A case of hepatic arteriovenous malformation is described in a calf that presented with a marked increase in abdominal volume and died 12 h after birth. At necropsy, the calf had marked abdominal distension and haemoperitoneum. The left hepatic lobe was reduced in size and covered by slightly whitish and intensely vascularized membranous tissue. At the edge of the left lobe there were cystic structures filled with translucent fluid. On cut surface, there were multiple cavitations well delimited by whitish walls and multiple dilated blood vessels that communicated with the cavitations. Histopat

Uterine leiomyomas, or fibroids, are the most common benign tumours of the female genital tract. Although uterine fibroids are commonly associated with menorrhagia, dysmenorrhea, symptomatic anaemia, urinary or bowel symptoms and infertility, intra-abdominal haemorrhage is an exceedingly rare complication. Often, the diagnosis is poorly recognizable based on the patient's clinical presentation and alternative diagnoses such as ruptured ectopic pregnancy, ruptured ovarian cyst or perforated viscus are frequently considered. Herein, we describe a case of a 50-year-old perimenopausal woman who pr

This article presents the case of a 58-year-old woman who presented feeling unwell with pain in the right upper abdomen for three days. She had a history of splenic infarcts, was on lifelong warfarin and had recently returned from a trip to Gambia. She was admitted to the hospital under suspicion of sepsis of unknown origin, and a CT scan later revealed haemoperitoneum along with a pseudoaneurysm of the right colic artery. After initially responding to resuscitation, the patient deteriorated haemodynamically, and a decision was made to perform a laparotomy, revealing a ruptured right colic art

Idiopathic spontaneous intraperitoneal haemorrhage (ISIH) is a rare cause of acute abdominal pain. It refers to haemoperitoneum resulting from the rupture of an intra-abdominal vessel without the preceding trauma or underlying pathology. Here, we present the case of a 17-year-old boy with acute abdominal pain. Initially, acute appendicitis was the primary differential diagnosis. Imaging demonstrated a significant volume of intra-abdominal fluid that was haemorrhagic in nature, but no active bleeding or source was identified. A conservative management approach was adopted due to the patient's c

Ectopic pregnancy accounts for 1-2% of all pregnancies. Ultrasound is the primary diagnostic tool to locate pregnancy outside the uterus and identify complications such as haemoperitoneum. In inconclusive cases, MRI is an adjunctive imaging modality offering more precise tissue differentiation and helpful to location identification. Presented is an unusual case of tubal pregnancy. The patient in her 30s, who was 14 weeks into her first pregnancy, had a suspected abdominal pregnancy. Both transabdominal ultrasound and an MRI indicated an ectopic pregnancy, likely originating from the right fall

Transvaginal ultrasound-guided oocyte retrieval is the gold-standard technique for oocyte retrieval that has few associated procedural and post-procedural complications. Rarely, severe complications can occur including haemoperitoneum, for which the incidence reported in the literature is approximately 0.08-0.22%. In this report, we present the case of a nulliparous woman in her late 30s who presented to the hospital with severe abdominal pain following transvaginal ultrasound-guided oocyte retrieval and was found to have extensive haemoperitoneum attributed to ovarian rupture.

Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are vascular anomalies composed of a tangle of abnormal vessels in which one or more feeding arteries are directly connected to one or more draining veins via a nidus with no intervening capillary bed. The adnexa are particularly rare sites for the formation of such malformations. Here, we present the case of a middle-aged woman who presented with spontaneous massive haemoperitoneum occurring as a result of a ruptured adnexal AVM. The diagnosis was suspected on transabdominal sonography and confirmed on CT angiography. The patient was shifted to the intervent

Background The spleen is one of the most common solid organs injured in blunt abdominal trauma with significant mortality. The management of splenic injury has significantly changed over the last few decades, ranging from certain splenectomies to non-operative management (NOM). Although several retrospective studies have been published on the NOM of minor spleen injuries, few studies have analyzed the results of NOM for high-grade splenic injuries. The pertinent question that we attempt to answer is, "Is it possible to manage extensive splenic injuries non-operatively?". Objectives To study th

Uterine rupture is a rare obstetric emergency that is typically associated with the presence of scar tissue such as in the case of previous caesarean section. In this case report, a primigravid patient presented to the hospital in cardiac arrest with massive haemoperitoneum secondary to a posterior uterine rupture. The histological specimen was found to have diffuse adenomyosis at the site of rupture. On review of the literature, there is insufficient evidence to suggest we as clinicians should alter the antenatal care for patients with known adenomyosis; however, this case highlights how we s

