Simulation of errors related to the VLBI transmitter on Genesis and their impact on the terrestrial reference frame.

BACKGROUND: During the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic, there was surge in reporting of COVID-19-associated mucormycosis cases. Government of India declared rhino-orbito-cerebral mucormycosis as a notifiable disease. Managing this condition posed a new challenge to clinicians. Management includes therapeutic drugs and aggressive surgical debridement. Even though prosthetic rehabilitation with zygomatic implants is one of the most conservative and effective options, owing to unpredictability of disease prognosis and financial burden for patients, rehabilitation with interim obturators is benef

Connective tissue and genetics in the pathogenesis of rectal prolapse: A scoping review.

AIM: Rectal prolapse can occur in individuals who lack the established risk factors (constipation, obstetric trauma and advanced age). A recognised association with hereditary connective tissue diseases may indicate a role for variants in connective tissue-related genes in the pathogenesis of the disease. This scoping review evaluates the evidence supporting this. METHODS: A scoping review was performed using a systematic search of Medline, Embase, CINAHL and The Cochrane Library in March 2026. Studies describing any of the following in the context of rectal prolapse were included: epidemiolo

Rectal Neuroendocrine Tumor Presenting as Refractory Chronic Pruritus Ani: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Primary neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) of the rectum are rare and often present with nonspecific gastrointestinal symptoms, making early diagnosis challenging. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 42-year-old male with persistent pruritus ani and mild rectal bleeding refractory to conventional treatment, ultimately diagnosed with a well-differentiated grade 1 rectal NET. CONCLUSION: This case underscores the importance of maintaining clinical suspicion for rare malignancies when evaluating persistent anorectal symptoms and highlights the critical role of endoscopic evaluati

Rising prevalence of venous thromboembolism in gastrointestinal cancers: a nationwide analysis of 205 million hospitalizations, 2016-2022.

BACKGROUND: Venous thromboembolism (VTE), encompassing deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), is a well-recognized complication of malignancy, yet comprehensive data on VTE prevalence across all gastrointestinal cancer (GIC) subtypes are lacking. METHODS: Using the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database from 2016 to 2022, we performed a cross-sectional analysis of 205,075,197 adult hospitalizations to quantify the prevalence and temporal trends of DVT, PE and VTE in GIC hospitalizations, and calculated the relative risk (RR) of VTE and inpatient death (IPD) in GICs compared

Bleeding rectal polyp as an atypical presentation of intestinal schistosomiasis: A case report from Egypt.

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis remains an important public health challenge in Egypt despite decades of control programs. Intestinal involvement is relatively common but usually presents with diffuse mucosal disease, ulcerations, or multiple polyps. A solitary bleeding rectal polyp as the sole manifestation is exceedingly rare and can be mistaken for inflammatory bowel disease or colorectal neoplasia. This report aims to highlight this diagnostic challenge within the Egyptian context. CASE PRESENTATION: A 28-year-old Egyptian male from a rural area presented with a 3-month history of intermitten

Case Report of Taeniasis with Gastric Manifestations on CT and Worm Expulsion Post CT Examination.

INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND: In March 2025, a 31-year-old female patient was admitted to Mangkang County People's Hospital in Tibet, complaining of upper abdominal pain for two days, which worsened after meals. She reported a habit of consuming raw beef. This case is unique as it highlights the diagnostic value of CT imaging in identifying taeniasis, particularly when worms are expelled post-CT examination. Previous imaging studies often lacked specific signs, with many cases only confirmed post-surgery. This case provides a valuable reference for the radiological characteristics of taeniasis. CA

Long-term performance evaluation and seasonal field calibration of a low-cost particulate matter sensor.

UNLABELLED: Low-cost air quality sensors (LCS) provide high-resolution monitoring with affordability and real-time data but require performance evaluation and calibration due to probable lower accuracy compared to reference instruments and sensitivity to meteorological factors such as air relative humidity and temperature. Although most studies on low-cost sensors have been conducted in Europe and America, we did not find any study in regions like Iran, where air pollution levels and meteorological conditions differ significantly. In this study, performance evaluation and calibration of a low-

Refractory Hemorrhagic Radiation Proctitis Managed With Sequential Endoscopic, Topical, and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy.

Chronic radiation proctitis is a recognized late complication of pelvic radiation therapy and may present with rectal bleeding, urgency, altered bowel habits, ulceration, and transfusion-requiring anemia. Management can be challenging when bleeding persists despite standard endoscopic therapy. We present the case of a 72-year-old man with a history of prostate cancer treated with radiation therapy in 2016 who developed refractory hemorrhagic radiation proctitis in 2023. He initially underwent three sessions of argon plasma coagulation (APC) for rectal bleeding but was later hospitalized with a

Radiation-Induced Proctitis and Hemorrhagic Cystitis: A Review of Management With Comparative Perspectives on Radiation Enteritis and Pneumonitis.

