Objective: Splenic ectopic pregnancy is an exceptionally rare and life-threatening form of abdominal ectopic pregnancy, often presenting significant diagnostic and management challenges. We report a case of ruptured splenic ectopic pregnancy initially suspected to be a tubal miscarriage. Case Report: A 36-year-old woman presented with mild left-sided pelvic pain, no vaginal bleeding and a positive pregnancy test. This was an unplanned pregnancy, and she was not sure of her LMP. This presentation in early pregnancy requires ruling out an ectopic pregnancy through clinical assessment and laborat

We report a rare case of ruptured interstitial heterotopic pregnancy in a woman in her early 40s, conceived via in vitro fertilisation. The pregnancy was initially misdiagnosed as a dichorionic diamniotic intrauterine twin gestation. At 11 weeks 5 days of gestation, she presented with abdominal pain. Ultrasonography revealed a viable intrauterine fetus and a second gestational sac in the left interstitial region, with moderate haemoperitoneum. Emergency laparoscopy confirmed rupture of the interstitial ectopic with 1500 mL of haemoperitoneum. The ectopic sac was excised, and the uterine defect

Chronic ectopic pregnancy (CEP) is an under-recognised variant of ectopic pregnancy, characterised by low or absent serum beta human chorionic gonadotropin (β-hCG), a complex adnexal mass, and non-specific clinical symptoms and signs. We present a case of a woman in her 30s with progressive lower abdominal pain, an equivocal pregnancy test, and spontaneous vaginal bleeding. Transvaginal ultrasound demonstrated an inhomogeneous, avascular right adnexal mass on ultrasound, with associated haemoperitoneum. A diagnostic laparoscopy revealed a haemorrhagic ampullary mass and 300 mL of intraperitone

INTRODUCTION: Advanced endometriosis (stage III-IV, per the revised American Society for Reproductive Medicine (rARSM) classification of endometriosis) is associated with a range of pregnancy-related complications. Despite growing evidence, awareness of these risks remains limited among healthcare providers. Furthermore, the impact of endometriosis surgery prior to conception on pregnancy outcomes remains uncertain. The primary objective of this narrative review is to evaluate whether pre-conception surgery for advanced endometriosis influences early pregnancy, obstetric and neonatal outcomes.

This case report underscores the importance of considering corpus luteum rupture as a potential diagnosis in women presenting with acute abdomen. It describes a case of intraperitoneal bleeding resulting from corpus luteum rupture that occurred after sexual intercourse. A woman in her 20s developed sudden, severe abdominal pain during intercourse and exhibited unstable haemodynamics on arrival. Although point-of-care ultrasound and CT scans identified significant haemoperitoneum, definitive confirmation of a bleeding ruptured corpus luteum cyst was made through laparoscopy. The patient receive

We present the case of a 47-year-old man undergoing an elective laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair complicated by intra-operative asystole following pneumoperitoneum and a subsequent delayed intra-abdominal haemorrhage. Notably, he exhibited profound paradoxical bradycardia and hypotension in the context of significant haemorrhage, diverging from the expected tachycardic response. Management required prompt resuscitation, urgent re-exploration and intensive care support. Paradoxical bradycardia presents a diagnostic challenge, as limited awareness among clinicians may confer false reassurance

Bicycle handlebar injuries are one of the most common mechanisms of major paediatric abdominal trauma, with the spleen being one of the most frequently affected solid organs. Grade 5 lesions represent the most severe and comparatively uncommon subtype. Despite the severity of these injuries, children often present with deceptively minimal abdominal signs and stable vital signs due to robust physiological compensatory mechanisms, making early diagnosis challenging. We describe a 13-year-old boy who sustained a grade 5 splenic injury following a bicycle handlebar impact. He presented as haemodyn

INTRODUCTION: Respiratory complications are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in people with spinal cord injuries (SCI). Respiratory muscle weakness and altered mechanics occur in patients with cervical SCI, resulting in impaired airway clearance and low lung volumes. Respiratory physiotherapy includes cough augmentation techniques, such as manual assisted cough and/or mechanical insufflation-exsufflation (MI-E) to address these problems. Additionally, this population is at risk of pulmonary embolism, often receiving therapeutic anticoagulation.

INTRODUCTION: Hepatic artery aneurysm (HAA) is a rare condition, comprising only 0.1% of all arterial aneurysms, yet it is the most common visceral pseudoaneurysm with a 20% prevalence among such cases. Mycotic HAA in the context of infective endocarditis is uncommon and results from microbial invasion and arterial wall damage.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 73-year-old woman with coronary artery disease, atrial fibrillation, repaired mitral valve prolapse and on warfarin presented with sudden left lower quadrant abdominal pain. She was hypotensive (BP 60/45 mmHg) and exhibited periumbilical tenderness.

