The Western Ghats of India support a diverse assemblage of Ixodid ticks, including multiple vectors of Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD), yet comprehensive data from forest-fringe landscapes outside recognised outbreak zones remain limited. To address this gap, we undertook a multi-state, cross-sectional survey across 44 forest-fringe villages distributed within seven ecological grids spanning Goa, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu during peak nymphal activity (December–February). Standardized flagging method yielded 10,350 ticks representing 24 taxa across four genera, including 12 r

The increasing incidence of emerging and re-emerging viral infections is a significant global public health concern, highlighting the importance of developing effective, broad-spectrum antivirals. Direct-acting antivirals targeting viral polymerases are promising therapeutic agents. In the present study, we report the broad-spectrum in vitro antiviral activity of a novel small molecule, termed FNDR-11124, against SARS-CoV-2, Influenza, Kyasanur forest disease virus, as well as representative flaviviruses and alphaviruses. The structure-activity relationship guided chemical modifications demons

Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD) is a tick-borne zoonotic disease in India that causes fatal hemorrhagic fever in humans. Despite its complex network of hosts and vectors, the interspecific interactions shaping its disease ecology remain underexplored. We aimed to identify these interactions and pathways aiding disease spread within connected landscapes and across geographic barriers. Through a systematic review and meta-analysis, we mapped KFD locations, vectors' feeding niches, and disease hosts. We found 53 KFD associated species from Western Ghats (active disease location) and 27 potentially

BACKGROUND: Kyasanur Forest disease (KFD) is a tick-borne viral haemorrhagic fever in which thrombocytopaenia and transaminitis are well recognized, but the basis of coagulation abnormalities remains incompletely understood. Isolated prolongation of the activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) with a normal prothrombin time (PT) has been frequently observed, although the mechanism remains unclear.
CASE SERIES: We describe nine patients with confirmed KFD who had isolated prolonged APTT with normal PT during the acute phase of illness. The patients ranged in age from 29 to 78 years, and se

BACKGROUND: Major bleeding contributes substantially to morbidity in Kyasanur Forest Disease, but predictors of severe hemorrhage remain poorly defined. We aimed to determine whether prolonged baseline activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) independently predicts major bleeding in patients with Kyasanur Forest Disease.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study at a tertiary-care referral center in southern India, including adults (≥15 years) hospitalized with RT-PCR-confirmed Kyasanur Forest Disease from January 2019 to May 2025. Major bleeding was defined as a clinically signi

The present study was undertaken with the objective of performing comparative sequence analysis of the envelope (E) gene of Kyasanur forest disease virus (KFDV) vaccine strain P9605 with the circulating field strains. The study was taken up as the currently used KFDV vaccine strain, KFDV P9605, was isolated in the 1960s. For this study, we designed two sets of primers targeting the complete amplification of the E gene of KFDV. The sequencing was performed by the Sanger method, and the deduced sequence of the vaccine virus was deposited in GenBank with accession number PX067005. This sequence o

OBJECTIVES: Platelet hyperreactivity and thrombocytopenia are strongly correlated with elevated mortality rates in sepsis, particularly in cases of septic shock. This study aimed to predict pediatric sepsis and distinguish it from septic shock by profiling the platelet proteome.
METHODS: We conducted a comparative proteomic analysis of platelet protein expression in five individuals with sepsis, five individuals with septic shock and five healthy subjects, utilizing mass spectrometry (DIA-MS).
RESULTS: Our proteomic analysis identified that 316 and 83 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs)

BACKGROUND: Crimean-Congo Haemorrhagic Fever (CCHF) is a severe tick-borne viral disease. Increasing cases in West Africa suggest potential undetected circulation in Nigeria.
METHODS: A One Health Joint Risk Assessment was conducted to identify transmission pathways and assess the likelihood and impact of human CCHF infections at the human-animal-environment interface in Nigeria. Risk framing involved developing structured questions for potential Crimean-Congo Haemorrhagic Fever virus (CCHFV) transmission scenarios. A scoping review was conducted and median seroprevalence values were reported

