In reality, the malignant potential of adenomas and the not-infrequent presence of cancer in larger polyps, require, for their removal, an oncologically correct operation with strict indication and accurate execution. Primary rectal lymphoma in childhood is rare. We report a case in a 10-year-old boy who presented with rectal bleeding and a single rectal polyp. Histologic examination, immunophenotyping and molecular genetic study of the polyp showed a diffuse B-cell lymphoma, Burkitt-like type. The literature on this topic is reviewed and pathologic examination of childhood rectal polyps is emphasized.

Non-traumatic subcutaneous emphysema (NSE) is a rare complication of procedures of the digestive tract. To the best of our knowledge, it has never been reported to occur after transanal surgery. Herein we present the first known case of NSE accompanied by retropneumoperitoneum and pneumomediastinum to develop after colonoscopy and full-thickness transanal removal of a rectal polyp.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The efficacy of peroral sustained-release indomethacin on rectal adenomas in colectomized patients with familial adenomatous polyposis and its toxicity were evaluated preliminarily.
METHODOLOGY: A total of seven colectomized patients with familial adenomatous polyposis were treated with peroral sustained-release indomethacin at the usual clinical doses. The numbers of rectal polyps before and after treatment and approximately one year after cessation of treatment were counted using a flexible colonoscope and compared.

Motilin-secreting neuroendocrine tumours have been rarely described. Immunohistochemical, biochemical and motility investigations were performed in a 62-year-old man with liver and bone metastases of a motilin-secreting neuroendocrine tumour originating from a rectal polyp removed 14 years previously. Rectal tubulopapillary polyps were diagnosed in eight dogs following proctoscopy and mucosal pinch biopsy. Histological examination of the pinch biopsies revealed evidence of malignant transformation in three of the cases. The remaining cases were diagnosed as benign polyps. Primary anorectal malignant melanoma is a fairly uncommon but highly malignant disease. This disease is sometimes mistaken for such benign conditions as either a hemorrhoid or rectal polyp. We herein describe a case of early primary malignant melanoma of the anal canal. In this case, magnetic resonance (MR) imaging was found to be useful for diagnosing the melanotic melanoma. We especially emphasize the usefulness of a fat-saturation MR image in distinguishing melanotic melanoma from other rectal tumors.

A 62-year-old man with a history of a resected rectal polyp was diagnosed 14 years later with right liver and multiple bone metastases. The liver biopsy showed a malignant epithelial tumor that was positive for neuron-specific enolase immunostaining and negative for chromogranin.
