BACKGROUND: With the increasing trend of vaginal birth after caesarean delivery (VBAC), evaluation of the feasibility and safety of a second VBAC with grand multiparity is worth considering. Intrapartum uterine rupture is diagnosed in approximately one-fifth of all VBAC cases following successful vaginal delivery. To our knowledge, no report is available on the application of laparoscopy to repair postpartum uterine rupture after a successful second VBAC in China.
CASE SUMMARY: A 31-year-old woman (gravida 5, para 2) at 39 wk and 5 d of gestation was admitted to the hospital in labour. After

BACKGROUND: Covid-19 is a novel disease caused by the severe acute respiratory coronavirus (SARS-CoV2). We discuss a gentleman who presented with an atraumatic rupture of the spleen secondary to this infection.
BRIEF SUMMARY OF PRESENTATION: A 57-year-old service engineer was brought into the emergency department after having collapsed at home. RT-PCR was positive for covid-19 infection. CT scan showed evidence of haemoperitoneum and splenic rupture. He underwent splenic artery embolisation and required ventilatory and circulatory support on ITU. He made a full recovery and was discharged hom

Haemoperitoneum was observed in a peritoneal dialysis (PD) patient after undergoing endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration (EUS-FNA). EUS-FNA was performed to evaluate a pancreatic cyst seen on a prekidney transplant evaluation abdominal CT scan. Haemoperitoneum cleared with a PD exchange. In this case report, we discuss aetiologies for bleeding risks in patients with chronic kidney disease and focus on haemoperitoneum in patients receiving PD. We will also explore treatment options to minimise bleeding associated with an abdominal procedure such as EUS-FNA.

We report a patient who sustained catastrophic pulmonary fat embolism post-induction of general anesthesia during laparotomy for haemoperitoneum. The source being the fractured shaft of fracture femur which was missed during the primary survey in the chaos of a positive focused assessment with sonography for trauma and a transient responding patient. In this case report, we want to emphasize the importance of primary survey in a trauma patient, effective communication and documentation to prevent errors and for better management of patients.

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) diversion for hydrocephalus via ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunting is one of the most commonly performed neurosurgical procedures. Unfortunately, VP shunting also carries a high complication rate. While long-term complications of VP shunting are generally well-described, the literature on more acute, iatrogenic injury during shunt placement is essentially limited to easily identifiable intracranial bleeds. Herein is presented the first reported case of iatrogenic abdominal wall vessel injury as a consequence of blind distal VP shunt catheter placement causing a critic

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF-1) or von Recklinghausen's disease is a genetic, progressive, multi-system disease that predominantly affects the skin and nervous system. Vascular involvement is rare, but can have catastrophic results. Pregnant patients with this disease need careful, multidisciplinary follow up in order to control possible vascular alterations, which usually affect the kidneys. We present the case of a patient diagnosed with NF-1 who debuted with massive spontaneous hemoperitoneum in the late postoperative period of an elective Cesarean section. Spontaneous bleeding from large v

INTRODUCTION: We described unusual presentation of primary myelofibrosis with spontaneous bleeding after laparoscopic adrenalectomy. This case is written following the SCARE criteria.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 73 years old Caucasian man underwent laparoscopic right adrenalectomy for a rapidly increasing expansive mass (3.5 × 2.5 cm) of the right adrenal gland. The night of intervention, patient underwent urgent explorative laparotomy, that highlighted massive haemoperitoneum, clots in the abdomen, on the splenic side, on Morrison's space, and at the confluence between right renal vein and infer

Corpus luteum rupture presenting as acute abdomen is an underdiagnosed condition. Though a self-limiting entity, its differentiation from other causes is essential to prevent unnecessary surgical procedures. The radiologist should be aware of the possibility of a ruptured haemorrhagic ovarian cyst in a female of reproductive age group presenting with pelvic pain and a large amount of haemorrhagic ascites. Imaging characteristically reveals a thick-walled cystic structure in the adnexa with internal echoes, focal discontinuity or irregularity of its wall with haemoperitoneum. While sonography i

OBJECTIVE: To assess the value of multiple serum biomarkers for the prediction of successful outcome of expectant management in women with tubal ectopic pregnancy (TEP).
STUDY DESIGN: Women with a conclusive ultrasound diagnosis of TEP had a blood test to measure β-human chorionic gonadotropin (β-hCG), progesterone, inhibin A, activin A and high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) at the initial visit. Women presenting with pain, serum β-hCG ≥ 1500 IU, evidence of a live ectopic pregnancy or a significant haemoperitoneum were advised to have emergency surgery. Women eligible for expectant