BACKGROUND: Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a severe tick-borne viral infection with a high mortality rate. The multi-inflammatory index (MII), consisting of MII-1, MII-2 and MII-3, has been proposed as a prognostic biomarker in infectious diseases. However, its role in CCHF prognosis remains unclear.
METHODS: This retrospective observational study analysed 290 CCHF patients admitted to Erzurum Regional Training and Research Hospital between January 2019 and September 2024. The MIIs were calculated from blood samples obtained on the day of hospital admission. Patients were categori

Ticks continue to spread worldwide transmitting pathogens that affect animal production and human health. With the transboundary movement of herdsmen and their livestock through the borders into Ghana, there is likely to be the introduction of new tick species and their associated pathogens. This review provides information on the distribution of livestock ticks and tick-borne pathogens, emphasising the threat to both human and animal health. A search was done using terms about tick-borne pathogens and livestock ticks in Ghana from Google Scholar, PubMed and Scopus. This review examined inform

BACKGROUND: Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a tick-borne disease endemic to Africa, Southern Europe, and Western Asia. Its main vectors, Hyalomma ticks, can spread to and possibly establish populations in non-endemic regions via migratory birds.
METHODS: We summarized the association between migratory birds and Hyalomma ticks by analysing spatial and temporal patterns in tick prevalence and infestation intensity on migratory birds through a systematic review of studies conducted in Europe, Western Asia, and Northern Africa between 1954 and 2022.
RESULTS: We reviewed 37 studies and

BACKGROUND: The Ebola virus health emergency in 2014 highlighted the urgent need to establish a hospital network in Spain for the management of high-risk infectious diseases. Currently, the only autochthonous high-risk infectious disease in Spain is Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV). Until 2025, 10 of the 20 nationally reported cases (50%) had occurred in Salamanca province. In response, the University Hospital of Salamanca (Complejo Asistencial Universitario de Salamanca [CAUSA]) implemented an adaptation process to optimize the safe care of CCHFV-infected patients.
METHODS: We c

Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is the most widespread tick-borne viral disease of humans, with major public-health implications across western China, South Asia, the Middle East, south-eastern Europe, and Africa. Although uncommon, infection during pregnancy is often severe and associated with high maternal and fetal mortality. This mini review synthesizes 38 documented cases of CCHF in pregnancy to identify consistent patterns in clinical presentation, outcomes, and management. Maternal survival was recorded in 68% of cases, whereas fetal or neonatal survival was reported in only 39%

Crimean-Congo Haemorrhagic Fever is a severe tick-borne viral disease with a high fatality rate. This study aimed to advance the understanding of CCHF virus (CCHFV) in terms of geographical spread and genotypic characterization by investigating its detection in ticks collected from cattle, one year after the first detection of CCHFV in Corsica. From 2024 to 2025, we collected ticks from cattle, with standardised sampling occurring twice per month. Ticks were screened for CCHFV RNA by RTq-PCR. Genome sequencing and phylogenetic analyses were performed. Blood samples from a subset of these cattl

Tick-borne diseases pose a significant global threat, with individuals in livestock-related occupations at high risk. This study assessed the risk factors for tick-borne viral diseases among pastoralist herdsmen and abattoir workers in Kwara State of Nigeria, a critical region for livestock movement. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 374 livestock workers (125 herdsmen; 249 abattoir workers), using structured questionnaires and observational assessments. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and multivariable logistic regression. We identified a high prevalence of risky pra

The Nairoviridae family of segmented negative-sense RNA viruses includes the serious human pathogen Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV), associated with a case/fatality rate of up to 40% for which no approved vaccines or treatments exist. Nairoviruses internalize via endocytosis and pass through the endolysosomal network, exploiting the changing ionic environment to promote envelope fusion. Fusion is influenced by hydrogen (H+) and potassium ions (K+), which increase in concentration as endosomes mature, regulated by host ion channels. Using the model nairovirus Hazara virus (HAZV)