BACKGROUND: Cavernous haemangiomas are benign vascular tumours that are known to occasionally involve the female genital tract, including the uterus. They are often underdiagnosed during pregnancy, although they can also lead to severe postpartum or antepartum haemorrhage.
OBJECTIVES: Describe our case of an uncommon second-trimester pregnancy loss in a woman with a diffuse cavernous haemangioma of the uterus and cervix and review the wider literature.
METHODS: The review was conducted using MEDLINE, Scopus and PubMed electronic databases from beginning of the database to May 2023, using the

The incidence of bile leaks following blunt liver trauma ranges from 0.5% to 21%. Bile leaks could give rise to biliopleural fistula, which can end up causing cholethorax, where a bilious effusion is seen in the pleural cavity. Early recognition of this condition is essential for favorable outcome. We report an unusual case of delayed biliopleural fistula causing cholethorax in a 30-year-old male, presented following blunt abdominal trauma following a motor vehicle collision. Abdominal examination revealed tender right upper quadrant. He was haemodynamically stable following initial resuscitat

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Idiopathic spontaneous intraperitoneal haemorrhage is a rare and life-threatening condition that results from non-traumatic visceral artery rupture in the latter half of pregnancy and within the postpartum period [1-3].
CASE PRESENTATION: A 32 -year-old woman presented to emergency department, 14 weeks post-partum, with sharp left sided abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. Initial computed tomography (CT) was suggestive of non-specific colitis from transverse to descending colon of unclear cause. Six hours into admission she became haemodynamically unstable with

The abdominal seatbelt sign is well described in the literature as an indicative of intra-abdominal visceral injuries; it is considered rare because it is difficult to detect with no single observation providing reliable diagnosis. Consequently, it often presages a delayed diagnosis. We here report lessons from management of 44 year-old man professional driver, victim of a road traffic accident who underwent a damage control laparotomy and whose abdominal seatbelt sign was diagnosed late. To our knowledge, abdominal seatbelt sign has never been reported in a context of rural hospital with low

BACKGROUND: While the role of Extended Focused Assessment with Sonography in Trauma (eFAST) is well defined in the management of severe blunt trauma, its performance in injuries caused by stab wounds has been poorly assessed.
METHODS: Prospective single centre study which included all patients with stab wounds to the thorax or abdomen between December 2016 and December 2018. All patients underwent initial investigation with both eFAST and CT scan, except in cases of haemodynamic or respiratory instability, and in cases with a positive diagnosis by eFAST in which case surgery without CT scan w

Dengue fever is one of the most frequent arboviral diseases in the world. Dengue is known to cause myocarditis, hepatitis, and neurological illustrations but one of the established presentations is leakage of plasma resulting in circulatory failure. Spontaneous rupture of the spleen is one of the most infrequent but known outcome of dengue fever which has been reported from time to time in literature. We present, here, the case of a 50-year-old patient who developed this condition during dengue fever and was managed in our department successfully. This complication must be kept in mind while t

Pericardiocentesis is a generally safe procedure that provides effective resolution of cardiac tamponade. Emergency pericardiocentesis may be a life-saving intervention. Encountering an intra-abdominal organ in the path of the needle is predicted to be a potential complication in emergency subxiphoid approaches. Despite predictions of intraabdominal injuries, only few instances are recorded. In this case study, a patient recovering from percutaneous cardiac intervention required an emergency pericardiocentesis that was complicated by a liver injury, diaphragmatic penetration and pneumo-haemope

BACKGROUND: Delayed Haemorrhage (DH) is a potential complication following liver trauma. Hepatic artery pseudoaneurysms (HAPAs) are also a frequently considered delayed complication of liver trauma, yet their incidence is rare. Furthermore, little is known about their natural history, with some observed to resolve spontaneously. Some authors postulate that DH following liver trauma may in fact originate from HAPAs.
AIM: To investigate the incidence of DH and HAPA following liver trauma, review subsequent management and explore a possible association between the two.
METHODS: A retrospective

COVID-19 represents a global health emergency, causing significant morbidity and mortality. Multiple vaccines have been distributed worldwide to control the spread of this pandemic. Several reports of thrombosis and thrombocytopaenia have been described after vaccination. These have been termed vaccine-induced immune thrombocytopaenia and thrombosis (VITT). We report a fatal case of VITT after receiving the first dose of Ad26.COV2.S vaccine. A man in his 30s developed thrombocytopaenia, massive haemoperitoneum due to spleen rupture and extensive portal and femoral vein thrombosis. The patient
