Omsk haemorrhagic fever virus (OHFV) is the agent leading to Omsk haemorrhagic fever (OHF), a viral disease currently only known in Western Siberia in Russia. The symptoms include fever, headache, nausea, muscle pain, cough and haemorrhages. The transmission cycle of OHFV is complex. Tick bites or contact with infected small mammals are the main source of infection. The Republic of Kazakhstan is adjacent to the endemic areas of OHFV in Russia and febrile diseases with haemorrhages occur throughout the country-often with unclear aetiology. In this study, we examined human cerebrospinal fluid sa

Dysfunctions of the somatosensory system are among the clinical signs that characterize a variety of polyglutamine or CAG-repeat diseases. Deficits within this system may hinder the perception of potential threats, be detrimental to somatomotor functions, and result in uncoordinated movements, ataxia, and falls. Despite the considerable clinical relevance of such deficits, however, no systematic pathoanatomical studies of the central somatosensory system in polyglutamine diseases are currently available. The present paper has two goals: (1) recommendation of an economical tissue sampling metho

A comprehensive understanding of the geographic distribution of the tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) complex is necessary due to increasing transboundary movement and cross-reactivity of serological tests. This review was conducted to identify the geographic distribution of the TBEV complex, including TBE virus, Alkhurma haemorrhagic fever virus, Kyasanur forest disease virus, louping-ill virus, Omsk haemorrhagic fever virus, and Powassan virus. Published reports were identified using PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane library. In addition to TBEV complex case-related studies, seroprevalence

Dermacentor reticulatus is a hard tick species with extraordinary biological features. It has a high reproduction rate, a rapid developmental cycle, and is also able to overcome years of unfavourable conditions. Dermacentor reticulatus can survive under water for several months and is cold-hardy even compared to other tick species. It has a wide host range: over 60 different wild and domesticated hosts are known for the three active developmental stages. Its high adaptiveness gives an edge to this tick species as shown by new data on the emergence and establishment of D. reticulatus population

Flaviviral diseases, including dengue fever, West Nile fever, yellow fever, tick-borne encephalitis, Omsk haemorrhagic fever, and Powassan encephalitis, threaten human health all over the world. Lack of effective antivirals targeting replication cycle of flaviviruses makes the search of such compounds a challenging task. Recently we have identified a reproduction inhibitor effective against tick-borne encephalitis virus and Powassan virus (POWV) (ACS Med. Chem. Lett., 2013, 4, 869-874). To enable using this inhibitor as a template for 3D pharmacophore search, a biologically active conformation

Omsk haemorrhagic fever is an acute viral disease prevalent in some regions of western Siberia in Russia. The symptoms of this disease include fever, headache, nausea, severe muscle pain, cough, and moderately severe haemorrhagic manifestations. A third of patients develop pneumonia, nephrosis, meningitis, or a combination of these complications. The only treatments available are for control of symptoms. No specific vaccine has been developed, although the vaccine against tick-borne encephalitis might provide a degree of protection against Omsk haemorrhagic fever virus. The virus is transmitte

Haemorrhagic disease, encephalitis, biphasic fever, flaccid paralysis, and jaundice are typical manifestations of diseases in human beings after infections by mosquito-borne or tick-borne flaviviruses such as yellow fever, dengue, West Nile, St Louis encephalitis, Japanese encephalitis, tick-borne encephalitis, Kyasanur Forest disease, and Omsk haemorrhagic fever. Although the characteristics of these viruses are well defined, they are still unpredictable with increases in disease severity, unusual clinical manifestations, unexpected methods of transmission, long-term persistence, and the disc

Haemorrhagic fever viruses (HFVs) are a diverse group of viruses that cause a clinical disease associated with fever and bleeding disorder. HFVs that are associated with a potential biological threat are Ebola and Marburg viruses (Filoviridae), Lassa fever and New World arenaviruses (Machupo, Junin, Guanarito and Sabia viruses) (Arenaviridae), Rift Valley fever (Bunyaviridae) and yellow fever, Omsk haemorrhagic fever, and Kyanasur Forest disease (Flaviviridae). In terms of biological warfare concerning dengue, Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever and Hantaviruses, there is not sufficient knowledge