Heterotopic pregnancy (HP) is a rare, potentially life-threatening complication of an intrauterine pregnancy with a simultaneous ectopic pregnancy. There is a higher incidence with assisted reproduction techniques (ART) and radiology can be pivotal in its diagnosis. A 28-year-old woman underwent ART and at 7 weeks' gestation presented with acute right iliac fossa pain. Transvaginal ultrasound (US) imaging confirmed a viable intrauterine pregnancy. The patients' pain persisted however, and transabdominal US demonstrated a complex, heterogeneous right adnexal mass. Subsequent magnetic resonance

A 27-year-old man presented with acute right upper quadrant abdominal pain and vomiting. He was clinically in hypovolaemic shock. Investigations revealed normocytic anaemia with a normal bilirubin and moderate liver function test abnormalities. CT abdomen and pelvis demonstrated haemoperitoneum and a large solitary hepatic mass in segments V and VI, suspicious for a ruptured hepatic tumour. Massive transfusion protocol was commenced and angioembolisation of the inferior branch of the right hepatic artery was undertaken. Despite this, his haemorrhagic shock was resistant to resuscitation. Thus,

BACKGROUND: It is uncommon to find ampullary tubal pregnancy in the second trimester.
METHODS: A 35-year-old G4P3 at 16 gestational weeks presented with a day history of sudden severe lower abdominal pain and no vaginal bleeding. The patient had a normal pulse of 82/minutes, haemoglobin concentration of 6.3 g/dl and ultrasonography showed an empty uterus with an alive fetus in the right adnexa. She was provisionally diagnosed to have an abdominal pregnancy.
RESULTS: The patient had an emergency laparotomy where 2.2 L of haemoperitoneum and a slow-leaking right ampullary tubal pregnancy were

UNLABELLED: Spontaneous rupture of a liver metastasis is a life-threatening complication of metastatic liver disease. Although metastatic liver lesions are much more common than primary tumours, spontaneous rupture of a liver metastasis is rare. Therapeutic decisions must take into account the extent of metastatic liver disease and the patient's performance status. Transarterial embolization may be considered in cases of ongoing haemorrhage despite initial conservative measures. We describe a case of haemoperitoneum due to spontaneous rupture of a liver metastasis in a 72-year-old patient with

The inferior vena cava is the most commonly injured abdominal vessel and accounts for about 25% of abdominal vascular injuries. Despite improved preoperative care and operative techniques, the mortality rates for the inferior vena cava injuries are still high due to delayed presentation, inadequate or delayed fluid resuscitation, difficulty of diagnosis and technical problems in repair. A case of the inferior vena cava injury encountered after abdominal stab injury with about 4cm vertical tear of infrarenal vena cava, survived due to immediate transportation, appropriate and successful periope

INTRODUCTION: Emergency ultrasound methods such as Focused Assessment with Sonography in Trauma (FAST) are a widely used imaging method. This examination can be performed to examine the presence of several life-threatening injuries. Early diagnosis may lead to better outcome, but the effect of timely diagnosis in the prehospital setting is not yet clear. Therefore, the aim is to determine the diagnostic accuracy and the effect of prehospital ultrasound performed in (poly)trauma patients.
METHODS: A literature search was performed in PubMed, Embase and Cochrane's Library. Articles were include

Simple hepatic cysts are usually asymptomatic but can rarely result in life-threatening complications such as haemoperitoneum secondary to rupture. A 70-year-old woman with known simple hepatic cyst presented with acute chest pain and dyspnoea. The initial diagnosis was pulmonary embolism, and anticoagulation was commenced. However, she subsequently collapsed with haemodynamic instability. CT revealed a large hepatic cyst haematoma with rupture into the peritoneal cavity. The patient underwent emergency laparotomy, haemostasis and partial deroofing of the cyst. Retrospective review of CT scans

An 18-year-old male patient presented to our regional referral hospital postcollapse at home. This was about 48 hours following a 2 m fall from a mountain bike. CT scan at presentation showed a grade 3/4 laceration at the splenic lower pole with some haemoperitoneum. He was managed conservatively. However, on day 4 he developed increasing abdominal pain which prompted repeat CT abdominal angiography. This scan did not show any further active bleeding from the spleen, however, a coeliac artery dissection was discovered, which was not evident on the first scan. After liaison with the vascular su