Radiation therapy is a cornerstone in the management of pelvic and thoracic malignancies, but injury to surrounding normal tissue remains a clinically significant source of late morbidity despite advances in treatment delivery. Radiation-induced proctitis and hemorrhagic cystitis are consequential pelvic toxicities, typically presenting months to years after treatment with rectal bleeding, diarrhea, urgency, tenesmus, hematuria, and irritative lower urinary tract symptoms. Beyond the pelvis, radiation enteritis and pneumonitis represent important gastrointestinal and pulmonary complications th

Towards credible digital twins for basic and preclinical research.

Atomoxetine (Strattera(R)) is a selective norepinephrine (noradrenaline) reuptake inhibitor that is not classified as a stimulant, and is indicated for use in patients with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Atomoxetine is effective and generally well tolerated. It is significantly more effective than placebo and standard current therapy and does not differ significantly from or is noninferior to immediate-release methylphenidate; however, it is significantly less effective than the extended-release methylphenidate formulation OROS(R) methylphenidate (hereafter referred to as osm

A Novel HPV-associated Mixed Neuroendocrine-Nonneuroendocrine Neoplasm of the Rectum.

High-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) is an established oncogenic driver, most commonly associated with oropharyngeal and anogenital squamous cell carcinomas. Although HPV has recently been implicated in a small subset of adenocarcinomas and small-cell neuroendocrine carcinomas of the anorectum, its involvement in both components of a gastrointestinal mixed neuroendocrine-nonneuroendocrine neoplasm (MiNEN) has not been previously described. We herein report a novel tumor, an HPV-associated MiNEN of the rectum in a 60-year-old woman. The patient presented for colonoscopy screening, during which

A Rare Encounter: Mammary-Like Gland Tissue in an Anal Polyp.

Anogenital mammary-like glands (AGMLGs) are normal structures in the anogenital region that can undergo pathologic changes similar to breast tissue. This case report presents a 54-year-old female with a complaint of worsening anorectal pain. Her initial physical exam revealed a 1 cm anal polyp. Pathology confirmed breast-like polypoid tissue with benign features, including intraductal papilloma, apocrine metaplasia, and fibrocystic change. The novelty of this case highlights that mammary-like glands can be found outside of the mammary line and may mimic lesions identical to counterparts in the

Rectal Prolapse as a Rare Presentation of Colorectal Cancer: Case Series and Clinical Perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Rectal prolapse is the protrusion of the rectum through the anal canal, commonly observed in older women with weakened pelvic floor muscles and anal sphincters. Clinical symptoms may include a painful, irreducible anal mass and rectal bleeding. Surgical intervention typically aims to restore normal anatomy through tumor resection and rectal fixation. The occurrence of colorectal cancer within rectal prolapse is rare and may present unique diagnostic and management challenges with distinct clinical implications. CASE SERIES: We present three cases of rectal prolapse associated with

A Case of Granulocyte Colony-stimulating Factor-producing Adenosquamous Carcinoma of the Ascending Colon.

We herein report a rare case of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF)-producing adenosquamous carcinoma of the ascending colon. An 80-year-old man was admitted to our hospital complaining of constipation and hypophagia. His medical history over the past nine years included chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, arteriosclerosis obliterans, and acute limb ischemia. He had no history of inflammatory bowel disease or other gastrointestinal conditions. Colonoscopy and contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed a tumor in the ascending colon. Biopsies were obtained from five different a

Adult Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis Presenting as an Isolated Rectal Polyp and Hematochezia.

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a rare disorder characterized by the abnormal proliferation and accumulation of Langerhans cells, which are specialized dendritic cells involved in antigen presentation. LCH most commonly involves the skin, bone, and lung. The gastrointestinal tract is an uncommon site of disease, and LCH presenting as a solitary colonic polyp is extremely rare. We present a case of a 53-year-old male with hematochezia who had a rectal polyp that was confirmed both histologically and immunohistochemically to be LCH. There was no evidence of systemic involvement of LCH.

Lower Gastrointestinal Bleeding Revealing an Early-Stage Primary Anorectal Melanoma: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Anorectal melanomas are rare and agressive malignant tumors of the anorectal region of the digestive tract. Due to their rarity and similarity to other more benign and common conditions, such as hemorrhoids, their diagnosis is often delayed, which worsens the prognosis of this aggressive disease. Histological evaluation with special immunohistochemical (IHC) staining is often essentiel to establish a confirmed diagnosis. In the localized stage, the primary treatment for this condition consists primarily of surgical resection combined with adjuvant immunotherapy. CASE PRESENTATIO

Mechanism of activation of an ancestral TEC kinase by PIP3.

BACKGROUND: The introduction of second-generation antipsychotics (SGAs) over the past 2 decades generated considerable optimism that better antipsychotic treatments for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder were possible. SGAs offer several tolerability benefits over first-generation antipsychotics (FGAs), particularly with respect to extrapyramidal symptoms. However, SGAs can induce serious metabolic dysregulations, especially in drug-naive, first-episode, and child and adolescent populations, with olanzapine and clozapine having the highest propensity to cause these abnormalities.