BACKGROUND: Splenic rupture is relatively uncommon in newborns but could occur from birth trauma, increase intra-abdominal pressure such as polyhydramnios and fetal ascites. Abdominal ultrasonography remains the radiologic investigation of choice in this clime. We present this rare finding, first in the literature from sub-Saharan Africa, to raise awareness, and improve our index of suspicion of this extremely fatal condition.
CASE SUMMARY: A 2-day old male who was delivered via elective caesarian section at 39 weeks gestational age. He cried well at birth but was noticed to have a distended

OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the pathology of two stillborn lion cubs presented to the Laboratory of Pathology by analysing their necropsy findings and concluding with possible diagnoses.
METHODS: At first, a systematic necropsy was performed, and then, the samples of various tissues were collected and divided into three parts for bacterial culture, histopathology studies and molecular analysis. The conventional polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was conducted to detect common foetal infectious agents associated with stillbirth in carnivores, such as canine adenovirus-2, canine distemper v

The Extended Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma (eFAST) plays a crucial role in the emergency department (ED) by providing rapid and non-invasive diagnostic information in trauma patients. It is a diagnostic-free fluid detection technique that uses sonography to assess trauma in different anatomical windows of the chest and abdomen and has been accepted in multiple studies as the initial diagnostic tool for torso injuries in blunt abdominal trauma. By promptly identifying potentially life-threatening injuries, such as haemoperitoneum, haemothorax, and cardiac tamponade, eFAST facili

A male patient in his late teens initially presented with severe left upper abdominal pain, following a week of influenza-like symptoms. Initially, he presented to his GP, who diagnosed him with bacterial tonsillitis and treated him with clarithromycin. His clinical condition deteriorated further with severe vomiting and abdominal pain. Clinical assessment in accident and emergency revealed tachycardia, splenomegaly, lymphadenopathy and metabolic acidosis. Investigations confirmed Epstein-Barr virus infection, splenic rupture and haemoperitoneum, requiring an emergency splenectomy. He received

Ectopic pregnancy is a one of the primary causes of maternal mortality in first trimester. The most common site of ectopic pregnancy is the fallopian tube. Surgical management of tubal ectopic pregnancy includes salpingotomy or salpingectomy. Persistent ectopic pregnancy can happen after salpingotomy due to incomplete removal of ectopic tissue. However, it is very rare after salpingectomy. In our case, the patient had right-sided salpingectomy and histology confirmed right-sided tubal ectopic pregnancy. She presented 19 days' later with abdominal pain, haemoperitoneum and persistent high beta-

An adolescent female presented with an acute abdomen and elevated beta-human chorionic gonadotropin levels and underwent a laparoscopy for a suspected ruptured ectopic pregnancy. Intraoperatively, a ruptured haemorrhagic corpus luteal cyst and tissues suggestive of products of conception were noted in the same ovary. Histology confirmed an ovarian ectopic pregnancy. Haemorrhagic ovarian cysts, and ectopic pregnancies, can cause acute pelvic pain in women of childbearing age. Their similar clinical signs and symptoms pose a diagnostic dilemma for any gynaecologist. Ruptured corpus luteal cysts,

This is a case of a spontaneous haemoperitoneum occurring in the second trimester of pregnancy which was managed with interventional radiology to avoid laparotomy and its potential consequences. We aim to raise awareness of this condition in pregnancy because the perinatal mortality rate is as high as 36%. Spontaneous haemoperitoneum in pregnancy (SHiP) has frequently been associated with vascular rupture from pre-existing endometriosis. Most cases of SHiP have been managed with laparotomy. However, transcatheter embolisation can impart lifesaving alternatives to more invasive interventions wh

Mesenteric aneurysms and their complications can be a life-threatening presentation of acute abdomen to the emergency department. The majority of mesenteric artery aneurysms are incidentally detected on imaging investigations and are asymptomatic. Symptomatic mesenteric aneurysms manifest as hemoperitoneum or abdominal pain. In addition, treatment of symptomatic aneurysms is delayed due to the infrequent consideration of the diagnosis in patients presenting with abdominal pain. Timely and accurate diagnosis is of paramount importance as any delay in definitive surgical management can lead to i

Isolated splenic peliosis is an extremely rare condition characterized by the presence of multiple blood-filled cavities, occasionally resulting in non-traumatic splenic rupture with fatal bleeding. In our case, a 64-year-old man was brought by ambulance due to weakness and abdominal pain without nausea or febrility. On clinical examination, the patient was sensitive to palpation with significant tenderness over the abdomen but no associated features of peritonitis. He collapsed during the imaging examination and became unconscious and asystolic. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was not successfu

Spontaneous haemoperitoneum in pregnancy (SHiP) related to endometriosis is a rare and life-threatening complication. We report a case of a patient presenting to our department with major haemoperitoneum at 23+3 weeks of gestation due to a large rectovaginal endometriotic nodule. The patient required a midline laparotomy to evacuate 1 L of haemoperitoneum and achieve haemostasis. A large rectovaginal nodule was seen bleeding and was packed with haemostatic material and a large swab. After 24 hours, the swab was removed and haemostasis was confirmed. The patient was monitored very closely by a

INTRODUCTION: Acute intoxication rarely produces conditions that require urgent surgical care.
CASE SUMMARY: A 45-year-old man presented to the emergency department with severe abdominal pain after the deliberate ingestion of 200 cm3 of polyurethane mixed with methylene diphenyl diisocyanate and urethane primers. On an initial laparoscopic examination, foreign material was observed in the peritoneal space with haemoperitoneum. Emergency exploration was then undertaken for suspected gastric perforation. Full-thickness damage was identified on the stomach wall during the operation. The material
