-D), or mixed type (IBS-M), and treatments are focused toward the predominant symptom. Current treatments for IBS-C have included fiber, antispasmodics, osmotic and stimulant laxatives, and the now severely limited 5-HT(4) agonist tegaserod.

OBJECTIVES: Though the greatest proportion of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) patients report a mixed bowel pattern (IBS-Mixed), no available therapies have been rigorously evaluated in this subgroup. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of the 5-HT(4) agonist tegaserod in women with IBS-Mixed and IBS with constipation (IBS-C).
METHODS: This prospective, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, multicenter study was conducted in 100 centers in North America, South America, and Europe. Women with IBS-Mixed or IBS-C received tegaserod 6 mg or placebo twice daily. The primary

BACKGROUND: To investigate non-patient irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) change to IBS and to determine factors predictive of the onset of IBS, individual biological factors, psychological factors, behavioral factors, and environmental factors were examined.
METHODS: The subjects were 105 non-patient IBS (male = 59, female = 46, average age:21.49 +/- 2.37), including 68 of the diarrhea-predominant type and 37 of the constipation-predominant type selected from 1,409 university and technical college students by use of a questionnaire based on the Rome II diagnostic criteria. Renzapride is a novel drug currently under clinical evaluation for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Renzapride is a mixed 5-hydroxytryptamine type 4 (5-HT4) agonist and 5-HT3 receptor antagonist that has a stimulatory effect on gastrointestinal motility and transit, as established by in vivo and in vitro studies. Its therapeutic efficacy, tolerability and safety have been evaluated in diabetic gastroparesis in a single study, as well as in IBS in a few other studies. Phase II studies indicated potential beneficial effects on symptoms and bowel habits in patients with constipati

OBJECTIVES: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) patients show pain hypersensitivity and hypercontractility in response to colonic or rectal distention. Aims were to determine whether predominant bowel habits and IBS symptom severity are related to pain sensitivity, colon motility, or smooth muscle tone.
METHODS: One hundred twenty-nine patients classified as IBS with diarrhea (IBS-D, N = 44), IBS with constipation (IBS-C, N = 29), mixed IBS (IBS-M, N = 45), and unspecified IBS (IBS-U, N = 11) based on stool consistency, and 30 healthy controls (HC) were studied. A manometric catheter containing a

BACKGROUND: Evolution of bowel habit in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is not well known.
AIM: To evaluate the change over time of bowel habit in IBS patients followed-up during 1 year.
METHODS: Five hundred and seventeen patients with IBS were prospectively included in an observational study with five evaluations over a 1-year period. Symptoms were recorded daily in diary cards during four 4-week periods along the study. Bristol Stool Scale (BSS) was used to define bowel habit.
RESULTS: Four-hundred patients completed the study. Rome II showed low-moderate agreement (42%) with BSS to defin

AIM: To study prevalence of colon diverticula (CD) and phenotypical features of patients with this anomaly.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: At the first stage of the study we analysed colon x-ray evidence for 3 years to assess prevalence of CD. At the second stage we examined 59 patients with CD. Sixty patients with idiopathic constipation and 48 patients with irritable colon syndrome served control.
RESULTS: We discovered the following independent factors associated with a high CD risk: history of CD in the relatives of the patients (OR 24.6; 95% CI 5.23-116.23; p = 0.0001) and age of the patient (OR

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is subtyped as IBS with diarrhea (IBS-D) or IBS with constipation (IBS-C) based on Rome II guidelines. The remaining group is considered as having mixed IBS (IBS-M). There is no standard definition of an alternator (IBS-A), in which bowel habit changes over time. Our aim was to use Rome II criteria to prospectively assess change in bowel habit for more than 1 year to understand IBS-A.
METHODS: Female patients (n=317) with IBS entering a National Institutes of Health treatment trial were studied at baseline with questionnaires and 2-week daily

The inherent variability of symptoms and motor abnormalities in patients with the irritable bowel syndrome has hampered the demonstration of motor abnormalities that could underlie symptoms. The aim in the current study was to evaluate whether altered regional capacitance or transit of solid residue through the unprepared human gut were factors in the diarrhea of patients with the irritable bowel syndrome. In 10 such patients and in 5 healthy controls, gastric and small bowel transits were evaluated scintigraphically by means of a mixed meal containing 99mTc-labeled resin pellets. Regional col
