The maximum volume of air tolerated within a rectal balloon was less in colitic patients than in normal subjects (P less than 0.001). Smaller volumes were tolerated by patients with a spontaneously bleeding mucosa than by those with less severe inflammation (P less than 0.001). Severe urgency of defaecation with incontinence was experienced by about half those with spontaneous mucosal haemorrhage but was infrequent among other colitics. A case of hyperchloremic acidosis in an infant with imperforate anus and rectourethral fistula, showing lethargy, tachypnea, vomiting, and dehydration, is reported. Surgical correction by abdominoperineal pull-through and division of the rectourethral fistula was performed after doing a cystocutaneostomy to eliminate the diversion of urine into the rectum.

Case reports are given of 37 patients treated between 1964 and 1976 because of carcinoma of the anus, and clinical signs and symptoms, therapy and prognosis are discussed. Most of the patients were 50-70 years old, women being more often afficted then men. Often the carcinoma was misdiagnosed as a benign disease. In 90 preparations of the human rectum, venous vessels were studied. In all age groups, newborns and children including, trabecular veins with cone-shaped protrusions, intimal "cushons" and microvalves were revealed. In the columnar zone, on the lateral walls of the anal canal, they form cavernous bodies in arterio-venous anastomoses. In elderly and old-aged persons, as a result of myoelastofibrosis, thinning of the cavernous vein walls and partial hollowing of their lacunae take place.

The effects of glucagon and secretin on food- or morphine-induced motor activity of the distal colon, rectum, and internal anal sphincter were investigated in 12 healthy subjects. To further study the effectiveness of cryosurgery of the anus, cryolesions were produced in the rectum of pigs and healing was followed by microangiography and histologic study. In addition, cryosurgery was used on 105 patients (35 as outpatients) with anal pathologic lesions. Results demonstrated that cryosurgery is an effective method of curing most anal lesions. One of the gynecologists' commonest findings at pelvic laparotomy is endometriosis. Data for 500 patients with Crohn's disease who underwent operations were analyzed (316 patients, 1966 to 1969; 184 patients, 1972 to 1973) by comparison of various anatomic disease locations (clinical pattern): (1) ileocolic, 225 patients; (2) small intestinal, 130 patients; (3) colonic, 127 patients; (4) anorectal, 18 patients.