In 1964, D. H. Clarke defined two antigenic subtypes of Omsk haemorrhagic fever virus (OHFV) based on polyclonal antibody absorption and haemagglutination assays. The current report defines the molecular basis for these antigenic subtypes by comparison of the complete genomes of OHFV strains Kubrin (subtype I) and Bogoluvovska (subtype II). There were six nucleotide differences between these two strains throughout the entire genome and they encoded four amino acid changes including three in the viral envelope (E) protein. Two of these changes were in solvent-exposed regions of domain 3 of the

Several human diseases in Europe are caused by viruses transmitted by tick bite. These viruses belong to the genus Flavivirus, and include tick-borne encephalitis virus, Omsk haemorrhagic fever virus, louping ill virus, Powassan virus, Nairovirus (Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus) and Coltivirus (Eyach virus). All of these viruses cause more or less severe neurological diseases, and some are also responsible for haemorrhagic fever. The epidemiology, clinical picture and methods for diagnosis are detailed in this review. Most of these viral pathogens are classified as Biosafety Level 3 or

Flaviviruses are among the most important emerging viruses known to man. Most are arboviruses (arthropod-borne) being transmitted by mosquitoes or ticks. They derived from a common ancestor 10-20000 years ago and are evolving rapidly to fill new ecological niches. Many are spreading to new geographical areas and causing increased numbers of infections. Traditionally, three clinical syndromes are recognized: fever-arthralgia-rash, viral haemorrhagic fever, and neurological disease, though for some flaviviruses the disease pattern is changing. Dengue, the most important flavivirus, is transmitte

The gene encoding the envelope glycoprotein of Omsk haemorrhagic fever (OHF) virus was cloned and sequenced. A freeze-dried preparation of infected suckling mouse brain suspension was used as the source material for viral RNA. The derived cDNA was amplified using the polymerase chain reaction and the cloned DNA sequenced by dideoxynucleotide sequencing. Alignment of the OHF virus sequence with those of other known tick-borne flaviviruses showed that they shared N-glycosylation sites, cysteine residues, the fusion peptide and a hexapeptide (EHLPTA) that identifies tick-borne flaviviruses. Solid-phase enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA) was used for the detection of antigenic relationships and/or differences among the viruses belonging to the tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) complex. Monoclonal antibodies of IgM class with haemagglutination-inhibiting activity to the Skalica strain of TBE virus were used to compare the TBE complex viruses. Antigenic analysis of 9 viruses of the TBE complex, isolated from Eurasia and America showed close relationships among them. Nevertheless, it was possible to differentiate the Skalica strain from Langat, louping-ill and Omsk haemorrhagic fever (OHF

Highly type-specific soluble antigens (SA) of viruses of the tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) complex were obtained by treatment of the sucrose-acetone antigens with 8 mol/l urea. Each SA reacted with the homologous serum only. The serum to SA of strain Sofyin and of Omsk haemorrhagic fever virus distinguished the TBE complex representatives; the difference between homologous serum titres was in the range of 4-5 two-fold dilution steps.

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) monoclonal antibodies showed haemagglutination-inhibiting (HI) activity against viruses belonging to the TBE complex except of Powassan virus. The HI titre with Kyasanur forest disease virus was lower than with tick-borne encephalitis virus, when monoclonal antibodies were incubated with the antigen at +4 degrees C for 30 min. Langat virus could be distinguished from other viruses of the TBE complex when the antigen was incubated with monoclonal antibodies at +4 degrees C for 18 hr. A close antigenic relationship was demonstrated between tick-borne encephalitis, l

This paper is a report on further studies of the antigenic relationships among viruses of the Group B tick-borne complex, carried out by the haemagglutination-inhibition (HI), complement-fixation, absorption-HI and diffusion-in-gel techniques. Earlier work has been extended to include Powassan and Negishi viruses.Comparisons of a number of strains of tick-borne viruses have revealed inter-strain variation only in the case of Omsk haemorrhagic fever virus, where two subtypes are distinguishable. This recognition of subtypes of Omsk virus has led the author to review the concept that Central Euro

More than 150 arthropod-borne viruses are now recognized, and over 50 of these are known to produce human infections and disease. Among these viruses are those of the tick-borne Russian spring-summer complex, which is etiologically involved in a wide variety of human diseases of varying severity. The eight antigenically different members of this complex so far known are Russian spring-summer encephalitis, louping-ill, Central European encephalitis, Omsk haemorrhagic fever, Kyasanur Forest disease, Langat, Negishi and Powassan viruses. In his review of the problems posed by these viruses and of
