OBJECTIVE: To investigate the extraintestinal manifestations of non-typhoidal Salmonellae (NTS) infection in immunocompetent infants and children.
METHOD: The study took place at the University General Hospital at Heraklion, Crete. Over a 10-year period from 1993-2002 we studied 1087 patients, of whom 443 were children less than 14 years old, with a culture-proven diagnosis of NTS infection. OBJECTIVE: . To describe a case of vaccine associated paralytic poliomyelitis (VAPP) and relate this to current UK immunization policy.
METHOD: A case report in which the clinical course and factors leading to the diagnosis are described and then related to reports of paralytic poliomyelitis in the literature.
RESULTS: The child in this case was left severely disabled by paralytic poliomyelitis. The pathological process was related to a pararectal abscess needing urgent drainage shortly after immunisation.
CONCLUSION: The skeletal muscle damage due to the presence of the pararectal abscess

OBJECTIVE: To review the presentation, methods of diagnosis, and incidence of concomitant urological abnormalities in children with acute focal bacterial nephritis (AFBN, also known as lobar nephronia, a severe nonliquefactive infection involving one or more renal lobules).

We describe a 34-year-old male with pulmonary embolism. The patient had been admitted to a peripheral hospital for incision and drainage of a very large ischio-rectal abscess. Four days after successful surgical intervention and during a change of dressings he developed a massive pulmonary artery embolism. Three male patients without accompanying diseases, 27, 47, and 52 years of age, were admitted with fever of unknown origin. Focal liver disease was seen on ultrasound and the diagnosis of an abscess was confirmed by sonographically-guided fine-needle puncture. Microaerophilic streptococci were found in two cases, streptococcus viridans once. Two patients had cryptogenic abscesses; one had previously undergone surgery for a rectal abscess. All three patients were cured of their condition by appropriate antibiotic coverage and evacuation of the abscess by needle aspiration.

We report the case of an African patient with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) who had a chronic cryptococcal rectal abscess with anal fistula and a disseminated neurologic and bony fungal disease, associated with pulmonary infiltration due to Pneumocystis carinii. The anal lesion was surgically excised because of failure of the medical treatment. Although clinical intestinal cryptococcal involvement is quite rare, the experience here recorded should draw physicians' attention to the possibility of an insidious disseminated disease in AIDS patients.
